That trust becomes the greatest mistake of his life.
Hidden inside the basement is a diseased rat carrying the deadly Petrification Syndrome. Once released, the animal contaminates food inside the house, eventually infecting Roxy, who is pregnant at the time. Both she and her unborn child die, and that single tragedy destroys the foundation of Rudeus’ entire future.
Looking back, it’s honestly terrifying how such a massive disaster begins with opening one simple door. That’s exactly why this scene leaves such a lasting impression on readers.
The Dark Timeline Becomes a Complete Nightmare
After losing Roxy, Future Rudeus completely falls apart emotionally.

Ironically, this darker version also becomes one of the strongest mages in the world. Using ancient dragon magic, experimental theories, and his enormous mana reserves, he manages to create a primitive time-travel spell. It’s not elegant. It’s not safe. And it definitely isn’t guaranteed to work. But after losing absolutely everything, Oldeus has nothing left to lose himself.
Personally, this is one of my favorite parts of the entire storyline because the time travel doesn’t feel like a convenient reset button. It feels desperate. Every page makes it obvious that this is a final gamble from someone who already considers himself dead.
The Price of Rewriting History
Time travel in Mushoku Tensei isn’t treated like science fiction where characters casually jump between timelines. The spell tears Oldeus apart. Traveling roughly fifty years into the past pushes his body beyond its limits, destroying much of his internal organs during the journey. By the time he arrives, he’s already dying. Even so, he manages to accomplish three critical objectives:
- He warns his younger self about the infected rat.
- He reveals that Hitogami has manipulated him from the very beginning.

Final Thoughts
For me, Oldeus isn’t memorable because of his incredible magic or because he introduces time travel into the story. He’s memorable because he represents the version of Rudeus who never stopped paying for one terrible mistake.
His return isn’t about saving himself. That version of Rudeus already knows his own future can’t be fixed. Instead, he sacrifices the last remnants of his life so another version of himself can protect the family he failed to save.
It’s one of the most bittersweet moments in Mushoku Tensei, and honestly, one of the strongest examples of redemption I’ve seen in modern anime and light novel storytelling. Even after all the action, world-building, and magical battles, it’s Oldeus’ final decision that stays with me the longest.
