Re:Zero Arc 6 Teleportation Calamity Discovered: The Witch Shadow and Vollachia Event Explained
There are plenty of shocking moments in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, but the ending of Arc 6 is on another level.
One moment, Subaru is fighting to survive inside the terrifying Pleiades Watchtower. The next, everything goes completely insane: Subaru, Rem, and Louis Arneb are thrown far away from the tower and end up in the dangerous territory of the Vollachian Empire.
If you experienced this transition for the first time, you probably had the same reaction I did:
“Wait… what just happened?”
The Arc 6 teleportation disaster is one of those Re:Zero scenes that becomes even more interesting the more you think about it. It isn’t simply a convenient way for the story to move Subaru into Arc 7. There are witches, Authorities, the mysterious Corridor of Memories, the Divine Dragon Volcanica, and the terrifying shadow of Satella all colliding at almost the same moment.
And honestly, that’s exactly why I love this part of Re:Zero.
The series takes something that could have been a simple transition between arcs and turns it into another giant mystery.
So, let’s break down what happened—and, more importantly, what I personally think the scene is trying to tell us.
Louis Arneb Was the Real Trigger
To understand the disaster, we have to start with Louis Arneb.
Louis is one of the Sin Archbishops of Gluttony, but her role in Arc 6 becomes much stranger than simply being another enemy Subaru has to defeat.
Inside the Corridor of Memories, Louis becomes connected to Subaru’s memories and experiences. The crucial problem is that she ends up encountering something almost nobody in the world of Re:Zero is supposed to understand:
Return by Death.
Imagine suddenly experiencing Subaru’s accumulated deaths.
Not hearing about them.
Not watching them.
Actually experiencing the terror, pain, hopelessness, and repeated trauma behind them.
For someone like Louis, who is obsessed with experiencing life and understanding what it means to truly live, this is basically psychological torture on a cosmic scale.
And this is where the situation becomes much bigger than Louis herself.
Return by Death is connected to Satella, the Witch of Envy, and the story has repeatedly shown that information surrounding Subaru’s ability is incredibly dangerous.
Louis didn’t simply discover one of Subaru’s secrets.
She became entangled with something that appears to be directly protected by the Witch.
That is why I don’t think the shadow that appears afterward should be viewed as just another random magical attack.
The Black Shadow Wasn’t Just “Dark Magic”
One of the coolest and creepiest aspects of the scene is the appearance of the enormous black shadow associated with the Witch of Envy.
Throughout Re:Zero, Satella’s shadow has never felt like ordinary magic. It behaves more like a force that doesn’t completely obey the normal rules of the world.
It spreads.
It consumes.
It reaches Subaru.
And when it appears around him, the feeling is less like someone casting a spell and more like reality itself is being swallowed.
This is where things get particularly interesting.
A common interpretation among fans is that Satella’s manifestation is connected to the protection of Subaru and the secrecy surrounding Return by Death. Louis had become deeply entangled with Subaru, so the Witch’s response may have been directed at that connection.
Personally, I think the most fascinating part is that Satella doesn’t necessarily need to understand the situation in a completely rational way.
The Witch of Envy and Satella have always been presented with an unsettling duality. There is something obsessive and almost instinctive about her attachment to Subaru.
So when Subaru is threatened—or when something interferes with the relationship between Subaru and Return by Death—the response can feel almost automatic.
And that’s much scarier than a normal villain making a calculated decision.
So Was Satella Trying to Teleport Subaru?
This is where things become complicated.
It’s tempting to describe the event as:
Satella appeared → used shadow magic → accidentally teleported Subaru to Vollachia.
But Re:Zero is rarely that straightforward.
The exact mechanics behind the displacement are still something fans debate, and some explanations often presented in fandom discussions go beyond what the story has explicitly confirmed.
What we can say is that the event involves an enormous supernatural disturbance around the Pleiades Watchtower, Subaru’s connection to the Witch, and Volcanica’s intervention.
The result is not a clean, controlled transportation.
Something goes catastrophically wrong.
And that’s the important part.
Volcanica Changes Everything
This is probably my favorite part of the entire sequence.
The Divine Dragon Volcanica is already one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the ancient history of Re:Zero. He is connected to the legendary figures of the past and the events surrounding the Witch.
Then, during the climax of Arc 6, this ancient being becomes directly involved in the chaos.
When Volcanica reacts to the Witch’s presence and unleashes his power, the situation becomes even more unstable.
Think of it this way:

Instead of giving Subaru another straightforward victory or defeat, Tappei turns the entire situation into a magical accident with consequences nobody fully controls.
Why Did Subaru End Up in Vollachia?
Now we reach the million-dollar question.
Why Vollachia?
Was Subaru’s arrival there completely random?
Was it fate?
Was Satella somehow involved?
Or was there a larger plan behind it?
At the moment, there isn’t a simple answer that explains everything.
And honestly, I hope we don’t get one too quickly.

Theory 1: It Was a Magical Accident
The simplest explanation is that the forces involved caused an uncontrolled spatial displacement.
The shadow, the tower, Volcanica’s power, and the supernatural properties of the location all collided.
The result?
Subaru and the others were thrown somewhere they were never supposed to be.
This explanation fits the chaotic nature of the scene.
Theory 2: There Was Some Form of Fate Behind It
The more exciting theory is that Subaru’s arrival in Vollachia wasn’t completely meaningless.
Re:Zero constantly plays with fate, prophecy, mysterious observers, and events that seem connected across hundreds of years.
So perhaps Subaru being sent toward Vollachia was part of something larger.
I’m personally more interested in this possibility—not because I think Satella necessarily planned every detail, but because Subaru’s arrival in Vollachia feels too narratively important to dismiss as a random accident.
The series loves making coincidence suspicious.
What the Teleportation Did to Subaru
The most important consequence isn’t actually the distance Subaru traveled.
It’s what the disaster took away from him.
Before Vollachia, Subaru had gradually built a support system.
He had Emilia.
He had Beatrice.
He had the people of the Emilia Camp.
He had allies who understood his personality and trusted him.
Then Vollachia happens.
Suddenly, Subaru is separated from almost everyone he knows.
And this is exactly the kind of situation where Re:Zero hurts him the most.
Subaru’s greatest strength isn’t physical power. It’s his ability to build relationships, gather information, die, learn, and try again.
Take away his allies, and suddenly the equation changes.
Vollachia forces Subaru to survive without the safety net he spent so many arcs building.
That’s why the teleportation is much more than a plot device.
It resets Subaru’s circumstances without resetting his character development.
Rem’s Awakening Makes the Situation Even Worse
Then there is Rem.
After everything that happened to her, Rem finally wakes up—but this isn’t the happy reunion Subaru imagined.
She doesn’t remember him.
Think about how brutal that is.
Subaru spent so much time fighting for Rem, protecting her, and believing that eventually she would wake up.
When she finally does, she looks at him like he’s a stranger.
For me, this is one of the cruelest emotional twists in the entire story.
Subaru gets what he wanted.
And yet, he doesn’t really get it.
That’s Re:Zero in a nutshell.
Louis Becomes Something Completely Different
Louis’ transformation is another major consequence.
The terrifying Sin Archbishop who once represented Gluttony ends up in a completely different psychological state.
After everything surrounding Subaru’s memories and Return by Death, Louis is essentially broken by the experience.
Instead of functioning as the calculating enemy we knew before, she becomes vulnerable and dependent.
And that creates one of the strangest relationships in the series.
Subaru now has to deal with someone who was once his enemy but is no longer behaving like the person he fought.
It’s another example of Re:Zero asking a very uncomfortable question:
If someone’s identity changes completely, are they still the same person you hated before?

The Arc 6 Teleportation in Five Steps
If the entire sequence feels confusing, this is how I personally break it down:
- Louis becomes connected to Subaru’s memories and experiences.
- The connection to Return by Death brings the Witch of Envy into the situation.
- Satella’s enormous shadow manifests around the tower.
- Volcanica intervenes, causing the already unstable situation to escalate.
- Subaru, Rem, and Louis are displaced far away, eventually beginning their story in Vollachia.
The exact magical mechanics behind the displacement remain one of the more mysterious elements of the story, which is why fan theories continue to exist.
And personally?
I think that’s a good thing.
Why This Scene Works So Well
A lot of fantasy stories use teleportation when the author simply needs to move characters from Point A to Point B.
Re:Zero does something much more interesting.
The teleportation completely changes the genre around Subaru.
Arc 6 is claustrophobic, psychological, mysterious, and almost like a supernatural survival horror story.
Then Arc 7 throws Subaru into war, politics, military power, unfamiliar cultures, and an empire where weakness can get you killed.
The transition feels violent because it is supposed to feel violent.
Subaru doesn’t simply travel to a new location.
His entire world gets ripped away from him.
And that’s why I think the Arc 6 ending is one of the strongest transitions in the entire Re:Zero story.
The shadow of Satella, the mysterious nature of Return by Death, Volcanica’s involvement, Louis’ transformation, and Rem’s awakening all come together to create a moment that still leaves room for theories.
Maybe the teleportation was an accident.
Maybe fate had a hand in it.
Maybe we’re still missing a huge piece of the puzzle.
Knowing Re:Zero, I wouldn’t be surprised if the truth turns out to be far stranger than any of the theories currently floating around.
And honestly, that’s exactly how I want it.
Because the moment everything makes perfect sense in Re:Zero is probably the moment we should start worrying.
