This isn’t some gigantic overhaul where Puni Puni suddenly becomes a Rent-A-Girlfriend game. Level-5 is treating it as a Mini Collaboration, which is probably the smartest way to handle something this strange.

The event revolves around a special Bingo system. Players will complete missions while playing the usual Puni Puni puzzle stages, gradually filling spaces on their event card. Depending on the objectives, you’ll be asked to clear particular stages, achieve certain conditions, or simply keep playing and matching those adorable little Puni characters.

Complete enough objectives and you’ll earn Date Tickets, which are the important part of this whole operation.

The Date Tickets can be used on a limited-time gacha banner, with Chizuru Mizuhara as the headline prize. That means this isn’t simply a cosmetic cameo. If you’re a collector, you’ll have an actual reason to grind the event rather than logging in once, looking at Chizuru standing next to Jibanyan, and closing the app in disbelief.

Chizuru Mizuhara Is Somehow a Puni Puni Character Now

If Level-5 had simply dropped a silent Chizuru sprite into the game, this would have felt like a cheap promotional skin. Giving her dedicated voice lines makes the whole thing considerably more appealing to Rent-A-Girlfriend fans.

There also appears to be more going on with her than just collecting another character. Chizuru is expected to have a unique tribe-related ability, including a passive associated with Tribe Unity that can improve the stats of compatible teammates.

For serious Puni Puni players, that’s the detail I would pay attention to. A crossover character being cute is one thing. A crossover character actually having a useful place in high-level teams is much more interesting.

But that’s also why I’m more interested in this event than I would be in another predictable crossover. Puni Puni has already survived for years on the strength of its Japanese audience, and at this point, throwing Chizuru into the game feels less like an attempt at maintaining the original Yo-Kai Watch identity and more like Level-5 acknowledging exactly who is still playing.

The Real Reason Behind the Crossover

There’s a bigger business story hiding underneath the memes.

The western version of the mobile game, Yo-Kai Watch: Wibble Wobble, shut down internationally years ago, while the Japanese Puni Puni version has continued operating since 2015. That’s a remarkable lifespan for a mobile title, especially one attached to a franchise whose international momentum has faded considerably compared with its peak.

The original kids who discovered Yo-Kai Watch during its Nintendo 3DS era aren’t kids anymore. They’re teenagers and young adults now, and some have grown into exactly the kind of anime and gacha audience that Rent-A-Girlfriend targets.

That makes the collaboration suddenly look much less ridiculous from a marketing perspective.

Level-5 isn’t necessarily trying to convince a seven-year-old to become a Rent-A-Girlfriend fan. It may be doing something much simpler: giving older Yo-Kai Watch fans a reason to open Puni Puni again.

Her Tribe Unity-style support ability is the detail that could make this collaboration more than a novelty. If she provides meaningful statistical boosts to strong teams, experienced players may have a genuine gameplay incentive to spend their Date Tickets rather than treating the event as a collection exercise.

The obvious problem is the gacha system.

You can grind Bingo missions, earn Date Tickets, and throw those tickets into the collaboration banner, but RNG is still RNG. There is nothing quite like completing a bunch of event objectives only to receive everything except the character you actually wanted.

So my advice is simple: don’t assume that grinding automatically guarantees Chizuru. Go into the event knowing exactly what the banner offers and how many resources you can realistically collect.

What This Says About Yo-Kai Watch

This collaboration leaves me with mixed feelings about the future of Yo-Kai Watch.

On one hand, I’m genuinely happy that Puni Puni is still alive. A decade-old mobile game continuing to receive crossover content is impressive, and events like this help keep the game financially relevant. If collaborations keep bringing players back, there’s a stronger reason for Level-5 to continue supporting the game.

But there’s also something bittersweet about seeing where the franchise is today.

Yo-Kai Watch once looked like it could become one of Japan’s biggest multimedia franchises. Now, some international fans are still waiting for meaningful localization support while the Japanese mobile game keeps experimenting with increasingly unexpected collaborations. Seeing Chizuru standing beside Yo-Kai characters is hilarious, but it also reminds me how much the franchise has changed.

Still, I’m not going to complain too loudly. If this bizarre crossover keeps Puni Puni alive and gives longtime fans something ridiculous to talk about, I’ll take it.
