Chapter 40 looked like a clever fight against a confusing Demonoid, but the final pages completely changed what that battle actually meant. Nona and Raloud were not simply fighting through a strange battlefield. They were trapped inside someone else’s magical memory.

And honestly, that reveal makes the entire previous chapter hit differently.

Written and illustrated by Hakuri, WITCHRIV has been getting increasingly good at taking a relatively simple supernatural setup and adding another layer underneath it. The latest twist involving the mysterious photo album, the Bureau investigator, and Nona’s unexplained thread abilities could push the story into much more dangerous territory.

So when is WITCHRIV Chapter 41 coming out, and what should fans expect after that cliffhanger?

What Actually Happened in WITCHRIV Chapter 40?

This is where I think Chapter 40 deserves more credit than it initially received.

At first, the fight seems like another complicated magical battle. The Demonoid creates multiple images of itself, making it almost impossible for Nona and Raloud to determine which target is real. Nona eventually notices something strange, though: the copies don’t behave correctly when viewed from above.

That tiny observation becomes the key to the entire fight.

Nona doesn’t have her tracking needle with her because she left it with Miramira, meaning she can’t control her threads with the same level of precision. Instead of treating that as a disadvantage, she changes the entire approach.

She becomes bait.

Raloud takes the high ground by using Nona’s thread and his wheel magic to launch himself into the air. The guy is practically made for this sort of moment, especially after Nona starts praising him. His reaction to being called the kind of fighter who “thrives off of praise” is exactly the sort of goofy character beat WITCHRIV needs in the middle of an otherwise brutal sequence.

From above, Raloud finally sees the truth.

The fake Demonoids disappear.

There is only one real body.

The Demonoid Trap Was Much Smarter Than It Looked

Raloud starts attacking from above, sending his wheels crashing down toward the Demonoid.

And then he misses.

At least, that’s what it looks like.

The Demonoid keeps dodging the attacks, while Raloud gets increasingly frustrated and starts throwing more wheel attacks across the battlefield. But those misses are actually giving Nona exactly what she needs.

Every dodge reveals information.

The Demonoid has to move somewhere whenever Raloud attacks. Nona can use those movements to narrow down its actual location.

There is another clever detail here. The Demonoid assumes that staying close to Nona will make it safer because Raloud obviously doesn’t want to fire his enormous attacks directly through his teammate.

That assumption is its mistake.

Nona understands exactly what the creature is thinking.

She waits.

The Demonoid moves into her range.

And suddenly—

CREAK.

Her threads lock around the real body.

That’s all Raloud needs.

He comes crashing down with another devastating attack, destroying the Demonoid and smashing the lantern responsible for the illusion.

The copies disappear.

For a moment, it looks like the fight is over.

It isn’t.

The Memory Album Twist Changes Everything

This is easily my favorite part of Chapter 40.

Nona and Raloud celebrate. Nona gives Raloud another compliment, and he responds with his usual ridiculous confidence. There is even a brief moment where Nona starts thinking about how much more her own thread magic might be capable of.

Then the environment changes.

Not gradually.

Completely.

The outdoor battlefield disappears, revealing a massive stone lighthouse and an interior floor covered with photographs.

Suddenly, the entire fight makes sense.

They weren’t wandering through some bizarre magical wilderness.

They were trapped inside a memory.

That also explains why destroying the Demonoid caused such a strange reaction. The monster wasn’t necessarily the real enemy. It was part of the mechanism keeping them trapped.

And the person responsible is standing right there.

Who Is the Mysterious Album Investigator?

The final pages introduce one of the most interesting threats WITCHRIV has presented so far.

The man appears to be connected to the Bureau of Magic Surveillance, and unlike the more straightforward monsters and fighters we’ve seen before, his power is based around containment and magical artifacts.

He carries a suitcase filled with photographs.

Those photographs appear to function as entrances into artificial memory spaces. Once someone is trapped inside, the investigator can essentially turn the memory into a battlefield and force his target to deal with whatever supernatural threat has been placed there.

That is a pretty nasty ability.

What’s even more interesting is his reaction when Nona and Raloud escape.

He isn’t simply angry.

He’s genuinely surprised.

The photographs have apparently turned blank, suggesting that the artifact itself has malfunctioned after Nona and Raloud broke out.

And then the guy stops talking.

He reaches into his equipment and pulls out a gigantic folding blade.

That is when the chapter stops being a puzzle and starts looking like a straight-up survival fight.

WITCHRIV Chapter 41 Spoilers and Predictions

Obviously, the actual Chapter 41 events cannot be confirmed until the chapter is released. But Chapter 40 leaves some very obvious questions hanging in the air.

1. Nona May Be the Real Target

The biggest question for me is why Nona was able to interfere with the memory itself.

Her thread magic has already shown unusual flexibility, but this feels different. She didn’t merely manipulate something inside the illusion. Her actions may have somehow connected the artificial memory to the real world.

If that’s what happened, the Bureau has a serious problem on its hands.

Nona could possess an ability that their magical technology wasn’t designed to handle.

That would also explain why the investigator seems so interested in understanding what happened instead of immediately dismissing it as random luck.

2. Cathie and Miramira Are in Bad Shape

The emotional side of the next chapter could be just as important as the action.

Cathie looks exhausted and frightened when Nona and Raloud finally return. Miramira is also present, which creates an interesting situation because the group doesn’t really have time to recover.

They escaped one trap only to discover that the person who created it is waiting outside.

If the investigator attacks immediately, Nona and Raloud may have to fight while protecting two people who are already compromised.

That could make the opening pages of Chapter 41 extremely chaotic.

3. The Investigator’s Weapon Matters

The enormous blade isn’t there just for style.

His magical artifact has apparently been damaged, so his fighting method may have to change completely. Instead of trapping everyone inside another photograph, he may need to defeat them physically.

That could reveal how dangerous the Bureau actually is when its agents aren’t relying on specialized magic tools.

It also gives Raloud a completely different opponent from the Demonoid.

The previous fight was about observation, positioning and exploiting a weakness.

The next one may simply be about surviving.

My Take on the Chapter 40 Cliffhanger

What I really like about this twist is that Hakuri didn’t just introduce a stronger monster.

That would have been the easy move.

Instead, WITCHRIV introduced a different kind of threat.

The Demonoid required the characters to understand a magical rule. The investigator represents the people who create those rules, weaponize them, and use them to hunt other magic users.

That’s much more interesting to me.

The Bureau suddenly feels less like a background organization and more like a system with specialized personnel, experimental tools and its own methods of dealing with rogue magic. The photo album is particularly creepy because it turns memories into prisons.

And now the prison has failed.

The investigator knows it.

Nona may not even understand why it happened.

That’s a dangerous combination.

For WITCHRIV Chapter 41, I’m expecting the story to spend less time explaining the mechanics and more time showing what happens when the characters are forced into a fight they weren’t prepared for. Nona has just demonstrated that her threads may interact with magical spaces in ways even the Bureau doesn’t understand, while Raloud is coming directly out of a major battle.

Nobody is walking into this confrontation at full strength.

And that makes the September 23 chapter especially interesting.

The biggest question isn’t simply whether Nona and Raloud can defeat the investigator.

It’s what the investigator will learn about Nona before the fight is over.

Because if her thread magic really did break a supposedly perfected memory artifact from the inside, Chapter 40 may have accidentally revealed something far more important than a new enemy.

It may have revealed that Nona herself doesn’t yet understand what she can do.
