Black Clover Season 2 Total Episode Count: Split Cours & Spade Kingdom Arc Projections
Black Clover Season 2 is finally on the horizon, and honestly, it still feels a little surreal to write that sentence. After more than five years without a proper continuation of the TV anime, Asta, Yuno, Noelle, and the rest of the Magic Knights are preparing to return in October 2026.
The original anime ended back in March 2021 after 170 episodes. At the time, the decision made sense. The anime had been moving dangerously close to the manga, and continuing with the same weekly schedule would have created the exact problems long-running shonen anime are now trying to avoid: filler, recap episodes, inconsistent production quality, and eventually catching up to the source material.
But the situation is completely different now.
The manga has moved far beyond the point where the original anime stopped, and the story is packed with some of the biggest battles and emotional moments in the entire series. The real question is no longer whether Black Clover Season 2 will have enough material.
The question is how many episodes the new season will actually need.
How Much Manga Could Black Clover Season 2 Adapt?
The previous anime run finished around the beginning of the Spade Kingdom storyline, with Asta completing his Devil-Binding Ritual with Liebe and the story beginning to reveal more about Nacht Faust.
From there, the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc becomes the obvious centerpiece of the new season.
The arc covers approximately 61 manga chapters, from around Chapter 270 to Chapter 331. That is a substantial amount of material, but it is also unusually well suited for an anime adaptation. Unlike slower story arcs filled with long conversations and exposition, the Spade Kingdom Raid is almost constantly moving.
You have:
- Major battles involving the Dark Triad.
- Multiple characters fighting simultaneously.
- New transformations and power-ups.
- The invasion of the Spade Kingdom.
- The conflict surrounding Megicula.
- Noelle’s emotional battle involving Acier.
- Asta’s continued development with Liebe.
- The massive confrontation involving Lucifero.
Personally, I think this is exactly the kind of material that benefits from a seasonal production schedule. There is enough action to keep the story moving quickly, but there are also enough important character moments that rushing through everything would be a huge mistake.
The 13-Episode Theory Doesn’t Really Make Sense
One of the biggest concerns surrounding the rumored Black Clover Season 2 episode count has been the possibility of a 13-episode first season.
At first glance, 13 episodes might sound perfectly normal for a modern anime. The problem is the amount of manga material that would need to be adapted.

That is technically possible in some battle-heavy sections, but I really don’t think it would be the right choice for Black Clover.
The Spade Kingdom storyline isn’t just a collection of flashy fights. The emotional buildup matters. Noelle’s storyline matters. Magna’s fight matters. Asta and Liebe’s relationship matters. The development of the Black Bulls matters.
If the anime tried to sprint through everything, some of these moments would lose the impact they had in the manga.
And let’s be honest: after waiting more than five years for the anime to return, fans probably don’t want a rushed adaptation.
The Most Likely Scenario: A 24 or 25-Episode Split Cour
The most logical structure, in my opinion, is a 24 or 25-episode split-cour season.
A possible layout could look like this:
Cour 1 — Fall 2026
11–13 episodes
This part could focus on the opening stages of the Spade Kingdom Raid and gradually build toward the Megicula storyline.
Cour 2 — 2027
12–13 episodes
The second cour could then cover the remaining battles, the escalating devil conflict, and the conclusion of the arc around Chapter 331.
This format would give the production team something the original Black Clover anime often desperately lacked: time.
The old weekly schedule created an enormous amount of pressure. Episodes had to be produced constantly, and that inevitably led to uneven animation quality. Some episodes looked fantastic, while others relied heavily on still frames, limited movement, or outsourced production.
A seasonal Black Clover sequel has the opportunity to be something completely different.
The success of modern seasonal shonen anime has shown that audiences are willing to wait if the final product looks better. I would much rather watch 12 carefully produced episodes than 24 episodes that constantly struggle to maintain a consistent visual standard.
Where Could the First Cour End?
This is probably the most interesting part of the episode count discussion.
If the first cour contains roughly 12 episodes, the anime would need to find a major emotional or narrative stopping point. The obvious candidate is the conclusion of the Megicula conflict.
The storyline surrounding Noelle, Acier, and Megicula is one of the most emotionally important sections of the entire Spade Kingdom Raid. It also gives the anime a natural climax.
Ending the first cour somewhere around this part of the story would make a lot of sense.
You would have:
- A major villain confrontation reaching its conclusion.
- Noelle receiving one of her most important character moments.
- A major emotional payoff involving her family.
- A natural pause before the story moves into an even larger conflict.
That would be a much stronger mid-season finale than simply stopping at an arbitrary chapter number.
And personally, I think this is exactly how a split-cour season should work. The break should feel like a dramatic pause, not like the production team simply ran out of episodes.
Cour 2 Would Be the Real Spectacle
If the first half concludes around the Megicula storyline, the second cour would have an enormous amount of material to work with.
The conflict escalates dramatically, and the anime would finally reach some of the most anticipated battles in the entire series.
This is where the production quality will really matter.
The fights involving the highest-ranking devils and Lucifero are the kind of sequences that can either become legendary anime moments or feel strangely underwhelming depending on the direction, choreography, and animation schedule.
This is one reason I am actually happy that Black Clover is returning in the modern seasonal era.
Asta’s anti-magic, the devil powers, the various transformations, and the large-scale magical attacks all require proper animation. These fights should not feel like a slideshow of manga panels with effects layered on top.
If Studio Pierrot gives the team enough time, the Spade Kingdom material has the potential to look incredible.
Why a Finished Manga Changes Everything
Another major advantage of the new anime is that the source material is no longer an unfinished moving target.
During the original run, the anime had to constantly worry about catching up with the manga. That created a difficult production situation. The staff had to slow the story down, add padding, or create anime-original material.
A completed manga gives the adaptation a clear destination.
The production team knows:
- Where the story begins.
- Where each major arc ends.
- Which battles need more time.
- Which scenes can be adapted more quickly.
- Where the biggest cliffhangers should be placed.
That kind of planning is incredibly valuable.
For me, this is probably the biggest reason why I am optimistic about the return of Black Clover. The anime no longer has to desperately chase the manga every week. It can actually be planned like a complete adaptation.
Could Season 2 End With the Lucius Reveal?
A 24 or 25-episode season ending around Chapter 331 would create an absolutely brutal cliffhanger for anime-only viewers.
The revelation involving Lucius Zogratis completely changes the direction of the story and immediately opens the door for the next major phase of Asta’s journey.
From a storytelling perspective, it would be a perfect season finale.
The anime could spend an entire season building the Spade Kingdom conflict, deliver the massive battles fans have been waiting for, and then end with a reveal that makes viewers immediately ask:
“Wait… who is the real final enemy?”
That is exactly the kind of ending that makes a long wait between seasons painful but effective.

My Prediction for the Black Clover Season 2 Episode Count
If I had to make a prediction based on the amount of source material and the current direction of major shonen anime, I would expect 24 or 25 episodes in total, most likely divided into two cours.
The most realistic structure would be:
- Cour 1: Approximately 12 episodes.
- Production break: Several months.
- Cour 2: Approximately 12–13 episodes.
- Total: Around 24–25 episodes.
Could the exact number change? Absolutely. Until the official episode listing is released, any specific number should be treated as a projection rather than a confirmed fact.
But from a pacing perspective, a split-cour season makes far more sense than trying to force the entire Spade Kingdom Raid into a single 13-episode run.
After all this time, I don’t want Black Clover Season 2 to simply return quickly.
I want it to return properly.
The series has already proven that it can deliver incredible characters, dramatic rivalries, emotional payoffs, and some genuinely unforgettable battles. Now it finally has the chance to present that material with a production schedule that matches its ambition.
If Studio Pierrot chooses a 24–25 episode split-cour format, I honestly think that could be the best possible outcome for Black Clover’s return. The wait has been frustrating, but if it means getting a more consistent, better-paced, and visually stronger adaptation of the Spade Kingdom storyline, then I am willing to wait a little longer between cours.
Asta has already waited long enough for his next big battle.
Now I just want the anime to make sure that battle is worth the wait.
