The Hitogami Prophecy: Why the Man-God Fears Rudeus’ Children in Mushoku Tensei

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is filled with incredible world-building, complex characters, and one of the most unsettling antagonists in modern anime: Hitogami, the so-called Man-God. At first glance, he seems almost comedic — a strange being who appears in dreams, casually giving advice to Rudeus Greyrat. But the deeper the story goes, the clearer it becomes: Hitogami is not a guide… he’s a manipulator terrified of the future.

As a long-time anime fan, I think this twist is one of the most fascinating narrative turns in the series. What begins as a mysterious helper slowly evolves into a cosmic chess match between fate, prophecy, and the Greyrat family.

Let’s break down why Hitogami fears Rudeus’ descendants — and why their existence could eventually lead to his downfall.

Hitogami: The Man Who Knows the Future

Hitogami lives in the mysterious Barren World, a strange white void where he communicates with people through dreams. His greatest power is a form of future sight, often compared to a Demon Eye that can observe possible timelines.

But here’s the terrifying part:

Hitogami has already seen his own defeat.

In the future he witnessed, the legendary Dragon God Orsted manages to seal him away. However, Orsted does not accomplish this alone. The vision reveals that Rudeus Greyrat’s descendants play a crucial role in the final battle.

For someone whose entire existence revolves around manipulating fate, that future becomes a nightmare.

Why the Greyrat Family Is So Dangerous to Hitogami

The threat isn’t just Rudeus himself. It’s the entire Greyrat bloodline.

Two factors make them incredibly dangerous to the Man-God.

1. Immunity to Orsted’s Curse

One of the most interesting mechanics in Mushoku Tensei is Orsted’s curse.

Normally, every living being instinctively fears and hates Orsted when they see him. This makes it nearly impossible for him to build alliances.

But Rudeus — and later his children — are immune to this curse.

That means they can:

  • Speak to Orsted normally
  • Work alongside him without fear
  • Support him in battles others would never dare join

From Hitogami’s perspective, this creates the perfect ally for his greatest enemy.

2. A “Strong Fate” That Can’t Be Manipulated

Another key concept in the series is fate strength.

Hitogami normally controls events by guiding people along predictable paths. Most individuals have relatively weak destinies that can be nudged in different directions.

But some characters possess extremely strong fates.

Rudeus is one of them.

And apparently, his children inherit that same trait.

This means:

  • Hitogami’s predictions become less reliable
  • His manipulations stop working
  • The future becomes unstable

For someone who relies entirely on controlling outcomes, that unpredictability is terrifying.

Lara Greyrat: The Child Hitogami Fears the Most

Among Rudeus’ six children, one stands out above the rest.

Lara Greyrat, the daughter of Rudeus and Roxy Migurdia.

Within the lore and community discussions, Lara is often described as a future savior figure, particularly connected to the Migurd tribe.

Her importance becomes clearer when looking at future visions.

According to future glimpses, Lara eventually joins forces with Orsted and another mysterious ally to reach the realm where Hitogami resides.

And that is exactly the scenario the Man-God is trying to prevent.

Hitogami’s Darkest Plan: The Oldeus Timeline

One of the most tragic elements of the story involves an alternate timeline known among fans as the Oldeus timeline.

In that version of events, Hitogami successfully manipulates Rudeus.

His plan is simple but horrifying.

He tricks Rudeus into bringing a disease-carrying rat into his home, which eventually infects Roxy, who is pregnant with Lara.

The result:

  • Roxy dies
  • Lara is never born
  • Rudeus falls into despair and vengeance

The once hopeful protagonist becomes Oldeus, a bitter and broken version of himself.

But even this timeline doesn’t end the way Hitogami expects.

Before dying, Oldeus uses forbidden time-travel magic to send a diary to his past self, warning him about the Man-God’s manipulation.

That diary changes everything.

The Hitogami Prophecy: Why the Man-God Fears Rudeus’ Children in Mushoku Tensei

Rudeus Breaks the Cycle

Armed with knowledge from the future, Rudeus finally begins to understand the truth about Hitogami.

Instead of blindly trusting the dream advice, he starts questioning everything.

This is one of my favorite developments in Mushoku Tensei because it shows Rudeus growing beyond manipulation.

He learns to:

  • Analyze Hitogami’s motives
  • Protect his family from hidden threats
  • Work alongside Orsted rather than against him

By doing so, he prevents the tragedy of the Oldeus timeline.

Most importantly:

Lara is born.

And with her birth, Hitogami’s worst fear returns.

The Future War Against the Man-God

Interestingly, the main story of Mushoku Tensei does not actually show the final battle against Hitogami.

Rudeus eventually dies peacefully at age 74, surrounded by family.

But by that point, he has already accomplished something critical.

He built the foundation of an alliance.

His children grow up in a world where:

  • Orsted has allies
  • Hitogami’s influence is understood
  • The Greyrat family stands ready to oppose him

In other words, the real heroes of the final conflict might not be Rudeus himself — but the next generation.

Final Thoughts

What makes Hitogami such a compelling villain isn’t just his power — it’s his fear.

Despite being a godlike entity with knowledge of the future, he is constantly trying to avoid the one timeline where he loses.

And ironically, the more he interferes, the closer that future seems to come.

For me, that’s one of the most fascinating themes in Mushoku Tensei: the idea that fate can be challenged, even by someone who claims to control it.

Rudeus may not be the one who defeats Hitogami.

But thanks to him, the people who can defeat him will eventually exist.

And somewhere in the white void of the Barren World, the Man-God is still waiting… wondering which day the Greyrat descendants will finally arrive.
