It is the kind of show where one episode can make you laugh at Yani’s terrible decisions and then immediately make you wonder whether you should be concerned about her.
Naturally, the question everyone is asking now is simple:

As of August 2026, there is still no official renewal announcement. But that does not necessarily mean we should start preparing for Yani’s permanent retirement.
In fact, I think a second season is more likely than not.
Has Chainsmoker Cat Season 2 Been Confirmed?

Chainsmoker Cat Season 2 has not officially been confirmed as of August 2026.
There has been no formal greenlight announcement from Bibury Animation Studios, Kodansha, or Netflix. Since the anime only began airing on July 2, 2026, this is hardly surprising.
Anime production committees rarely rush to announce another season while the first one is still airing. They have to look at streaming performance, physical sales, merchandise, manga sales, international popularity, and the overall financial performance of the project.
So, for now, there is no official Season 2 release date.
But I would not interpret the silence as bad news.
A show like Chainsmoker Cat needs time to demonstrate whether its weird little brand of comedy can actually make money. Netflix numbers will be particularly important because the series has a global audience that extends well beyond Japan.
Why I Think Season 2 Is Probably Happening
There are three major reasons I am optimistic about the future of Chainsmoker Cat.

Chainsmoker Cat is weird enough that people feel compelled to tell other people about it.
You either watch Episode 1 and think, “What on earth am I watching?”, or you immediately start recommending it to someone because you need another person to experience the chaos.
That is exactly the sort of reaction that can turn an ordinary seasonal anime into a cult favorite.
The opening theme “Nanmonee” by Wasureranneyo has also received attention thanks to its cinematic visual references and memorable presentation. The opening itself has become part of the conversation rather than something viewers simply skip.
And when an anime gets people discussing individual scenes, songs, animation choices, and characters outside the actual episodes, that is usually a good thing.
My Chainsmoker Cat Season 2 Release Date Prediction
Here is where I would be a little more conservative.
Even if Season 2 gets announced relatively quickly, I would not expect it in 2027.
Bibury Animation Studios has a reputation for producing visually polished anime, and Chainsmoker Cat is not exactly the kind of production that looks like it can be thrown together in six months.
A 12-episode sequel would likely require substantial pre-production, storyboarding, animation, voice work, compositing, editing, and other production stages.

This is where manga readers have something to look forward to, while anime-only viewers should probably stop reading too deeply if they want to remain spoiler-free.
The basic formula of the series is unlikely to change.
Yani will continue attempting to survive her miserable daily existence while making almost every possible decision worse.
We can expect more of:
- Yani’s disastrous attempts at finding work.
- Her ongoing financial problems.
- More dysfunctional family interactions.
- Increasingly ridiculous encounters with the people around her.
- More eccentric catgirls and human characters.
- Elaborate schemes connected to her smoking habit.
- More absurd visual comedy and cinematic references.
One thing I particularly enjoy about the series is that underneath all the filthy jokes and deliberately unpleasant situations, there is actually a surprisingly human character at the center.
Yani is a mess.
But she is our mess.
She constantly screws things up, yet there are moments when the series reminds you that she is not simply a punchline. Her relationships with characters such as Imoko and the landlord give the comedy a little emotional weight.
That balance is one of the reasons I think a second season could be even better than the first.
The Animation Could Be Season 2’s Biggest Challenge
If there is one thing I am slightly worried about, it is production quality.
The first season’s combination of detailed backgrounds, expressive character animation, and cinematic parody is one of its strongest features. The humor would not hit nearly as hard if Yani simply looked like a generic cheaply animated comedy protagonist.
Bibury’s production will therefore have to maintain that standard.
A rushed sequel could easily lose what makes the show special.
Personally, I would rather wait until 2028 for a properly produced Season 2 than get a technically compromised continuation in 2027.
Anime fans have learned this lesson many times already: sometimes waiting is better.
Will Netflix Stream Season 2?
Assuming the series gets renewed, I would be genuinely surprised if Netflix were not involved.
The existing international distribution arrangement gives the platform a strong connection to the franchise, and the global audience is arguably one of Chainsmoker Cat’s biggest advantages.
Fans should therefore expect Season 2 to follow a similar model:
Japan broadcast + international Netflix streaming.
The availability of different broadcast cuts is another matter. Japanese viewers may continue to have access to versions that differ from the international streaming presentation, depending on how the production and licensing arrangements work.
For international fans, however, Netflix is the obvious place to watch.
Final Verdict: Don’t Give Up on Yani Yet

But looking at the bigger picture, I am optimistic.
The manga has plenty of material. The anime has international exposure. The characters have generated genuine fan discussion. The show’s bizarre premise makes it unusually memorable in an increasingly crowded anime market.
And perhaps most importantly, Chainsmoker Cat has something that many seasonal comedies desperately need:
personality.
You may hate Yani’s lifestyle. You may hate her apartment. You may hate the smell coming through the screen. But you probably won’t forget her.
My personal bet is Summer 2028, with Fall 2028 as the backup prediction. If a renewal announcement arrives toward the end of 2026, that timeline would make perfect sense.
Until then, we can only wait, watch the first season, argue about Yani’s increasingly questionable life choices, and hope Bibury starts preparing that sequel.
Because, let’s face it, the anime world has plenty of perfectly respectable protagonists.
We need Yani.
Even if she desperately needs to clean that apartment.
