I honestly didn’t think we would ever get to this point. Black Clover fans have spent years talking about the anime’s return, arguing over when Studio Pierrot would finally bring Asta, Yuno, Liebe, and the rest of the Clover Kingdom back to television. Now that Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1 is finally approaching, it feels strangely surreal. The premiere, titled “War Begins,” is scheduled for October 3, 2026, and everything about the new material suggests that this is not simply a continuation of the old weekly anime.
For longtime fans, the biggest change is immediately obvious: Black Clover is returning with a seasonal production model rather than the relentless weekly schedule that carried the original anime through 170 episodes. That difference matters. The original series had some fantastic animation peaks, especially during major fights, but its production schedule could also be brutal. This time, Studio Pierrot has had more room to work with, and the early preview material gives the impression that the team wants the Spade Kingdom Raid to look as important as it actually is.

There has already been an early world premiere for some fans at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, creating plenty of discussion across anime communities and social media. That early screening naturally pushed expectations through the roof, particularly among people who have been waiting since the original broadcast stopped in 2021. After such a long break, the new season has to do more than simply show up. It has to remind people why Black Clover became such a huge part of the modern shonen conversation in the first place.
And personally, I think starting with the Spade Kingdom Raid is exactly what the anime needs. There is no reason to waste time pretending that this is a soft reboot or a slow introduction. The story stopped at one of its biggest turning points, and Episode 171 throws us directly back into the crisis.
Where Black Clover Season 2 Begins
The original anime ended with the Clover and Heart Kingdoms facing a disaster that was far beyond another ordinary Magic Knight mission. The Dark Triad of the Spade Kingdom had launched their attack, and their devil-powered abilities immediately established them as some of the most dangerous enemies Asta and his friends had ever faced.
Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance were captured, and their importance goes far beyond simply being two powerful captains. The Dark Triad needs them for the ritual connected to the Tree of Qliphoth, which could open the gates of the underworld and unleash an entirely new level of danger.
That means the heroes aren’t dealing with a comfortable rescue mission where they can spend weeks planning every move. The clock is ticking. The surviving Magic Knights have to prepare an assault against the Spade Kingdom before the enemy completes its ritual, and Episode 1 is essentially the moment when preparation finally turns into war.

Asta and Liebe Finally Push Toward Devil Union
The part of the premiere I’m personally most interested in is obviously Asta and Liebe.
Their relationship has changed dramatically. Liebe isn’t simply a devil that Asta happens to control anymore. Their connection is based on trust, mutual respect, and the strange brotherhood that has become one of the most interesting emotional elements in the series.
But friendship doesn’t automatically make Devil Union easy.
Asta and Liebe have to learn how to synchronize their powers properly, and Nacht is absolutely not going to make that process comfortable. His training methods are harsh because the enemies waiting for them aren’t going to give Asta any second chances. Dante, Zenon, and Vanica are operating on another level, and ordinary anti-magic techniques aren’t enough to guarantee victory.
The episode apparently spends considerable time showing Asta and Liebe failing to maintain their synchronization. Their energies don’t immediately work together perfectly, and that is actually something I like about the setup. Asta has always been the character who screams, gets knocked down, gets back up, and somehow pushes through the wall in front of him. But Devil Union gives that familiar idea a different shape because now he literally has to learn how to fight as one with another person.
And then comes the moment everybody has been waiting for.
Asta and Liebe finally manage to activate Devil Union, although they can only maintain the transformation for an extremely short period. It isn’t presented as a magical button that suddenly solves every problem. Instead, it feels like a glimpse of something much bigger.
That is exactly how I wanted this power-up handled. Give us the visual impact, show us what Asta could become, and then make him earn the ability to actually control it.
Yuno Has His Own War to Fight
It would be easy for Asta’s Devil Union training to dominate the entire discussion, but Yuno’s storyline is just as important.
The Golden Dawn suffered devastating losses during Zenon’s attack, and Yuno has every reason to carry that trauma into the next battle. William Vangeance’s capture also gives Yuno a deeply personal reason to fight. This isn’t simply another rivalry between Asta and Yuno to see who can become stronger. The Spade Kingdom has taken people they care about, and both characters are stepping into a war where failure has consequences.
Yuno trains alongside Langris Vaude, and I really like this pairing because their personalities and combat styles create an interesting contrast. Yuno’s Wind Magic and Sylph give him enormous versatility, while Langris’ Spatial Magic is aggressive and unpredictable. Training against someone like that forces Yuno to react instead of relying purely on raw magical power.
The preview material suggests that Yuno has become much more refined since we last saw him. He isn’t suddenly a completely different character, but his fighting style has matured. That should make his eventual confrontations with the Spade Kingdom’s strongest warriors much more satisfying.
The Spade Kingdom Raid Is Finally Ready
While Asta and Yuno are training separately, the larger military operation is taking shape.
The upcoming raid brings together powerful Magic Knights from the Clover Kingdom and allies connected to the Heart Kingdom. Characters who were previously separated by political differences or outright hostility now have a common enemy. Even former enemies and complicated allies become part of a much larger effort to stop the Qliphoth ritual.
This is one of the things I enjoy most about the Spade Kingdom storyline. The scale suddenly expands. Earlier arcs could revolve around one dungeon, one kingdom, one tournament, or one specific enemy group. Here, the entire world of Black Clover starts feeling interconnected.
There is also a strong sense that nobody is completely safe. The heroes aren’t marching into Spade Kingdom because they believe they are stronger than everyone waiting there. They’re going because the alternative is potentially catastrophic.
The New Animation Style Could Be the Biggest Upgrade
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: animation quality.
The original Black Clover had some legendary episodes. When the production team was firing on all cylinders, the show could look incredible. At the same time, the weekly schedule meant that consistency was always a challenge. Some episodes looked fantastic while others were clearly fighting against production limitations.
The seasonal format gives Studio Pierrot a different opportunity.
The new preview footage appears to have a more polished visual identity, with stronger character drawings, more controlled action choreography, richer lighting, and greater attention to backgrounds. The influence of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King is also noticeable in the way the newer material approaches large-scale action.
I wouldn’t say that better animation automatically makes an anime better. Black Clover was never successful purely because of visuals. The emotional payoff, character relationships, ridiculous power escalation, comedy, and classic shonen determination are what made people stick around.
But when those ingredients are combined with more time for production, the Spade Kingdom Raid has the potential to look exactly as huge as it feels on the page.
“Kienai Riyuu” Sets the Tone
The return also brings a new opening theme, “Kienai Riyuu” by WANIMA.
That choice makes sense to me. Black Clover has always had a strong relationship with energetic rock music, and WANIMA’s sound fits the series’ combination of youthful determination and chaotic battle energy. Asta screaming about never giving up while guitars are going completely wild in the background is practically part of the franchise’s DNA at this point.
After five years away, the opening also has a bigger job than simply introducing the cast. It needs to communicate that this isn’t just another cour of the old anime. This is the beginning of one of the story’s biggest wars.
Why Episode 1 Matters So Much
The premiere doesn’t need to resolve anything. In fact, it shouldn’t.
Its real job is to establish the emotional and tactical situation before the raid explodes into full-scale combat. Asta needs to understand Devil Union. Yuno needs to sharpen himself. The allied forces need to organize. The captured captains need to remain alive long enough for the rescue operation to matter.
That makes “War Begins” a pretty perfect title.
For me, the most exciting part isn’t even seeing one massive fight. It’s seeing how the characters have changed during the time away. Asta and Liebe have a completely different relationship now. Yuno has been forced to deal with devastating losses. Nacht has become a major figure in Asta’s development. The political situation between kingdoms has also become much more serious.
After all those years, the world of Black Clover finally feels like it is moving toward a massive collision.
My Take on Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1
As a longtime anime fan, I’m more excited by the setup than by the promise of flashy animation alone. We’ve already seen Asta become stronger countless times, so another transformation would mean very little if the emotional story behind it wasn’t there. Thankfully, Devil Union has actual character meaning because it depends on Asta and Liebe trusting each other.
The same goes for Yuno. His next stage isn’t interesting simply because his magic looks cooler. His development matters because the Spade Kingdom attack has personally affected him, his squad, and his relationship with William.
That is why the return feels bigger than a standard anime sequel. Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1 is opening the door to a war that has been waiting for years.
And yes, I’m absolutely ready for it.
The five-year wait has been frustrating, but seeing Asta, Liebe, Yuno, Nacht, and the rest of the cast moving again makes it much easier to forget the gap. If the rest of the season maintains the level suggested by the premiere material, the Spade Kingdom Raid could become one of the most talked-about parts of the Black Clover anime.
Now we finally get to see whether Asta and his anti-magic can survive the war that has been building for so long.
