Chapter 99 Starts Almost Too Peacefully
One thing I love about Witch Hat Atelier is how Shirahama can make an ordinary scene feel incredibly important.
The group is in a crowded marketplace while preparing for their journey south toward the Dragon Isles. There is a surprisingly relaxed atmosphere at first. The apprentices are surrounded by unfamiliar goods, food, and souvenirs, and for a moment they almost look like ordinary kids enjoying a trip.
Almost.
Agott quietly separates from everyone else because she wants to purchase Dragon Ointment, a local medicine made using dragon saliva, oil, and beeswax.
The important part isn’t really the ointment itself.
It’s why Agott wants it.
She intends to use it on Coco’s cheek.
That small decision says more about Agott’s development than another dramatic speech ever could. She has always been one of the more emotionally guarded members of the group. She can be proud, blunt, competitive, and sometimes downright difficult.
But she cares.
She just isn’t very good at saying it.
So instead of telling Coco how worried she is, Agott quietly buys something that might help heal her friend’s injury.
For me, this is one of those tiny Witch Hat Atelier moments that deserves more attention than it initially gets.
Then Everything Goes Horribly Wrong
The marketplace suddenly becomes dangerous.
Agott finds herself trapped in the crowd, and the merchant connected to the ointment grabs her wrist. What follows is genuinely disturbing because it isn’t presented like some exaggerated magical battle.
It feels real.
Agott panics.
She screams for him to let go, and suddenly all the warmth of the marketplace disappears.
Jujy’s quick thinking helps create an opening, while a mysterious dark-skinned swordswoman intervenes with astonishing physical speed.
This character immediately stands out.
She doesn’t fight like a witch. She doesn’t rely on elaborate magical techniques. She uses a sword, movement, timing, and raw physical ability.
That matters.
Qifrey and Heihart eventually restrain the attacker, but the real introduction has already happened.
The swordswoman has caught everyone’s attention.
And eventually, she catches Qifrey’s.
Agott’s Reaction Is Just as Important
After the incident, the emotional fallout is surprisingly powerful.
Agott is shaken and apologizes for wandering away. Coco, instead of blaming her, immediately comforts her.
That scene works because neither character is behaving perfectly.
Agott feels guilty.
Coco feels guilty too.
They both believe they could have prevented what happened.
That’s something Witch Hat Atelier does exceptionally well. The danger isn’t simply used as an excuse for an action scene. Shirahama allows the characters to process what happened emotionally.
Qifrey then gives Agott a serious warning.
Being outside a witch settlement means being exposed to dangers that have nothing to do with the Brimmed Hats. Not everyone who approaches a witch has magical intentions. Not every threat can be solved with a spell.
And honestly, that may be the larger point of Chapter 99.
The world is bigger and uglier than the apprentices have been taught to believe.
The Final Pages Change Everything
Then comes the scene everyone is going to talk about.
The swordswoman is speaking with Heihart after helping the group. She casually comments that witches can become too dependent on magic and therefore fail to notice more ordinary dangers.
It is a surprisingly sharp criticism.
And I actually think she’s right.
Witches in this world possess extraordinary abilities, but that can create a blind spot. If you grow up believing magic can solve almost anything, you may underestimate a person who doesn’t play by magical rules.
But then Qifrey sees her.
His expression changes.
The atmosphere changes.
And suddenly, the entire chapter feels different.
Qifrey recognizes her.
Renerain.
She, in turn, appears to recognize him as Qifrey.
That’s an absolutely brutal cliffhanger.
Because Qifrey’s past has always been one of the biggest unanswered questions in Witch Hat Atelier.
Why Renerain Could Be So Important
Here’s where Chapter 100 gets really interesting.
We already know that Qifrey’s memories surrounding his childhood and the Brimmed Hats are deeply complicated. His missing eye is only the most visible reminder of the tragedy that shaped his life.
What we don’t know is how much of that past he actually remembers correctly.
That’s where Renerain could become extremely dangerous to the story’s existing status quo.
If she knew Qifrey when he was younger, she might possess information that Qifrey himself no longer has.
And if that’s true, she could potentially tell him something that completely changes his understanding of the Brimmed Hats.
That’s not just another lore reveal.
That could rewrite Qifrey’s entire motivation.
My biggest possibilities for Chapter 100 are:
- Renerain knew Qifrey before the tragedy involving his eye.
- She may have witnessed events that were erased or altered in Qifrey’s memories.
- She could know something about his family, village, or early training.
- Her knowledge of the southern regions may connect to another side of the magical world.
- Her attitude toward witches could create immediate tension with Qifrey and the apprentices.
I don’t necessarily expect Shirahama to dump the entire backstory into Chapter 100, though.
In fact, I hope she doesn’t.
The series is much better when it gives us pieces of information and makes us sit with them.
Renerain Could Challenge Coco and Agott’s View of Magic
The physical differences between Renerain and the witches are also fascinating.
She carries a sword.
She fights without depending on magic.
She survives through awareness and physical skill.
Meanwhile, Coco and the others have been trained inside a society where magic is at the center of almost everything.
That contrast could become incredibly useful.
Imagine Agott being forced to acknowledge that someone without traditional magical training can be more alert and effective in a dangerous situation than an experienced witch.
That would hit her pride hard.
And Coco might have an even more interesting reaction.
Coco has always been fascinated by magic, but she’s also one of the characters most aware of its consequences. Meeting Renerain could reinforce the idea that magic isn’t automatically the most powerful answer.
Sometimes the smartest thing to do is simply pay attention.
And Then There’s the Dragon Ointment
I’m also hoping Chapter 100 doesn’t completely abandon the emotional thread with Agott and Coco.
Because after everything that happened, Agott still hasn’t properly given Coco the ointment.
That little gift could become a beautiful moment.
Imagine Agott awkwardly handing it over and trying to explain that she bought it because Coco’s cheek was still bothering her.
Coco would probably understand immediately.
There wouldn’t need to be some giant emotional confession.
That’s another thing Shirahama gets right.
The strongest relationships in Witch Hat Atelier are often built through small gestures rather than dramatic declarations.
Agott buying medicine for Coco is one of those gestures.
And after the kidnapping attempt, it carries even more emotional weight.

That would be enough.

I honestly didn’t expect a chapter that starts with shopping for medicine to end with one of the biggest Qifrey cliffhangers we’ve had in a long time.
That’s classic Witch Hat Atelier.
The series can make a tiny act of kindness feel important, turn a crowded market into a genuinely frightening place, and then casually introduce a character who might hold the key to the protagonist’s buried past.
Renerain is the big question heading into Chapter 100.
Who is she to Qifrey?
What does she remember?
Why does she recognize him?
And, perhaps most importantly, what happened to Qifrey before the story we thought we knew began?
Those questions are far more exciting to me than simply wondering what the next big magical battle will be.
If Shirahama uses Chapter 100 to crack open Qifrey’s history even slightly, this milestone chapter could become one of the major turning points of the entire manga.
And after Chapter 99’s final page?
I’m absolutely ready for it.
