Black Torch Season 2 Release Date: Is It Officially Confirmed For Production?

There are some anime that arrive with enormous expectations, and then there are shows like Black Torch that somehow sneak up on everyone.

When the series premiered during the Summer 2026 anime season, I honestly didn’t expect it to become one of the shows I would be checking Reddit for every week. But here we are. The combination of supernatural action, ninja mythology, sharp character designs, and the completely chaotic relationship between Jiro Azuma and Rago has made Black Torch surprisingly difficult to ignore.

Now that Season 1 is moving through its 12-episode run, the obvious question has started appearing everywhere:

Will there be a Black Torch Season 2?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a happy official answer yet.

As of August 2026, Black Torch Season 2 has not been officially confirmed for production by Shueisha, 100studio, or the anime’s production committee. And while that sounds disappointing, I don’t think fans should start writing the show’s obituary just yet.

The situation is much stranger than a typical anime renewal.

Black Torch Has Already Survived the Impossible

What makes this series so interesting is the story behind the anime itself.

The original Black Torch manga by Tsuyoshi Takaki was never a huge mainstream success during its initial serialization. The manga ran from 2016 to 2018 and ultimately ended after only 19 chapters, collected across five volumes.

Normally, that’s where the story ends.

A manga that receives a premature cancellation doesn’t usually come back years later with a high-profile anime adaptation. It certainly doesn’t normally become a talking point among international anime fans almost a decade after its original run.

Yet Black Torch somehow did exactly that.

That’s probably my favorite part of this entire situation. The anime isn’t simply another adaptation of a popular ongoing shonen manga. It’s effectively a second chance for a series that most people had already forgotten existed.

And judging from the reaction to the anime, plenty of viewers are now discovering why longtime fans never completely let it go.

So, Is Black Torch Season 2 Actually Confirmed?

No — not at the moment.

That’s the most important thing to establish before getting carried away by social media rumors.

Season 1 is still airing, and anime studios rarely announce a straightforward second season while the first one is still in progress unless the continuation was already planned internally.

So if you’re seeing posts claiming that Black Torch Season 2 has already been greenlit, I’d treat them very carefully unless they point toward an official announcement.

The Biggest Problem Isn’t Popularity — It’s the Manga

If Black Torch were an ongoing manga with dozens of untouched chapters, I would be much more optimistic about Season 2.

The problem is that there simply isn’t much source material left.

Season 1 is effectively working with the complete story created by Takaki. Once the anime reaches the end of its planned adaptation, there isn’t another large stack of manga chapters waiting to be animated.

That creates a huge problem for any potential continuation.

A normal anime sequel can simply continue adapting the manga. Black Torch can’t.

There are basically two ways forward.

1. An Original Anime Story

The production committee could decide to create a completely original continuation.

This would allow Jiro, Rago, and the other characters to continue fighting new supernatural threats without waiting for new manga chapters.

Personally, I’m torn on this idea.

On one hand, I absolutely want more Black Torch. On the other, the manga has a very specific identity, and an anime-original sequel would have to be handled extremely carefully.

Nobody wants a continuation that technically gives us more episodes but completely loses the personality that made the first season special.

2. Bring the Manga Back

The more exciting possibility would be a genuine Black Torch manga revival or sequel.

If the anime generates enough international attention and sales, Shueisha could potentially see value in bringing Takaki back for new material.

That would obviously take much longer, but from a storytelling perspective, it would be the ideal scenario.

Imagine getting a new Black Torch manga first, followed by another anime season several years later.

That would be an incredible comeback story.

Why the International Fanbase Matters

One thing I find particularly fascinating about Black Torch’s current situation is how important its international audience could become.

The series has developed a surprisingly passionate following outside Japan. Discussions across Reddit, YouTube, MyAnimeList, and social media have repeatedly focused on the same thing: how did a cancelled manga end up looking this good as an anime?

That’s exactly the kind of reaction that can create long-term value for a franchise.

Streaming has changed the way anime success is measured. A show doesn’t necessarily need enormous Japanese television ratings to become financially important.

International streaming numbers, merchandise, physical manga sales, digital purchases, and licensing revenue can all influence whether a property gets another chance.

And this is where the upcoming Black Torch Complete Box Set could become especially interesting for fans.

If the anime sends new viewers back toward the manga and those volumes suddenly start selling far better than they did before, Shueisha has a very concrete reason to reconsider the franchise.

Reddit Fans Seem Divided on One Big Question

From the fan perspective, I think the most interesting debate isn’t actually whether Black Torch should get Season 2.

Most fans seem to want more.

The real argument is what kind of Season 2 would be acceptable.

Some viewers would happily take an original sequel if it means seeing Jiro and Rago again.

Others would rather see the anime end after one excellent season than risk a continuation that doesn’t live up to Takaki’s original work.

I’m somewhere in the middle.

I’d love another season, but I don’t want Black Torch to become a franchise that exists simply because the first season performed well. If the creators have a genuinely good story to tell, I’m completely on board.

If the plan is just “make more episodes because people are watching,” I’d rather keep the first season as a memorable one-season phenomenon.

When Could Black Torch Season 2 Release?

This is where fans need to lower their expectations.

Even if an announcement appeared tomorrow, a second season wouldn’t magically arrive a few months later.

Anime production takes time, and Black Torch has the additional problem of requiring completely new story material.

If the studio chooses an anime-original route, the writing and pre-production process could occupy a significant portion of 2026 and 2027.

If Takaki returns to create new manga material first, the timeline could become even longer.

For that reason, 2028 or 2029 feels like a much more realistic window for a hypothetical Black Torch Season 2 than 2027.

And honestly? I’m okay with that.

I’d rather wait two or three years for a properly planned continuation than get a rushed sequel that doesn’t understand what made the original special.

My Verdict: Don’t Give Up on Black Torch Yet

At this point, Black Torch Season 2 isn’t confirmed, and there is no official release date.

But I also don’t think the lack of an announcement means the franchise is finished.

The anime has accomplished something genuinely unusual. It took a short, cancelled manga from years ago and turned it into a series that people are actively discussing in 2026.

That’s not nothing.

The biggest obstacle is obvious: there is no remaining manga story to simply adapt. But that same obstacle could also become the reason Black Torch gets an unusual second life.

If the anime continues performing well internationally, manga sales increase, and the production team believes there is enough demand, I can absolutely see the conversation around Season 2 becoming much more serious.

For now, I’m enjoying Season 1 and trying not to get ahead of myself.

Because if Black Torch has taught us anything, it’s that this series is pretty good at doing things nobody expects.

A cancelled manga becoming a 2026 anime hit was already unlikely.

A second season might be even harder — but I’m not ready to say it’s impossible.
