There is something ridiculously satisfying about watching a character start with absolutely nothing and slowly turn it into something worth protecting. That is exactly why The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects became one of those Summer 2026 anime that I kept coming back to, even when I had plenty of other shows on my watchlist.

Also known by its Japanese title, Ryomin 0-nin Start no Henkyo Ryoushu-sama, the series takes a familiar fantasy setup and does something surprisingly relaxing with it. Instead of immediately throwing its protagonist into another demon war or world-ending crisis, it gives Dias a gigantic empty territory, zero residents, almost no infrastructure, and basically tells him: “Good luck building a civilization.”

And honestly? I loved that premise.

Dias is a legendary warrior who has already spent years fighting for his country. After finally receiving land as a reward from the king, he probably imagines that his retirement will be peaceful. The problem is that his new territory is essentially an enormous stretch of wilderness sitting on the edge of civilization. There are no proper houses, no established economy, and most importantly, no people.

Then Alna enters the picture.

The mysterious Onikin girl quickly becomes much more than just another fantasy companion. Her relationship with Dias gives the story its emotional center, while their attempts to survive and eventually establish a functioning settlement create the slow-burn progression that makes the anime so easy to watch.

Now that Season 1 is approaching its conclusion, the obvious question is: will The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects Season 2 actually happen?

One of my favorite parts of this premise is watching an empty piece of land slowly become a real community. Naturally, that becomes much more interesting once the settlement starts attracting people from outside.

More humans, demi-humans, craftsmen, merchants, farmers, and travelers could arrive as word spreads about Dias’s territory. A place that originally had zero subjects could eventually become a surprisingly diverse society.

Of course, more people also means more problems.

• Food and resource management become more complicated.
• Trade routes need to be established and protected.
• Different races and cultures have to learn how to live together.
• Dias has to become a better administrator rather than simply relying on his strength.

That last point is especially interesting to me. Dias can probably defeat most physical threats without breaking a sweat, but punching a diplomatic problem isn’t exactly a long-term political strategy.

2. More of Alna’s Story

Alna is another major reason I want a second season.

Her relationship with Dias isn’t just there to provide romantic comedy moments. Her Onikin background gives the series an opportunity to explore parts of the world that Season 1 only begins to introduce.

I would love to see more about her people, their history, their relationship with other races, and what Alna’s life looked like before she met Dias.

The romance itself also deserves more room to breathe. Their relationship developed in a wonderfully unusual way, and I think the domestic side of their life could become one of the strongest parts of a potential Season 2.

3. Political Problems Are Coming

This is probably inevitable.

A powerful warrior suddenly establishing a prosperous territory on the frontier sounds great until neighboring nobles realize that the supposedly insignificant wasteland is becoming economically valuable.

Once Dias has population, agriculture, trade, and influence, people in the surrounding territories will start paying attention.

That could lead to:

• Political pressure from neighboring lords.
• Economic competition and trade disputes.
• Attempts to manipulate or spy on Dias.
• Conflicts involving the royal government.
• Potential military confrontations.

And the funniest part is that Dias probably still won’t understand why everyone is making such a big deal about him.

Why I Think Season 2 Could Be Better Than Season 1

Season 1 had to do a lot of introductory work. We needed to meet Dias, understand his personality, meet Alna, learn about the frontier, and watch the first stages of settlement.

That foundation is necessary, but it also means the story has been holding back some of its potential.

Once the settlement is established, the writers can start playing with bigger ideas without constantly explaining the basics. We can see the economy develop. We can see new characters arrive. We can watch different communities interact. We can see Dias make decisions that affect hundreds or thousands of people rather than simply worrying about what to build next.

That is where The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects could really distinguish itself from other isekai and fantasy anime.

It isn’t simply about having an overpowered protagonist.

It’s about watching what happens when an absurdly powerful person is given responsibility for an entire community.

What Fans Are Saying About the Anime

The reception has been particularly interesting because this isn’t the kind of show that needs constant action to keep people talking.

Across anime communities, viewers have repeatedly highlighted the relaxing atmosphere, gradual progression, character relationships, and satisfying settlement-building elements. Fans who enjoy series such as Farming Life in Another World have obvious reasons to gravitate toward it, but The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects also has enough character drama and fantasy world-building to stand on its own.

Personally, I think the biggest appeal is the feeling of progress.

Watching a field become farmland, watching a few people become a community, and watching a forgotten frontier slowly become something important is strangely addictive. There is no need for the story to constantly scream that the stakes are enormous. Sometimes seeing a new building appear is enough.

So, where does everything stand?

Season 2 has not been officially confirmed as of September 2026. There is also no announced release date. However, the franchise has a substantial source-material foundation, a premise that naturally supports continued storytelling, and a fanbase that seems genuinely invested in seeing Dias’s territory grow.

For those reasons, I’m optimistic.

I’m not going to pretend that a Season 2 announcement is guaranteed. Anime production is complicated, and popularity alone doesn’t automatically secure another cour.

Actually, I think the story is only beginning to show what makes its premise so good.

Dias started with a massive empty territory and absolutely nobody to rule. Now he has Alna, settlers, growing resources, new relationships, and an increasingly important position in the world around him. That’s a fantastic setup for a sequel.

So for now, I’ll be keeping my expectations somewhere between hopeful and cautiously optimistic. If Season 2 gets announced, I genuinely hope the studio gives it enough time to breathe rather than rushing it onto the schedule.

Because if we’re going back to Dias’s frontier, I want to see that empty grassland become a kingdom.
