There is a particular feeling that Dragon Ball Super delivers better than almost anything else. One minute, Goku is excited about finding someone strong enough to give him a decent fight. The next, he’s standing in front of beings who can erase entire universes without breaking a sweat. And somehow, he still wants to throw…
Some anime need twenty episodes before they finally get going. Mission: Yozakura Family basically throws you into the deep end from the start. One minute, you’re watching a traumatized high school student trying to survive another day at school. The next, he’s marrying his childhood friend, discovering that her family consists of professional spies, and…
Some anime villains are frightening because they are stronger than everyone else. Others are unsettling because you can never quite figure out what they want. Momo Yozakura manages to be both, and that combination makes him one of the most intriguing figures in Mission Yozakura Family. The series initially presents the Yozakura siblings as an…
One of the things I love about Mission Yozakura Family is that Taiyo Asano doesn’t start out as the kind of protagonist who makes you think he’s destined to become the strongest person in the room. He isn’t a naturally gifted fighter who spends the first episode hiding his true power, and he doesn’t have…
Some manga have a way of sticking with you long after you finish the final chapter. PSYREN is one of those series for me. Toshiaki Iwashiro’s supernatural shonen manga has spent years being brought up in discussions about underrated Weekly Shonen Jump classics, and the fact that it went so long without an anime adaptation…
There’s something special about a new anime opening that makes you want to watch it again the second it ends. Sometimes it’s the music, sometimes it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot that manga readers immediately recognize, and sometimes it’s simply seeing your favorite characters back in action. Mission Yozakura Family Season 2 Part 2 is giving fans…
There are anime announcements that make you nod and move on, and then there are announcements that make you stare at your screen for a few seconds because you genuinely cannot believe they are real. For me, Psyren belongs firmly in the second category. For years, Psyren was one of those manga titles that anime…
There are anime announcements, and then there are the announcements that make an entire generation of fans suddenly start checking Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, and every possible corner of the internet at once. Naruto is heading toward one of those moments. Studio Pierrot and VIZ Media have officially announced a special “NARUTO: What’s Next?” presentation for…
There’s something about Tougen Anki that gets under your skin. At first glance, it looks like another supernatural battle shonen: angry teenager, secret bloodline, special powers, mysterious school, rival factions, and a lot of people punching each other through walls. But the deeper you get into the story, the more interesting the setup becomes. The…
