Can Reinhard van Astrea Cross the Augria Sand Dunes in Re:ZERO?

If there’s one thing every Re:ZERO fan eventually realizes, it’s that the series loves impossible situations. Tappei Nagatsuki constantly throws Subaru into places where survival feels mathematically impossible. And honestly, few locations in the entire series feel more hopeless than the Augria Sand Dunes near the legendary Pleiades Watchtower.

The dunes are basically the world’s version of a death zone. Endless Witch Beasts, mind-breaking miasma, distorted space, and Shaula sniping people from miles away — it’s the kind of place where even elite characters would rather turn around and go home.

But then there’s Reinhard van Astrea.

And the funny thing is… Reinhard completely breaks the entire concept of the dunes.

As someone who genuinely loves Re:ZERO, I’ve always found this matchup hilarious because the Augria Sand Dunes are written to feel unbeatable for normal characters, while Reinhard exists almost like a parody of power scaling inside the series. The dunes test intelligence, endurance, teamwork, and strategy. Reinhard ignores all of that and simply walks forward.

Why the Augria Sand Dunes Are So Dangerous

Before talking about Reinhard, it’s important to understand why the dunes are feared in the first place.

The area surrounding the Pleiades Watchtower isn’t just a desert. It’s basically a gigantic magical defense system created centuries ago.

The biggest dangers include:

  • Spatial distortion
  • Heavy Witch miasma
  • Infinite navigation loops
  • Massive Witch Beast hordes
  • Shaula’s long-range sniper attacks

Most travelers never even get close to the tower itself. They either lose their minds, get eaten alive, or wander endlessly until they die from exhaustion.

What makes the dunes terrifying is that they attack both the body and the mind simultaneously.

Subaru’s group in Arc 6 only survived because of repeated trial-and-error, teamwork, and a ridiculous amount of suffering. In typical Re:ZERO fashion, the journey felt more psychological than physical.

Reinhard, however, is a completely different category of existence.

Reinhard Is Basically the World’s Favorite Child

One of the reasons Reinhard feels so absurd is because his powers aren’t “normal anime strong.”

The world itself actively supports him.

Through his countless Divine Protections, Reinhard can adapt to almost any situation instantly. And unlike other characters, he can gain new protections whenever necessary.

That alone changes everything.

Instead of asking:

“Can Reinhard survive this?”

The real question becomes:

“Does the world allow this obstacle to affect Reinhard at all?”

And usually, the answer is no.

The Miasma Wouldn’t Stop Him

For ordinary people, the Witch’s miasma is horrifying. It causes fear, hallucinations, mental instability, and sensory confusion.

Inside the Augria Sand Dunes, it becomes even worse because the environment itself starts deceiving travelers.

But Reinhard has multiple blessings that protect his mind and senses.

Honestly, I don’t even think the miasma would inconvenience him for more than a few seconds.

If the dunes tried to distort his perception or trap him in loops, Reinhard would probably just gain a Divine Protection that lets him see the correct path automatically. That’s the terrifying part about his character — the rules bend around him.

And unlike Subaru, Reinhard wouldn’t need to “solve” the dunes.

He would bypass the mechanic entirely.

Witch Beasts Become a Joke Against Reinhard

One thing Arc 6 does really well is showing how overwhelming the Witch Beasts are in the desert.

The Hungry Horse King alone feels like a disaster-level monster. Add endless swarms fueled by miasma, and most armies would get wiped out eventually.

Reinhard, though, has never really struggled with stamina or large-scale combat.

Against the Witch Beasts, Reinhard has:

ThreatReinhard’s Response
Endless monster swarmsMassive area attacks
Miasma-enhanced creaturesMana absorption weakens them
Exhaustion over timeEssentially infinite stamina
Physical overwhelmSuperior speed and reflexes

This is where the power gap becomes ridiculous.

Characters in Re:ZERO normally fight carefully because the world is extremely punishing. Reinhard fights like he accidentally wandered in from a different anime universe.

The dunes are supposed to grind invaders down slowly.

Reinhard doesn’t get worn down.

Shaula’s Hell’s Snipe Is Completely Countered

Now this is the part most fans bring up first.

Shaula’s Hell’s Snipe is terrifying. In Arc 6, it instantly establishes the Watchtower as a near-unreachable location because she can fire devastating light-speed attacks from absurd distances.

Against normal characters, it’s basically unavoidable death.

Against Reinhard?

It’s almost useless.

The biggest reason is his famous Divine Protection of Arrow Evasion.

This ability is honestly one of the most broken defensive powers in the series because Reinhard doesn’t merely dodge projectiles — projectiles miss him automatically.

That distinction matters.

The universe itself alters trajectories so ranged attacks cannot properly hit him.

So even if Shaula fires nonstop beams across the desert, the likely result is just explosions going off everywhere except where Reinhard is standing.

And if somehow something actually killed him?

He revives.

That’s another reason discussions about Reinhard eventually become unfair. The series gives him layers upon layers of protection that stack together almost infinitely.

The Biggest Difference Between Subaru and Reinhard

What makes this comparison interesting isn’t just power scaling.

It’s storytelling.

Subaru’s journey through the dunes works because he’s weak. He has to understand the rules of the environment. Every victory feels earned through suffering and persistence.

Reinhard removes that tension entirely.

Subaru’s approach:

  • Learn the rules
  • Adapt slowly
  • Depend on allies
  • Die repeatedly
  • Outsmart the obstacle

Reinhard’s approach:

  • Walk forward
  • Ignore the obstacle
  • Arrive at destination

That contrast is actually one of my favorite things about Re:ZERO. Reinhard exists almost as proof that raw power alone doesn’t make someone the protagonist of the story.

Because realistically, if Reinhard handled every crisis himself, most arcs would end in five minutes.

Could Anything in the Dunes Actually Stop Him?

Personally, I don’t think so.

The Augria Sand Dunes are terrifying because they prey on weakness, exhaustion, fear, and confusion.

Reinhard barely experiences any of those limitations.

Even the “infinite loop” aspect probably wouldn’t matter because the world constantly adjusts in Reinhard’s favor. If a specific countermeasure was needed, he’d likely obtain it instantly through another Divine Protection.

That’s why most Re:ZERO fans agree this isn’t really a debate.

It’s more of a showcase for how absurd Reinhard truly is.

Final Thoughts

The Augria Sand Dunes are one of the coolest locations in Re:ZERO because they feel ancient, mysterious, and genuinely lethal. Arc 6 turns the desert into a psychological nightmare filled with hidden rules and constant danger.

But Reinhard van Astrea is simply operating on a different level from almost every other character in the series.

The miasma can’t break him.

The Witch Beasts can’t exhaust him.

Shaula’s sniping can’t hit him.

And even death itself isn’t permanent for him.

In the end, Reinhard crossing the Augria Sand Dunes probably wouldn’t feel like an epic survival story. It would feel like watching the strongest character in the world casually ignore one of the setting’s deadliest locations.

And honestly?

That’s exactly why Reinhard is such a fascinating character in Re:ZERO.
