Re:ZERO Season 4 Part 2: Anastasia’s Body and the Echidna Identity Twist Explained
One of the reasons I’ve stuck with Re:ZERO for so many years is that it never settles for simple plot twists. Tappei Nagatsuki loves making us think we understand a mystery before pulling the rug out from under us. Season 4 Part 2 delivers another perfect example of that philosophy with the shocking truth surrounding Anastasia Hoshin and the mysterious being known as Echidna.
When anime-only viewers first hear that Echidna is inside Anastasia’s body, the obvious assumption is almost impossible to avoid:
“Wait… did the Witch of Greed come back?”
Honestly, that was my first reaction too.
But after looking deeper into the lore, rereading several novel chapters, and comparing the anime’s clues, I actually think the real answer is much more interesting than a simple resurrection. Rather than bringing back an old villain, Re:ZERO explores something far more unsettling—what happens when identity itself is divided into separate pieces.
Anastasia Was Never an Ordinary Royal Candidate
Among the Royal Selection candidates, Anastasia has always stood out.
While Emilia, Crusch, Priscilla, and Felt gained attention through noble lineage, strength, or destiny, Anastasia built everything through intelligence and business talent.
Yet behind that confident smile was a secret she carefully hid from almost everyone.
Her mana gate is fundamentally defective.
Unlike normal magic users, Anastasia struggles to absorb mana correctly, making prolonged magic use extremely dangerous. It’s a weakness that existed long before Subaru ever arrived in Lugunica, and it’s also the reason she encountered the mysterious white fox scarf years earlier.
That scarf wasn’t just a magical artifact.
It was alive.
Meet “Scarfdona”
Fans quickly nicknamed the spirit Scarfdona, and honestly it’s one of those community names that perfectly fits.
Unlike Beatrice or Puck, this artificial spirit rarely takes center stage. Instead, she serves as Anastasia’s quiet adviser, strategist, and constant companion.
Over the years, Scarfdona helped Anastasia transform herself from a struggling merchant into the head of one of the world’s most influential trading companies.
Their relationship wasn’t based on a traditional spirit contract.
Instead, it gradually evolved into something much stranger.
A shared existence.
At first, this arrangement looked surprisingly harmless. Scarfdona offered knowledge while Anastasia supplied a place to exist.
Season 4 shows just how dangerous that balance truly became.
The Pristella Disaster Changed Everything
The battle in Priestella wasn’t simply another action arc.
It permanently altered Anastasia’s life.
Forced into repeated magical combat despite her damaged mana gate, Anastasia pushed her body far beyond its limits. Eventually, continuing normally became impossible.
That’s when Scarfdona made a decision that completely changed both of their futures.
Instead of watching Anastasia die, she temporarily assumed control of her body while Anastasia’s consciousness withdrew into a protected dormant state.
The original plan was simple:
- Save Anastasia.
- Stabilize her body.
- Return control later.
Unfortunately, reality wasn’t nearly that forgiving.
Because Anastasia’s condition deteriorated so severely, Scarfdona couldn’t safely leave without risking her host’s life.
By the time the expedition to the Pleiades Watchtower begins, many of “Anastasia’s” conversations are actually being carried out by Scarfdona herself.
Is This Really the Witch of Greed?
Here’s where I think Re:ZERO deserves a lot of credit.
A lesser series probably would have revealed:
“Surprise! The Witch of Greed possessed Anastasia!”
Instead, Nagatsuki chooses a far more layered explanation.
Scarfdona isn’t the original Witch.
But she also isn’t completely unrelated.
She’s essentially an artificial spirit created by Echidna herself.
The original Witch of Greed experimented endlessly with immortality and preserving consciousness.
One of those experiments involved producing artificial spirits modeled after aspects of her own personality.
However, those spirits weren’t allowed to keep the Witch’s memories.
That detail changes everything.
Scarfdona inherited:
- Her creator’s intelligence.
- Analytical thinking.
- Curiosity.
- Conversational style.
But not centuries of memories, magical research, or personal experiences.
In other words, she resembles Echidna without actually being Echidna.
Why This Twist Works So Well
What impressed me most is that Re:ZERO refuses to treat identity as something simple.
If someone has another person’s personality but none of their memories, are they still the same individual?
That’s basically the philosophical question hiding underneath this storyline.
Scarfdona isn’t pretending.
She genuinely believes herself to be her own person.
At the same time, her existence constantly reminds everyone—including the audience—that she originated from one of history’s most dangerous witches.
That creates an incredible amount of emotional tension.
The Different “Echidnas”
One thing that often confuses newer fans is that several different versions of Echidna exist throughout the broader story.

The Watchtower Scene Hit Harder Than I Expected
Without exaggeration, one of Season 4 Part 2’s most disturbing sequences happens during the fighting inside the Watchtower.
When Anastasia’s body suffers catastrophic damage, Scarfdona reaches her psychological limit.
Rather than continuing to shield Anastasia from overwhelming pain, she instinctively forces Anastasia’s consciousness back into control.
For only a brief moment, viewers witness something heartbreaking.
The real Anastasia returns.
Not during a peaceful conversation.
Not after recovery.
But in the middle of unbearable suffering.
It’s one of those scenes that becomes even stronger after understanding what actually happened.
The anime doesn’t loudly explain everything.
Instead, it trusts viewers to notice subtle behavioral changes, speech differences, and emotional reactions.
Personally, I wish more series respected their audience that much.

Why Fans Can’t Stop Talking About This
After watching the latest episodes, I completely understand why Reddit discussions exploded.
This reveal isn’t shocking simply because another character gets possessed.
It’s memorable because it completely changes how we interpret years of previous interactions.
Looking back, countless conversations weren’t actually Anastasia speaking.
Yet Scarfdona wasn’t deceiving everyone out of malice either.
She was trying to keep Anastasia alive.
That moral ambiguity is classic Re:ZERO.
- Almost nobody is entirely innocent.
- Almost nobody is entirely evil.
- Everyone makes impossible decisions with incomplete information.
That’s exactly why these characters feel so believable.
Final Thoughts
For me, the Anastasia and Scarfdona storyline is one of the strongest pieces of world-building Re:ZERO has introduced since the Sanctuary Arc.
It expands the mythology surrounding Echidna without reducing everything to a predictable “the villain has returned” reveal. Instead, it asks uncomfortable questions about memory, identity, sacrifice, and whether a person can truly escape the intentions of their creator.
As Season 4 Part 2 continues, I’m far more interested in Scarfdona’s future than I am in another large-scale battle. If the various remnants connected to the Witch of Greed continue moving toward one another, it’s hard not to wonder whether this fragmented legacy is building toward something much larger than the Royal Selection itself.
Whether that eventually leads to the rebirth of a complete Echidna or proves that each fragment has become its own independent person, one thing is certain: Anastasia’s story is no longer just about politics or commerce. It’s now deeply tied to one of Re:ZERO’s oldest mysteries, and I can’t wait to see where Nagatsuki takes it next.
