Kakeru doesn’t try to bully her into remembering. He doesn’t treat her memory as something he is entitled to reclaim. Instead, he stays with her. He helps her. He learns how to be there for the person she is now rather than constantly mourning the person she used to be.

And that is incredibly important for Kakeru’s character development.

Earlier in the story, he was someone who wanted to disappear. Now he’s willing to endure enormous emotional pain simply to make another person’s life a little easier.

In a strange way, Koharu saves Kakeru all over again without even remembering that she did it the first time.

Does Koharu Remember Kakeru?

Yes — the light novel material eventually provides hope.

Koharu’s memory loss isn’t the permanent end of their relationship. The recovery process takes time, and Kakeru has to accept that there isn’t a magical button he can press to fix everything.

Eventually, Koharu’s condition stabilizes and her memories begin to return. The emotional payoff works because Kakeru has already demonstrated that he will remain beside her even without the guarantee that she’ll remember him.

That makes the eventual restoration of their relationship feel earned rather than convenient.

It’s a devastating conclusion, but I don’t think the story is trying to say that their love was pointless because it didn’t last forever.

Quite the opposite.

Koharu’s recorded message for Kakeru reframes her entire life. She tells him not to spend the rest of his life drowning in grief. More importantly, she reminds him that meeting him changed everything.

Without Kakeru, she believes her life might have ended much earlier. With him, she experienced love, marriage, travel and motherhood.

That distinction matters enormously.

The story isn’t ultimately about whether love can defeat death. It’s about whether love can make a finite life feel complete.

What Should We Expect From the Season 1 Finale?

The anime appears to be using its first 12 episodes primarily to cover the major events surrounding the first volume and the initial relationship crisis. That means the Season 1 finale should remain focused on Kakeru and Koharu rather than rushing through their entire future.

I would expect the final episode to concentrate on three things:

Instead of simply repeating the college romance formula, a continuation could explore Kakeru and Koharu as adults. We’d potentially see graduation, marriage, family life, Koharu’s ongoing health struggles and eventually Sakura’s birth.

That would also allow the anime to take a completely different emotional direction. Season 1 is largely about two lonely young people finding each other. A second season could become a story about what it means to protect and cherish a life you’ve built together.

Whether that happens will depend on the commercial performance of the first season, including streaming numbers, physical releases and merchandise. But from a storytelling standpoint, there is absolutely enough material for the franchise to continue.

What surprised me most about this series is that its saddest moments don’t actually make me dislike the story. If anything, they made the earlier romantic scenes feel more valuable.

Knowing what Koharu eventually faces changes the way you look at her happiness. Every laugh matters more. Every conversation with Kakeru feels more precious. Love can exist even when it cannot be seen.

Koharu cannot see the night sky, and eventually she cannot even remember the person standing beside her. Yet the emotional connection between her and Kakeru survives both obstacles.

That’s a beautiful idea, even when the story takes it somewhere heartbreaking.

So, yes, the larger light novel story ultimately has tragedy waiting at the end. But I don’t think the upcoming Season 1 finale should be viewed through that lens alone. The first season is about Kakeru and Koharu choosing each other despite circumstances that keep trying to pull them apart.

And if the anime manages to stick the landing with that final clear-night-sky moment, I suspect a lot of us are going to finish Episode 12 with tears in our eyes and a very complicated feeling of happiness.
