The “amnesia Subaru” storyline shocked the entire fandom for a reason. Watching Subaru lose all the pain, growth, confidence, and relationships he built across previous arcs was genuinely uncomfortable. He wasn’t just weak again — he became a stranger inside his own life.

But this is Re:Zero.
The tower itself feels deeply wrong from the start:

Then they meet Shaula, one of the weirdest and most memorable characters in the series. She instantly mistakes Subaru for Flugel, which already hints that Subaru’s connection to the world is far more suspicious than we thought.
That mystery hangs over the entire arc.
The Exact Moment Subaru Stops Being Himself
What makes the memory loss scene terrifying is how suddenly it happens.
Subaru enters the Taygeta Library and interacts with the infamous “Books of the Dead.” These books contain the complete memories of dead people, almost like soul recordings stored inside the tower.
Shortly afterward, Subaru wakes up completely broken mentally.
- He doesn’t recognize Emilia.
- He fears Beatrice.
- He sees Julius as a threat.
And the scariest part? His personality reverts back to the insecure shut-in teenager from Japan.
That detail matters a lot. Arc 6 basically proves that Subaru’s development was real growth earned through suffering. Once those memories disappear, the confident version of Subaru disappears too.
As a reader, this felt brutal because we had spent years watching him slowly become stronger emotionally.
Then suddenly all of it was gone.
Louis Arneb Is One of Re:Zero’s Most Disturbing Villains
The true reason behind Subaru’s amnesia is Louis Arneb, one of the three Sin Archbishops representing Gluttony.
Unlike her brothers, Louis exists inside the metaphysical “Hall of Memories,” a place connected to souls, death, and reincarnation. She can consume memories, identities, and experiences, but she cannot truly live her own life.
That’s what makes her obsession with Subaru so fascinating.
She discovers that Subaru possesses Return by Death, an ability that essentially lets him retry life infinitely. From Louis’ perspective, Subaru has the ultimate power: endless chances at happiness.
But Louis completely misunderstands what Return by Death actually is.
She sees the resets as a blessing.
Anime fans know it’s basically psychological torture disguised as a superpower.
Why Subaru’s Life Terrified Louis
This is probably my favorite twist in Arc 6.
Louis invades Subaru’s memories hoping to steal his ability and experience his life herself. Instead, she ends up experiencing the raw horror behind every loop.
And suddenly everything changes.
Instead of finding a lucky protagonist living a fantasy adventure, she experiences:

The fandom started calling the memory-loss version of Subaru “Amnesiabar,” and that version of him is genuinely depressing.
Without his memories, Subaru sees himself exactly how he used to before being summoned:

- completely unworthy of respect
Now imagine waking up surrounded by legendary people who trust you completely.
Emilia believes in him.

Reading His Own Book Was One of the Best Moments in Re:Zero
The climax of the memory-loss storyline is incredible because it isn’t solved through brute force.
Subaru eventually reads his own Book of the Dead.
That scene works so well because Subaru is finally forced to confront himself objectively. He sees:

- his selfishness
- his cringe moments
- his fear
- but also his courage
For the first time, Subaru fully accepts that both versions of himself are real. The cowardly shut-in from Japan and the hero who saves people are not separate individuals.
They are the same person.
That realization is what restores him.

Not friendship speeches.
Self-acceptance.
And that’s why Arc 6 is still considered one of the strongest arcs in the entire series by many fans.

Re:Zero used it to completely dissect its protagonist psychologically.
