If there’s one moment in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 that completely changed how I looked at Rudeus, it wasn’t a flashy battle or some overpowered magic spell. It was the arrival of Oldeus.
I had already seen plenty of anime play with time travel before, but this felt different. It wasn’t about creating a cool paradox or giving the protagonist another chance because the plot demanded it. Instead, it was the story of a man who had already lost everything imaginable and decided that erasing himself from history was the only way to save the people he loved.
That’s what makes Oldeus one of the most tragic versions of a main character I’ve seen in recent years.
One Small Choice Destroyed an Entire Future
One of the things I appreciate about Mushoku Tensei is that its biggest disasters rarely begin with some world-ending battle. Sometimes they start with something incredibly ordinary.
In Oldeus’ timeline, everything begins after Rudeus finally settles into a peaceful family life. Things seem stable for once, which is exactly when Hitogami decides to interfere again.
Instead of attacking directly, Hitogami gives Rudeus what sounds like harmless advice during one of their dream conversations.
He simply tells him to check the basement.
That’s it.
Rudeus listens, opens the cellar, finds nothing unusual, and leaves.
Unfortunately, opening that door releases an infected rat carrying the deadly Magic Stone Disease. Nobody notices it. Nobody realizes what’s about to happen.
The rat contaminates food stored inside the house, and Roxy, who is secretly pregnant, unknowingly eats it.
From there, everything spirals out of control.
Even advanced healing and detoxification magic can’t save her because the disease requires an extremely specialized Divine-level cure. By the time anyone understands what’s happening, it’s already too late.
Looking back, it’s almost painful how preventable the entire tragedy feels.
Losing Roxy Was Only the Beginning
Most stories would probably stop after Roxy’s death.
Mushoku Tensei doesn’t.
Instead, it shows how grief slowly destroys someone who was finally learning to be happy.
Rudeus refuses to accept her death and searches desperately for a way to reverse it. Together with Cliff and Zanoba, he heads toward the Holy Kingdom of Millis hoping ancient religious records might contain a miracle.
Instead, everything falls apart.
The mission ends in complete disaster.
- Cliff dies.
- Zanoba dies.
- The search fails.
- Rudeus returns home with nothing.
As if that wasn’t enough, Sylphiette also dies during the chaos while Rudeus is away.
At that point, the cheerful, awkward man we’ve followed since the beginning is effectively gone.
Oldeus is born.
Why Oldeus Became So Powerful
One detail that often surprises anime-only viewers is that Oldeus isn’t simply an older Rudeus.
He’s a version that spent decades with nothing except revenge keeping him alive.
Without family or friends to protect, he throws himself entirely into magical research, eventually developing techniques few people in the world could even imagine.
Some of his greatest achievements include:
- Gravity Magic, allowing him to manipulate weight, movement, and even flight.
- Electricity Magic, a destructive technique unlike conventional elemental spells.
- Countless improvements to offensive magic that push him close to the strongest beings in the Six-Faced World.
Ironically, the stronger he becomes, the lonelier he gets.
His incredible magic never fills the emptiness left by losing everyone.
Eris Tried to Save Him
One of my favorite parts of this storyline is that Eris never truly gives up on Rudeus.
Even after he becomes emotionally distant and obsessed with revenge, she continues searching for him.
She keeps trying.
She keeps believing.
Sadly, Oldeus has already become someone almost impossible to reach.
The heartbreaking climax comes during a confrontation with Atofe, where Eris sacrifices herself to protect him.
That moment finally breaks whatever remained of Oldeus’ heart.
By then, however, it’s far too late.
The Impossible Time Travel Spell
After decades of failure, Oldeus reaches a painful conclusion.
He cannot beat Hitogami by continuing forward.
The only remaining option is to go backward.
Working from ancient Dragon Race magical knowledge and research connected to Orsted, he develops an experimental spell designed to send himself into the past.
The magic is barely stable and comes with terrifying consequences.

- Kill the infected rat immediately.
- Accept Eris back into your life.
- Work together with Orsted instead of treating him as an enemy.
Perhaps the most valuable thing Oldeus brings isn’t his magic.

Every death.
He records everything so his younger self won’t repeat the same path.
Personally, I think the diary is even more powerful than the time travel spell itself. Knowledge becomes the real weapon.

This question appears constantly among fans.
The answer is actually more interesting than the usual multiverse explanation.
According to the established lore, Mushoku Tensei doesn’t rely on endless parallel universes.

The moment Rudeus reads the diary and changes his actions, the future that created Oldeus stops existing.
In other words, Oldeus knowingly sacrifices his own existence.
He isn’t trying to save himself.
He’s making sure that version of himself is never born.
That’s an incredibly bittersweet ending when you really think about it.
Why This Storyline Works So Well
I’ve always liked Mushoku Tensei because it isn’t afraid to let actions have consequences.
Oldeus isn’t a cool alternate version designed to show off stronger magic.
He’s what happens when grief wins.
He’s what Rudeus becomes after years of guilt, loneliness, and manipulation.
At the same time, his final decision proves that he never completely lost the person he used to be.
His last act isn’t revenge.
It’s love.
He gives away his future so someone else can have a better one.
For me, that’s why Oldeus remains one of the strongest emotional moments in the entire series. Instead of glorifying despair, the story turns its darkest timeline into the ultimate lesson about hope, family, and choosing a different path before it’s too late.
