What Does Subaru’s Cor Leonis Do? Re:ZERO Season 4 Part 2 Power Explained
If you’ve followed Re:ZERO since the beginning, you’ve probably noticed one thing: Subaru has never been the strongest fighter in the room. He isn’t blessed with overwhelming magic, absurd swordsmanship, or the kind of broken Authority that lets him erase entire battlefields. Instead, he’s survived through intelligence, persistence, and an almost terrifying willingness to suffer for everyone else.
That’s exactly why Cor Leonis instantly became one of my favorite abilities in the entire series.
When Season 4 Part 2 finally reveals Subaru’s new Authority, some viewers might expect another flashy offensive power after the defeat of the Archbishop of Greed. Instead, Tappei Nagatsuki gives Subaru something that perfectly reflects who he has become throughout the story. Rather than copying Regulus Corneas’ overwhelming invincibility, Subaru receives an Authority built entirely around trust, teamwork, and sacrifice.
In my opinion, that’s far more interesting than simply making him overpowered.
Subaru Finally Inherits the Greed Witch Factor
After the fall of Regulus Corneas, Subaru inherits the Witch Factor of Greed.
But here’s what makes Witch Factors so fascinating in Re:ZERO.
They aren’t copied abilities.
Instead, they adapt themselves to the person who possesses them.
Regulus embodied selfish greed. His Authority existed only to protect himself, freeze time around his own body, and preserve the world exactly the way he wanted it. Everything about his power represented isolation and obsession.
Subaru couldn’t be more different.
His greatest weakness—and greatest strength—has always been his inability to abandon the people he cares about.
Because of that, the Greed Witch Factor transforms into Cor Leonis, literally meaning “Heart of the Lion.”
Rather than making Subaru invincible, it makes everyone around him stronger.
That’s such a classic Re:ZERO twist.
Cor Leonis Isn’t About Fighting
One mistake I see people make is assuming Cor Leonis is some hidden combat skill.
It really isn’t.
Instead, think of it as an incredibly advanced support ability.
Subaru becomes the center of an invisible network connecting everyone who genuinely trusts him.
From there, he can monitor allies, understand their condition, and even manipulate the burdens they’re carrying.
It’s less like gaining a new weapon and more like becoming the commander of an entire army.
What Can Cor Leonis Actually Do?
At its core, the Authority has several major functions.
1. It Tracks Trusted Allies
Once activated, Subaru can locate allies connected to him through mutual trust.
This isn’t just a simple location marker.
He can also sense their overall condition, including:
- Physical exhaustion
- Emotional stress
- Fear
- Combat readiness
- Whether they’re safe or in immediate danger
During chaotic battles involving multiple groups, this information becomes incredibly valuable.
Instead of guessing where everyone is, Subaru always has an overview of the battlefield.
2. Subaru Can Carry Other People’s Pain
This is where Cor Leonis becomes truly incredible.
Through what’s commonly called First Shift, Subaru can absorb the fatigue and suffering affecting his allies.
Imagine Emilia has been fighting nonstop for hours.
Instead of forcing her to retreat, Subaru can transfer much of her exhaustion onto himself.
The injury itself doesn’t disappear.
Cuts still bleed.
Broken bones remain broken.
But the crippling pain and fatigue holding someone back can be dramatically reduced.
Considering everything Subaru has endured throughout the series, it’s strangely fitting that his greatest weapon is his ability to suffer even more.
3. He Can Divide That Burden
The upgraded application—often referred to by fans as Second Shift—makes Cor Leonis even smarter.
Rather than absorbing every burden himself, Subaru can spread that weight throughout his trusted network.
Instead of one person collapsing from exhaustion, multiple allies each carry only a tiny fraction.
It’s basically teamwork turned into a supernatural ability.
I’ve always loved how this reflects one of Re:ZERO’s biggest themes:

Cor Leonis vs Regulus’ Authority
The contrast between the two users says everything about their personalities.

Despite how impressive it sounds, the Authority comes with serious restrictions.
Some of its biggest limitations include:
- Mutual trust is mandatory. Subaru can’t connect to enemies or people who don’t genuinely trust him.
- It doesn’t heal injuries. Fatal wounds remain fatal.
- Subaru still has human limits. Taking on too much pain can knock him unconscious or even threaten his own life.
- The network can fail. If trust breaks during battle, the connection disappears immediately.
These weaknesses stop Cor Leonis from becoming another unstoppable anime ability.
Instead, it stays perfectly balanced while still feeling incredibly useful.

Why I Think This Is Subaru’s Best Ability
Looking back at earlier seasons, Subaru’s powers always came with enormous suffering.
Invisible Providence was difficult to control and physically damaged him every time he used it.
Return by Death remains one of the cruelest abilities in anime because every piece of knowledge has to be earned through death.
Cor Leonis feels different.
It doesn’t erase Subaru’s suffering.
Instead, it gives that suffering purpose.
After watching Subaru endure countless failures over the years, seeing him finally become the emotional center of every battle feels incredibly rewarding.
He’s still not the strongest character.
He’s still not the fastest.
He still loses in direct combat against most major enemies.
But now, every powerful ally around him performs better simply because Subaru is there.
That’s an amazing form of character progression.
Why Cor Leonis Fits Re:ZERO Perfectly
One reason Re:ZERO stands out from other isekai series is that power rarely solves everything.
Victory usually comes from understanding people.
Building trust.
Accepting weakness.
Learning from failure.
Cor Leonis represents all of those ideas at once.
Instead of becoming another lone hero who defeats every villain through raw strength, Subaru becomes someone capable of bringing out the absolute best in everyone fighting beside him.
For me, that’s infinitely more satisfying than watching another protagonist unlock an unbeatable transformation.
As Season 4 Part 2 continues adapting the Recapture Arc, Cor Leonis will likely prove that Subaru’s greatest strength was never the Witch Factors themselves—it was always the bonds he spent years building with the people willing to stand beside him.
