It’s the fact that he spent years operating through someone we actually trusted. That is why I think Lucius works better as a final villain than someone who is simply “the strongest guy in the room.” His power set reflects his personality. He wants control, and almost every one of his abilities is another form of control.

His stolen devil powers represent his willingness to take whatever he believes is necessary. And his Paladins demonstrate his belief that humanity itself needs to be rewritten.

That’s much more interesting than simply giving the final villain another gigantic energy attack.

Lucius is terrifying because he doesn’t think he’s evil. He thinks he’s the person finally capable of fixing the world.

And that puts Asta and the other Magic Knights in an especially difficult position. They aren’t merely fighting an enemy who wants to destroy everything. They’re fighting someone who believes that free will, individuality, and human imperfection are problems that need to be eliminated.

Considering how far Lucius has pushed Soul Magic, Time Magic, devil power, and the abilities stolen from the Zogratis family, defeating him was never going to be a simple matter of becoming stronger.

That, ultimately, is why Lucius feels like the right kind of threat for Black Clover’s final battle. He’s not just another powerful mage waiting for the heroes to surpass him. He’s a villain whose entire magical arsenal is built around one terrifying idea: if he controls the future, the soul, and the body, then what part of humanity is actually left to fight back?
