I honestly thought Chapter 28 of The Hero’s Bereaved Family was going to be a relatively simple setup chapter.

Yeah. About that.

Instead, Maki Kanemaki turned a dwarven drinking ritual into one of the funniest scenes in the manga and then used the final pages to drop a genuinely nasty betrayal. That is exactly why I enjoy this series. It can spend several pages making its characters look ridiculous, and then suddenly hit you with a plot twist that changes how you see the entire group.

With Chapter 28 now out, attention has naturally shifted toward The Hero’s Bereaved Family Chapter 29. The big question isn’t simply who will fight next. It’s whether the strange alliance formed in the previous chapter can survive once everyone realizes what Tokoyo and the mysterious Gothic sister are actually planning.

And I have a feeling things are about to get ugly.

Chapter 28 Was Way More Important Than It Looked

The title, “Sake Ritual,” makes the chapter sound like a comedy detour. And, honestly, a huge chunk of it is comedy.

Dylan encounters Tokoyo and immediately gets dragged into an uncomfortable confrontation involving the Hero’s inheritance and the mysterious sword. Tokoyo clearly isn’t interested in trusting random siblings who show up claiming they’re part of the same family.

That’s where the Hero’s seal becomes important.

Dylan and the others aren’t simply introducing themselves. They’re proving their connection to the legendary Hero and, by extension, their right to participate in this insane inheritance conflict.

But Tokoyo isn’t buying the friendly-family act.

Her response is basically: prove you’re worthy of my trust.

Her solution?

A barrel of sake.

Not a cup. Not a ceremonial drink. An entire freaking barrel.

The Dwarven Drinking Challenge

This is probably one of my favorite comedic sequences in the recent chapters because it completely destroys the serious image of several characters.

Tokoyo explains that finishing a barrel together is part of the Dwarven tradition when two sides meet as equals. Gil accepts the challenge with the confidence of someone who clearly has no idea what he’s getting himself into.

And then he takes one sip.

Instant knockout.

Glasses flying. Body hitting the floor. Dignity gone.

The Elf brother isn’t much better. He tries to step up after Gil collapses, only to immediately follow him into unconsciousness.

Dylan then gets involved because apparently nobody in this family knows when to stop making terrible decisions.

He also fails.

At that point, I was already laughing. But the real surprise comes from the Gothic sister.

She doesn’t just survive the Dwarven alcohol.

She absolutely destroys the challenge.

She drinks alongside Tokoyo like this is completely normal and casually declares that the sake is nothing.

That’s when the chapter stops being a goofy drinking chapter and starts becoming something much more interesting.

Tokoyo and the Gothic Sister Have a Secret Plan

This is the part I keep thinking about.

While Gil, Dylan, and the Elf brother are unconscious, Tokoyo and the Gothic sister sit together and talk privately.

Tokoyo basically challenges the idea that the strong should follow the rules created by the weak.

Then she asks the question that completely changes the chapter:

Does the Gothic sister want the inheritance for herself?

Her answer is simple.

Yes.

No hesitation.

No fake attempt to defend her brothers.

No dramatic speech about family.

Just “I do.”

That is a huge character moment.

Until now, the Gothic sister could easily be interpreted as another powerful member of the group who was willing to cooperate with Gil’s attempt to reduce unnecessary bloodshed. Chapter 28 tells us that this interpretation might have been completely wrong.

She may have been cooperating because it was useful.

That’s a very different thing.

Why Chapter 29 Could Be Dangerous

I don’t think Chapter 29 needs to start with some gigantic battle. In fact, I’d prefer it didn’t.

The previous chapter already created a much more interesting situation: two sides of the same family are now playing completely different games.

Here’s what I’m expecting.

That last one could be particularly important.

The Elf Brother Might Know Everything

The Elf brother appears to be the first of the unconscious group to start waking up.

And that’s not a random detail.

If he heard even part of Tokoyo’s conversation with the Gothic sister, he could become the one person capable of exposing the betrayal.

But would he actually tell Gil?

That’s where things get interesting.

He clearly cares about his siblings. He was also one of the people genuinely trying to stop the inheritance war from becoming a massacre. If he discovers that his sister has secretly decided to pursue the entire inheritance, his reaction could go in several directions.

He might confront her.

He might stay quiet because he doesn’t know whom to trust.

Or he could pretend he heard nothing and start playing his own game.

Personally, I think the third option would be the most fun.

What About the Mysterious Letter?

There’s another detail from Chapter 28 that I don’t want readers to overlook.

The Gothic sister is carrying a white envelope marked with the Hero’s seal.

We still don’t know everything contained inside it.

And that feels very deliberate.

The obvious possibility is that the letter contains information connected to the inheritance itself. It could reveal a location, identify another condition of the Hero’s will, or explain something about the mysterious weapon Dylan noticed earlier.

The Mystic Sword is especially suspicious.

Dylan immediately notices the weapon situation around Tokoyo, which suggests there’s more going on with her heritage and equipment than the chapter initially explains.

If Chapter 29 opens that letter, we could suddenly get a much clearer picture of what this inheritance war is actually about.

Or Kanemaki could tease us again and reveal absolutely nothing.

Honestly, both possibilities feel equally likely.

Gothic Sister Could Be the Real Threat

Tokoyo is obviously dangerous.

She’s physically powerful, heavily armed, and connected to Dwarven heritage. She’s also confident enough to manipulate the other characters into following her rules.

But the Gothic sister is potentially much scarier.

Why?

She combines power with patience.

Her fire magic already makes her dangerous, but her behavior in Chapter 28 suggests she’s not simply a hot-headed fighter. She waits, watches, and then chooses the moment when everyone else is vulnerable.

That’s exactly what happened with Gil.

He thinks they’re building an alliance.

She might already be planning how to dismantle it.

And the funniest part is that Gil is currently lying on the floor completely oblivious to all of this.

My Biggest Prediction for Chapter 29

If I had to bet on one thing, I’d say Chapter 29 will focus more on the consequences of the secret alliance than on immediate combat.

I want to see the characters wake up first.

I want Gil to confidently start talking about their peaceful strategy while the reader knows his own sister has already agreed to betray him.

That dramatic irony could be fantastic.

At the same time, Tokoyo and the Gothic sister can quietly begin moving toward whatever prize the Hero left behind.

The inheritance war doesn’t need another random battle right now.

It needs secrets, manipulation, and characters realizing they’ve trusted the wrong people.

And Chapter 28 just gave us all three.

Final Thoughts

I’ll admit it: I underestimated Chapter 28.

What looked like a goofy drinking chapter turned into one of the more important setup chapters for the current arc. The comedy worked because the characters were allowed to completely embarrass themselves, but the final conversation between Tokoyo and the Gothic sister gave the whole thing a darker meaning.

Now the alliance isn’t united at all.

Gil wants cooperation. Dylan wants peace. The Elf brother wants to stop the fighting. Tokoyo wants the strong to take control. And the Gothic sister apparently wants the entire inheritance.

That’s a recipe for disaster.

My biggest question going into The Hero’s Bereaved Family Chapter 29 is simple: how long can Tokoyo and the Gothic sister hide their agreement?

If the Elf brother heard their conversation, the secret may already be in danger.

And if he didn’t?

Then Gil is about to wake up from the worst hangover of his life without realizing that the real fight has already started.
