If there is one thing I did not expect from MikotoHako this early in the series, it was for Chapter 3 to turn what looked like a goofy police interrogation into one of the biggest lore dumps yet. I went into “False Charges” expecting more supernatural comedy, Hako being chaotic, and Ren Mikoto doing his usual genius detective routine. Instead, the chapter quietly introduced an entire government organization, expanded Mikoto’s family history, revealed some surprisingly dark character secrets, and ended with a missing-person case that feels much more important than it first appears.

And yes, that cliffhanger involving Hako and the mysterious black handprints absolutely got my attention.

The good news is that MikotoHako Chapter 4 is scheduled for August 24, 2026, in Japan, with the English simulpub arriving in North America on August 23. If Chapter 3 is any indication, the next chapter could finally start showing us what the series’ larger supernatural mystery is actually building toward.

MikotoHako Chapter 4 Release Date and Time

MikotoHako Chapter 4 is set for a simultaneous global release through Shueisha’s MANGA Plus platform.

For readers in the United States, that means the chapter becomes available on Sunday, August 23, 2026, despite the Japanese release date falling on Monday.

Personally, I think the Sunday release will be especially nice for international readers. There’s something satisfying about getting a new supernatural manga chapter on a weekend morning and immediately having the entire fandom spend the next few hours trying to figure out what the heck just happened.

Chapter 3 Was Much More Important Than It Looked

Chapter 3, “False Charges,” might be my favorite chapter so far because it perfectly demonstrates what makes MikotoHako work.

The series can be ridiculous one moment and genuinely mysterious the next.

The interrogation scene is a perfect example. Mikoto is sitting in a police station while Hako casually eats katsudon with her feet on the table. The joke about interrogation-room food being a Japanese tradition is exactly the kind of absurd comedy I expected from the manga.

Then the story introduces Division Zero.

Suddenly, the joke has consequences.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Mourning Affairs Bureau is essentially a secret supernatural division dealing with cases that ordinary law enforcement cannot explain. Even better, the name itself contains a clever linguistic trick involving the Japanese reading “Rei,” connecting the bureau to spirits and ghosts.

That detail is important because it confirms something I had been wondering about: Hako isn’t merely a hallucination or visual gag. Government specialists can actually perceive her supernatural wooden-box form.

That changes the entire way I look at the series.

Mikoto’s Greatest Weapon Isn’t Supernatural Power

The biggest character reveal in Chapter 3 is arguably Mikoto himself.

We’ve already known that Ren is extremely intelligent, but the chapter gives us a much better understanding of why he behaves the way he does.

Mikoto comes from an extraordinarily gifted family, yet he apparently inherited none of the supernatural talent expected from him. Instead of possessing impressive spiritual abilities, he developed something arguably more dangerous: an almost ridiculous talent for collecting information and connecting seemingly unrelated details.

That’s where his infamous “Rage-Ignition Inferno Mode” becomes hilarious.

He doesn’t become stronger.

He doesn’t summon a monster.

He doesn’t unlock some hidden magical technique.

He just starts talking.

And suddenly everyone in the room wishes they had never met him.

Mikoto digs into Assistant Inspector Rino Takinuma’s secret online identity and exposes her streaming career. Then he turns his attention toward Inspector Miki Adakae and reveals information about his personal life.

Watching two trained government officials completely collapse under Mikoto’s information warfare was probably the funniest sequence in the chapter.

But beneath the comedy, there is a serious point: Mikoto’s lack of supernatural ability may actually be what makes him uniquely suited to solving supernatural cases.

He can’t fight these phenomena conventionally. He has to understand them.

Hako’s Role Just Became Much More Interesting

For most of the early story, Hako has been the chaotic supernatural presence who balances Mikoto’s personality.

Chapter 3 suggests there is much more going on.

We learn that Adakae knew Mikoto’s mother and that Mikoto’s mother was previously connected to Hako’s box form. That one revelation immediately creates several questions about Hako’s origins and the relationship between the supernatural object and Mikoto’s family.

Then comes the final scene.

The missing streamer, Kazuto Kurate, known online as “Kutty,” is broadcasting from a supposedly haunted location. During the stream, wet black handprints suddenly appear against the window.

Kutty disappears.

The video ends.

Mikoto gets the case.

Then Hako says:

“Oh, about that…”

Cut to black.

Come on.

That is exactly the kind of cliffhanger designed to make readers immediately start theorizing.

My Biggest Chapter 4 Theory: Hako Knows More Than She’s Saying

If I had to bet on one thing happening in Chapter 4, it would be Hako finally explaining her reaction to the handprints.

I don’t necessarily think she caused Kutty’s disappearance. In fact, I think that would be too obvious.

What interests me more is the possibility that Hako recognizes the supernatural phenomenon.

The handprints could be connected to the event that originally transformed or trapped Hako in her current form. They could also be related to Mikoto’s mother, which would potentially tie the missing-person investigation directly into the central family mystery.

Either way, I don’t think the handprints are just another random ghost-of-the-week concept.

The series spent an entire chapter establishing Division Zero, Mikoto’s history, and his mother’s connection to Hako. It would be strange for Chapter 4 to completely ignore all of that.

The Anonymous Tipster Could Become a Major Character

Another detail I keep thinking about is the anonymous source who supposedly gave Kutty information about the haunted location.

That feels suspicious.

Why would someone deliberately send a supernatural streamer to a dangerous location?

There are several possibilities:

• A human occultist is experimenting with supernatural phenomena.
• Someone is deliberately feeding victims to a curse.
• The tipster knows about Hako or Mikoto’s family.
• The entire stream was designed as bait.

The last possibility is my favorite.

If Kutty was intentionally sent there, the question becomes: who was the intended target?

Was Kutty the target, or was somebody expecting Division Zero to investigate his disappearance?

If Mikoto eventually discovers that the case was engineered specifically to attract him, we could be looking at the first major antagonist of the series.

I Also Expect Takinuma to Stick Around

I would be genuinely surprised if Assistant Inspector Takinuma disappeared after Chapter 3.

Her introduction gives MikotoHako a potentially great character dynamic. She is disciplined, professional, and clearly takes her position seriously. Mikoto is basically the exact opposite.

The fact that he completely destroyed her confidence during their first major encounter makes their future interactions even more entertaining.

More importantly, her Spirit-Bound ability connected to her deceased cat could make her extremely useful during a supernatural investigation.

I can easily imagine Chapter 4 turning this into an uncomfortable three-person investigation involving Mikoto, Hako, and Takinuma.

And honestly, that’s probably the team I want to see.

Mikoto provides deduction, Hako provides supernatural knowledge, and Takinuma provides actual field experience.

That combination could work incredibly well.

Why Chapter 4 Could Change the Direction of the Manga

Up to this point, MikotoHako has successfully balanced supernatural mystery with comedy. Chapter 3, however, feels like the moment where the story starts expanding.

We now have:

1. A secret government supernatural division.
2. A missing occult streamer.
3. A mysterious black-handprint phenomenon.
4. Hako’s connection to Mikoto’s mother.
5. Mikoto’s unknown relationship with the Seven Spirits.
6. An unidentified person providing supernatural information to victims.

That’s a lot of moving pieces for such a young series.

What I particularly like is that the manga doesn’t seem interested in giving Mikoto a conventional power-up. His advantage remains his brain. That gives the supernatural mystery a different flavor because the protagonist has to investigate phenomena rather than simply overpower them.

Final Thoughts on MikotoHako Chapter 4

For me, Chapter 3 was the point where MikotoHako stopped feeling like a fun supernatural comedy with an unusual premise and started looking like a series with a much larger mystery planned underneath the jokes.

The funniest parts still work, especially Mikoto weaponizing everyone’s embarrassing secrets, but the story is increasingly hinting at something darker.

The biggest question going into Chapter 4 is obviously Hako’s connection to those black handprints.

I also want to know more about Mikoto’s mother, the Seven Spirits, and the mysterious person who sent Kutty to the haunted location. If even one of those threads connects to the others, Chapter 4 could become a major turning point.

My prediction? The missing streamer case won’t be a standalone investigation. I think it will eventually lead Mikoto and Hako directly into the mystery surrounding Hako’s past.

And if the final page of Chapter 3 is anything to go by, Hako already knows considerably more than she’s telling us.
