Okay, KAKAKAKA just went from “really clever manga” to “wait, WHAT?” territory.
I went into Chapter 4 expecting another tense round of Yang Nen trying to survive the increasingly ridiculous world of fraudulent imperial exams. Instead, Mukade Makino basically kicked the door down and introduced Zhu Youjian, the future Chongzhen Emperor, hiding inside an imperial facility and beating the living daylights out of our protagonist.
That is one hell of a way to raise the stakes.
For anyone following KAKAKAKA Chapter 4, this chapter feels like the moment the series finally reveals what kind of story it actually wants to be. The exam fraud is still important, but it suddenly feels like the surface layer of something much bigger involving corruption, espionage, royal succession, and the increasingly dangerous political situation of the late Ming Dynasty.
And honestly? I’m completely hooked.
KAKAKAKA Chapter 4 Recap: Yang Nen Meets the Masked Man
Chapter 4, titled “The Masked Man,” immediately drops us into a restricted imperial archive.
Yang Nen is already operating under a stolen identity, and things get considerably worse when a masked intruder attacks him from behind. This isn’t some nervous bureaucrat with a knife, either. The guy fights like he has been doing this for years.
Yang Nen gets pinned down, knocked around, and generally treated like a human punching bag.
But this is where I love the protagonist.
He isn’t secretly the strongest fighter in the room. He doesn’t suddenly unlock some ridiculous battle-shonen technique. Instead, Yang Nen survives by thinking faster than the person trying to kill him.
He grabs heavy scrolls, uses them as weapons, knocks over an oil lamp, and turns the resulting fire into an opportunity to escape.
It is messy, desperate and extremely satisfying.
Unfortunately, the masked man isn’t finished.
He catches Yang Nen again, disarms him and slams him into the wooden archives. Then comes one of the chapter’s most important revelations: the attacker already knows Yang Nen is lying about his identity.
The Masked Man Has Done His Homework
The interrogation scene might actually be my favorite part of Chapter 4.
The masked man explains that he investigated Yang Nen’s supposed family background. According to the official registration, Yang Nen comes from a farming family in Suzhou.
There is just one problem.
He doesn’t sound like someone from Suzhou.
Yang Nen tries to explain that he was raised in Beijing, but the masked man isn’t buying it. He has apparently gone all the way to Yang Nen’s supposed hometown and discovered that nobody there even recognizes the name.
That’s brutal.
The attacker’s conclusion is basically unavoidable: someone capable of performing at such a high level in the imperial examination system shouldn’t have a completely nonexistent past.
Then comes the accusation:
Yang Nen bought the family registration illegally.
At this point, Yang Nen is bleeding, badly outmatched and seemingly trapped.
And this is exactly where the chapter becomes classic KAKAKAKA.
Yang Nen Turns the Trap Around
While being beaten, Yang Nen notices something strange.
The fire.
The masked man isn’t treating it like a minor inconvenience. He is genuinely frightened of the flames and immediately moves to stamp them out.
Yang Nen connects the dots.
Then he remembers another detail: the masked man admits that he entered the facility hidden inside a wooden cargo crate.
Wait a second.
Why would somebody working for the authorities need to sneak inside?
They wouldn’t.
If this man were simply another agent of Chen or one of the corrupt officials controlling the facility, he could have entered through the proper channels.
That means he is hiding something too.
And suddenly, Yang Nen has leverage.
Instead of continuing the fight, he basically tells the masked man that they should stop pretending this is a normal interrogation. If the attacker kills him, Yang Nen can simply raise the alarm and expose the intruder’s presence.
It’s not strength that saves Yang Nen. It’s mutual vulnerability.
The masked man finally backs down.
“Fine. You win.”
That line hits differently because Yang Nen has just managed to defeat a much more physically capable opponent without actually overpowering him.
The Biggest KAKAKAKA Reveal Yet
Then comes the bombshell.
Yang Nen wants to know who this guy actually is.
The masked man refuses to give him a straight answer and instead tells him to figure it out.
So Yang Nen starts thinking about the political situation surrounding the Tianqi Emperor.
And this is where the manga suddenly expands its scope.
Yang Nen remembers that members of the imperial family have been dying under suspicious circumstances. He also remembers seeing one surviving royal figure surrounded by an enormous entourage.
There is something familiar about his eyes.
The resemblance to the Emperor is impossible to ignore.
Yang Nen finally says the name:
Zhu Youjian, Prince of Xin.
The masked man removes his opera mask.
And yep.
It’s actually him.
That reveal completely changes the context of everything that came before it.
Who Is Zhu Youjian?
For readers who don’t know the history behind the character, Zhu Youjian isn’t some random fictional prince invented for the manga.
He is based on a real historical figure who would eventually become the Chongzhen Emperor, the final emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
That makes his appearance here absolutely wild.
Instead of introducing him as a distant royal figure sitting safely inside the palace, KAKAKAKA presents him as someone willing to personally sneak into dangerous locations, investigate corruption and operate outside normal channels.
He’s basically playing political espionage while wearing an opera mask.
And considering the historical fate of the Ming Dynasty, there is a huge amount of dramatic irony packed into that introduction.

The most interesting part is that Yang Nen and Zhu Youjian are actually more alike than they initially appear.
Both are living behind identities that aren’t completely honest.
Yang Nen is impersonating someone to enter the examination system.
Zhu Youjian is disguising himself to investigate what is happening inside his own empire.
That’s a fantastic setup.
What Does Chapter 5 Mean for Yang Nen?
This is where I’m starting to get really excited about the next chapter.
I don’t think KAKAKAKA is going to abandon the examination plot. Instead, I expect it to connect the exam fraud directly to the larger political conspiracy.
Yang Nen has now demonstrated something incredibly valuable to Zhu Youjian: he can recognize patterns that other people miss.
He figured out the masked man’s vulnerability while half-conscious and being beaten.
That’s exactly the kind of person a desperate political faction would want nearby.
I could easily see Zhu Youjian offering Yang Nen some kind of deal. Not necessarily friendship, and definitely not blind trust. More like:
“Help me, and I won’t expose you.”
That would fit the tone of the manga much better than suddenly turning the two characters into best friends.
Master Wang Could Become Extremely Important
Another detail I don’t want readers to overlook is the search for Master Wang.
The masked man wasn’t simply wandering through the archives looking for entertainment. He was searching for specific information, including records connected to Wang.
That suggests the examination fraud operation may be much larger than Yang Nen originally understood.
The wealthy candidates buying identities, the people arranging false registrations, corrupt officials and the people manipulating examination results could all be pieces of the same machine.
And if Zhu Youjian is investigating that machine, Yang Nen might have accidentally stumbled into something far more dangerous than an illegal exam scheme.
KAKAKAKA Chapter 5 Release Date
Based on the release pattern presented so far, KAKAKAKA Chapter 5 is expected on October 6, 2026.

My Biggest Prediction for Chapter 5
I don’t think the next chapter is going to be another straightforward fight.
The real battle in KAKAKAKA has always been information.
Who knows what?
Who is lying?
Who has access to which records?
Who can expose whom?
Chapter 4 makes that crystal clear.
Yang Nen doesn’t survive because he’s stronger than Zhu Youjian. Zhu Youjian doesn’t reveal himself because he’s suddenly become trustworthy. They both stop fighting because they’ve realized that the other person possesses information that could destroy them.
That’s much more interesting than another power-up.
And now there are two incredibly intelligent, secretive characters standing in the same room, each knowing the other is hiding something.
That’s basically psychological warfare waiting to happen.
Final Thoughts
KAKAKAKA Chapter 4 is the chapter that changed the scale of the entire manga.
What started as a fascinating story about a nameless genius cheating his way through the imperial examination system has now opened the door to a much larger historical thriller involving the Ming court, corruption, secret investigations and the future emperor of China.
The Zhu Youjian reveal isn’t just a cool cameo.
It changes how we should read everything around Yang Nen.
Suddenly, the fake identities, illegal registrations, mysterious ledgers and examination corruption all feel like pieces of a much larger puzzle.
And honestly, I can’t wait to see what happens when Yang Nen realizes that the guy he just blackmailed is going to become the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
If Chapter 4 was the moment KAKAKAKA showed us the bigger game, Chapter 5 could be the moment Yang Nen gets invited to play it.
