There are Bleach fights that are cool, and then there are Bleach fights that make you stop thinking about the plot for a few minutes and just stare at the screen. Episode 44, “The Perfect Crimson,” looks firmly planted in the second category. The latest preview points toward a ridiculous collision between Kenpachi Zaraki, Toshiro Hitsugaya, Byakuya Kuchiki, and Gerard Valkyrie, and honestly, this is exactly the kind of excessive anime spectacle that Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War was made to deliver.

What makes this episode particularly exciting is that it isn’t simply another captain-versus-Sternritter showdown. We are getting several huge character moments packed into one confrontation, including Kenpachi’s Bankai and Hitsugaya’s adult form. Throw Gerard’s absurd “The Miracle” ability into the middle of all that chaos, and you have a fight where practically every character is capable of changing the entire battlefield in seconds.

Bleach TYBW Episode 44 Is Basically a Captain Power Showcase

The preview immediately makes one thing clear: Gerard Valkyrie is still an absolute nightmare to deal with. He isn’t the kind of enemy you beat by hitting him harder once or twice. In fact, trying to overpower him can make the situation even worse because his Schrift, The Miracle, turns damage, impossible circumstances, and the hopes and despair surrounding him into even greater power.

That creates a wonderfully stupid problem for Kenpachi.

Of course, Kenpachi’s first instinct is to hit the gigantic Quincy as hard as physically possible.

And Gerard’s response is essentially, “Thanks, I’ll get bigger.”

That dynamic is one of the reasons this battle works so well for me. Kenpachi is finally fighting an opponent who matches his insane appetite for violence, except Gerard has the supernatural advantage of becoming more monstrous whenever the battle reaches another impossible level.

Gerard Valkyrie Is the Worst Possible Opponent for Kenpachi

Gerard’s Sword of Hope and The Miracle make him feel less like a normal fighter and more like a walking boss mechanic that refuses to stay defeated. Breaking his weapon doesn’t solve the problem. Hurting him doesn’t solve the problem. Even overwhelming him can create another problem.

That’s exactly why the arrival of Byakuya and Hitsugaya matters.

Instead of one captain trying to brute-force Gerard into submission, we get three completely different combat philosophies attacking the same target. Kenpachi brings raw destruction, Hitsugaya brings increasingly ridiculous ice abilities, and Byakuya provides the precision and battlefield awareness the other two desperately lack.

It’s a bizarre team, but somehow it makes perfect sense.

Kenpachi Zaraki’s Bankai Is the Moment Everyone Is Waiting For

Let’s be honest: Kenpachi’s Bankai is the real headline.

The manga readers have known about this moment for years, but seeing it animated is another matter entirely. Kenpachi finally unleashing his Bankai isn’t just a standard transformation where the character gets a new outfit and a bigger sword. It completely changes his presence.

His Bankai turns him into something closer to a living weapon than a captain.

The design is terrifyingly aggressive, with the blood-red appearance, horns, monstrous expression, and sheer physical brutality making it obvious that Kenpachi has sacrificed control for overwhelming power. There’s barely any elegance to it. That’s precisely why it works.

Kenpachi doesn’t need a sophisticated Bankai. Kenpachi needs something that looks like it escaped from a horror manga.

And that’s basically what Kubo gave him.

The interesting part is that this power comes with a major downside. Kenpachi’s body isn’t built to casually handle everything his Bankai gives him. His strength skyrockets, but his ability to control that strength becomes a serious problem.

That makes the transformation feel much more dangerous than a conventional power-up.

Adult Hitsugaya Is Another Huge TYBW Payoff

While Kenpachi gets the most violent transformation, Toshiro Hitsugaya gets one of the strangest and most satisfying upgrades in the arc.

When the final petals of Daiguren Hyorinmaru disappear, Hitsugaya’s body finally reaches its mature state. The tiny captain that fans have spent years joking about suddenly becomes an adult-looking warrior capable of accessing the full potential of his Zanpakuto.

And yes, the visual difference is hilarious.

We’ve gone from “small genius captain” to “this man looks like he should have been promoted ten years ago.”

But the joke ends quickly once Hitsugaya starts using his abilities.

His mature form allows him to push his ice far beyond simply freezing ordinary objects. At this stage, the power of Hyorinmaru becomes genuinely terrifying because Hitsugaya can interfere with the functions of things he freezes.

That makes him particularly valuable against Gerard.

If Kenpachi is the hammer and Byakuya is the scalpel, adult Hitsugaya is basically the battlefield’s emergency shutdown button.

Byakuya Is the One Keeping This Disaster From Becoming Total Chaos

Someone has to actually think during this fight.

That person is Byakuya.

Kenpachi isn’t interested in elaborate tactics when he has a giant enemy standing in front of him. Hitsugaya is focused on understanding and exploiting the limits of his ice. Byakuya, meanwhile, is capable of watching the entire battlefield and recognizing where an opening might exist.

His Senbonzakura Kageyoshi also gives the fight a completely different visual identity.

There is something incredibly satisfying about watching Byakuya’s thousands of blades swarm around Gerard while Kenpachi tears into him from another direction and Hitsugaya covers everything in ice. These characters have such different fighting styles that putting them together almost feels like watching three different Bleach eras collide.

And I absolutely love that.

Byakuya and Kenpachi have never exactly been the definition of teamwork, either. Their personalities are practically opposites. One is disciplined, aristocratic, and controlled; the other would happily solve a complicated problem by cutting it in half.

Yet when the Soul Society is staring down a monster like Gerard, those differences suddenly don’t matter.

Why Gerard’s Miracle Makes This Fight So Frustrating

The biggest danger here is that Gerard doesn’t play by normal shonen rules.

Usually, when three powerful characters gang up on one villain, you know what the structure is going to be. They land increasingly powerful attacks, the villain takes damage, then the heroes combine their strongest techniques for the finishing blow.

Gerard basically laughs at that formula.

The stronger the heroes become, the more ridiculous he can become.

That means Episode 44 has a natural tension that isn’t simply “who has the bigger attack?” The real question is whether Kenpachi, Hitsugaya, and Byakuya can figure out how to fight someone whose power keeps rewriting the conditions of the battle.

This is also why I’m especially interested in how the anime handles the pacing. The manga material covering this section is packed with major moments, and Bleach TYBW has already shown a willingness to expand fights and add material that wasn’t present on the page.

If the production team gives these transformations enough breathing room instead of rushing from one spectacle shot to another, this could easily become one of the standout episodes of the cour.

The Animation Has a Lot to Prove

The production team attached to this episode has anime fans paying attention for a reason. Action and effects animation are especially important here because the fight involves huge-scale destruction, complicated sword effects, ice manipulation, and multiple transformations.

And this isn’t the sort of episode where average animation is going to cut it.

Kenpachi’s Bankai needs weight.

Hitsugaya’s mature form needs elegance and power.

Byakuya’s attacks need precision.

Gerard needs to look absolutely enormous.

If those four elements come together, the episode could be spectacular. If the camera becomes too chaotic or the effects overwhelm the actual character animation, some of the impact could disappear.

Personally, I’m hoping the staff doesn’t overdo the particle effects. Bleach has always looked best to me when the animation lets the characters themselves carry the scene. Kenpachi standing there looking completely insane is already more effective than throwing a thousand glowing effects behind him.

Ichigo’s Battle With Yhwach Is Still Hanging Over Everything

While the captain fight is stealing the spotlight, Ichigo Kurosaki is still dealing with Yhwach.

That’s important because the episode isn’t happening in isolation. The Soul Society is fighting for survival in one location while Ichigo is facing the person responsible for the entire catastrophe somewhere else.

The contrast should be fascinating.

Below, Kenpachi, Hitsugaya, and Byakuya are throwing everything they have at a gigantic Quincy monster. Above, Ichigo is being pushed against an opponent whose powers operate on an entirely different level.

That parallel makes the episode feel like part of the final sprint rather than just another flashy battle.

And if the ending material really sets up Rukia and Renji heading toward Ichigo, the transition into Episode 45 should be extremely important.

What I’m Most Excited to See in Episode 44

If I had to rank the moments I’m watching for, it would look something like this:

• Kenpachi’s Bankai — easily the biggest moment of the episode for me.
• Adult Hitsugaya — a payoff that has been teased and joked about for years.
• The Kenpachi-Hitsugaya-Byakuya combination — an absolutely bizarre trio that somehow works.
• Gerard’s escalating transformations — because this guy apparently refuses to stay dead, defeated, or reasonably sized.
• The transition back to Ichigo and Yhwach — the episode needs to maintain the larger war’s momentum.

What I particularly appreciate is that these aren’t random upgrades thrown into the story simply because the heroes need to become stronger. Each character’s power reflects their personality. Kenpachi becomes more feral, Hitsugaya finally reaches the maturity his Bankai has been hinting at, and Byakuya remains the controlled presence holding the battlefield together.

Bleach TYBW Episode 44 Could Be One of the Arc’s Big Episodes

There is always a danger with enormous fan expectations. Once a moment becomes legendary in the manga community, people start imagining an anime adaptation that can never realistically satisfy everyone. I’ve seen that happen with plenty of shonen series.

Still, Episode 44 has the ingredients to deliver something special.

Kenpachi’s Bankai alone would be enough to sell the episode. Add adult Hitsugaya, Byakuya’s Senbonzakura, Gerard’s ridiculous Miracle ability, and the continuing crisis surrounding Ichigo and Yhwach, and suddenly this feels less like a regular episode and more like one of those installments fans will be arguing about immediately afterward.

The best part is that the three captains aren’t simply stronger versions of themselves. They’re being pushed into situations where their personalities and fighting styles collide. Kenpachi wants to destroy Gerard, Hitsugaya needs to understand how to neutralize him, and Byakuya has to make sure the whole operation doesn’t collapse.

That’s exactly the kind of messy, oversized Bleach battle I wanted from Thousand-Year Blood War.

Bleach TYBW Episode 44 has every chance to be completely ridiculous — and I mean that as a compliment. If the animation delivers on the preview’s promise, Kenpachi’s transformation and Hitsugaya’s evolution could become two of the defining anime moments of the final arc.
