Rent-a-Girlfriend Chapter 438 Release date, Recap of Rent-a-Girlfriend Chapter 437
If there is one thing Rent-a-Girlfriend has taught me after all these chapters, it is that Kazuya Kinoshita can turn his biggest moment of confidence into a complete disaster in about three seconds.
Chapter 437 looked like it was setting Kazuya up for one of his best character moments in a long time. He finally managed to talk to Mami Nanami without getting completely swallowed by their messy history. He seemed more mature, more focused, and strangely calm. Most importantly, his thoughts were no longer consumed by Mami.
Then came the driving exam.
And suddenly, Kazuya was back to being Kazuya.
The ending of Rent-a-Girlfriend Chapter 437 leaves him with the front wheel of the car sitting on the curb during his practical driving test. His heroic internal cry of “FOR MIZUHARA!!” is immediately followed by the kind of automotive disaster that feels almost tailor-made for this manga.
That is exactly why I think Rent-a-Girlfriend Chapter 438 could be much more interesting than a simple “did Kazuya pass his test?” chapter.
Rent-a-Girlfriend Chapter 438 Release Date: Tuesday, September 1, 2026
English Release: The chapter is expected to be available through the official K Manga platform on the same day for readers in the United States.
Kazuya Finally Looks Mentally Stronger — Until the Car Says Otherwise
The most interesting part of Chapter 437 isn’t actually the crash.
It is everything that happens immediately before it.
Kazuya’s conversation with Mami could have easily sent him into another spiral. In the past, simply being around Mami was enough to make him question himself, overthink Chizuru, and get trapped inside his own head. This time, though, something feels different.
Kazuya genuinely wonders whether he helped Mami.
He isn’t obsessing over whether she still loves him. He isn’t trying to prove that he has “won” against her. Instead, he thinks about whether she is struggling and whether his answer meant something to her.
That is real character growth.
As a longtime reader, I actually liked this part more than I expected. Kazuya is still incredibly anxious, but his anxiety is no longer completely selfish. He’s beginning to recognize other people’s emotional problems without immediately making everything about his own romantic situation.
And then he reminds himself of what matters next.
His job hunt.
His workouts.
And, of course, one week until his date with Chizuru Mizuhara.
That last point is basically Kazuya’s motivational fuel.
Unfortunately, his motivational fuel doesn’t appear to improve his driving skills.
The “FOR MIZUHARA!” Moment Is Peak Kazuya
The transition into the driving exam is almost too perfect.
Kazuya has a mission. He has something he desperately wants to accomplish. He wants everything to go smoothly because this license is connected to his plans for the upcoming date with Chizuru.
The instructor tells him to begin parallel parking.
Kazuya focuses.
His determination reaches maximum level.
And internally, he screams:
“FOR MIZUHARA!”
I laughed.
Not because Kazuya is stupid, but because this is exactly how Rent-a-Girlfriend loves to punish him whenever he gets too confident.
The next panel practically destroys the entire heroic atmosphere.
BUMP.
The car hits the curb.
The vehicle tilts.
Kazuya’s expression completely collapses.
The guy who was mentally preparing himself like an action hero is suddenly staring at the situation in pure horror.
Honestly, it is one of those endings that feels ridiculous and completely appropriate at the same time.
So, Did Kazuya Just Fail His Driving Test?
This is the big question heading into Rent-a-Girlfriend Chapter 438.
There are basically two possibilities.
| Possibility | What It Could Mean |
|---|---|
| Immediate Failure | Kazuya may have committed a serious enough mistake to end the practical test immediately. |
| Major Point Deduction | He could correct the mistake and continue, although his score would take a huge hit. |
Personally, I wouldn’t assume the license is already gone.
Miyajima clearly wants the curb incident to create maximum panic, but manga cliffhangers are often designed to make the situation look worse than it actually is. There is still room for Kazuya to recover.
That said, I would absolutely not bet money on him suddenly becoming a flawless driver.
If he manages to recover from this, I expect the scene to be extremely stressful. Kazuya will probably overthink every movement of the car, every instruction from the examiner, and every glance from Mami.
Which brings us to the funniest part.
Mami Is Right There
Mami Nanami has just experienced one of the most emotionally complicated moments of her story.
She has been forced to confront feelings she doesn’t seem entirely comfortable admitting. Kazuya’s answer to her questions clearly affected her, and there is a growing sense that her old image of him is beginning to crack.
Then she watches him drive onto a curb.
I desperately want to see her reaction.
There are several directions Miyajima could take this.
- Mami laughs, completely destroying the seriousness of the previous conversation.
- She tries to comfort Kazuya while secretly finding the situation hilarious.
- She stays quiet, but her expression says everything.
- She realizes that this hopelessly awkward guy is still the person she has complicated feelings for.
The first option would be the funniest, but the last one might be the most interesting.
Mami doesn’t necessarily need another dramatic confession. What matters is how she reacts to seeing the “new” Kazuya behave exactly like the old Kazuya.
Because that contrast could be important.
He has grown emotionally, but he is still capable of spectacularly stupid mistakes.
And honestly? That’s probably why Chizuru loves him.
The Driving Date Might Be in Serious Trouble
The practical reason this cliffhanger matters is obvious.
Kazuya has been preparing for his date with Chizuru, and the driving license is part of that plan. If he fails the test, his carefully constructed idea of the perfect date could collapse.
But here’s my unpopular opinion:
That might actually make the date better.
Think about it.
Kazuya has been putting enormous pressure on himself to create an impressive experience for Chizuru. A car, carefully planned logistics, a special destination — everything has to be perfect in his head.
But Kazuya has never really been at his best when he tries too hard to manufacture perfection.
His strongest moments with Chizuru usually happen when something unexpected forces them to simply be together.
If the driving plan disappears, we could get a much more intimate date involving trains, walking, restaurants, or some completely improvised alternative.
And that could bring the story back to what made the early parts of Rent-a-Girlfriend work so well.
Two people.
A little time together.
No giant romantic spectacle required.
Chapter 438 Could Turn Failure Into Character Development
This is why I don’t think a failed driving exam would necessarily be a setback for Kazuya’s character.
In fact, it could be another test of his maturity.
The old Kazuya would probably collapse completely.
He would convince himself that he ruined everything, that Chizuru would be disappointed, and that the entire date was now meaningless.
The newer Kazuya might still panic — obviously — but eventually accept that things don’t always go according to plan.
That would be much more valuable than simply getting his license.
Confidence isn’t never failing. It’s continuing after the failure.
And Kazuya desperately needs to learn that.

My Prediction for Rent-a-Girlfriend Chapter 438
If I had to predict the next chapter, I don’t think we’ll get an instant clean resolution.
I expect the chapter to spend a lot of time on the immediate aftermath of the curb incident.
Kazuya will panic.
Mami will react.
The instructor will probably deliver the verdict.
And there is a good chance Kazuya will spend at least part of the chapter believing that his date with Chizuru has been completely destroyed.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if Miyajima uses the situation to create another unexpected emotional moment between Kazuya and Mami.
That is the part I’m watching most closely.
The driving test is funny, but Mami’s emotional state is much more important to the long-term story.
Chapter 437 showed us a Kazuya who can finally listen to Mami without being controlled by their past. Chapter 438 could show us how Mami reacts to the realization that Kazuya really has changed.
And then, naturally, he drives onto a curb.
Because this is Rent-a-Girlfriend.
Final Thoughts
The ending of Chapter 437 is ridiculous, hilarious, and surprisingly important.
Kazuya has spent so much time worrying about becoming the perfect boyfriend for Chizuru that he has turned this driving test into another enormous personal mission. Then, at the exact moment he reaches maximum confidence, reality hits him with a curb.
That’s classic Kazuya.
But underneath the comedy, there is genuine progress.
His attitude toward Mami feels different. His priorities are changing. His relationship with Chizuru is moving toward another major milestone. And now his carefully planned date may be in danger before it even starts.
For me, that’s what makes Rent-a-Girlfriend Chapter 438 worth watching.
I don’t just want to know whether Kazuya passes his driving test.
I want to know whether he can finally handle something going wrong without believing that his entire world is falling apart.
And if Mami starts laughing while he’s crying behind the wheel?
Well, that’s probably the most Rent-a-Girlfriend outcome imaginable.
Chapter 438 can’t come soon enough.
