Ayaru’s Brush with Romance Chapter 3 is almost here, and I honestly can’t decide whether Ayaru Kagami is about to get his first real romantic moment or suffer the most spectacular third-wheel disaster imaginable. Knowing this manga, it will probably be both.
Hidari Yokoyama’s Ayaru’s Brush with Romance (Ippitsu Ayaru) has already found a surprisingly fun way to mix school comedy, romance, and the serious world of Japanese calligraphy. What initially looks like another awkward high-school rom-com is slowly turning into something much more interesting. Ayaru isn’t simply chasing a crush. He’s also trying to survive the brutally demanding world of Shodo, where even a single brushstroke can expose how much you still have to learn.
Chapter 2 was especially good at showing that balance. It gave Ayaru an important lesson, introduced the basics behind one of calligraphy’s most famous practice characters, and then casually dropped what looks like the setup for a disastrous weekend outing.

The important thing is that Chapter 2 doesn’t really end with Ayaru and Chinzei beginning a cute shopping trip. It ends with Suzuri appearing out of nowhere, which is basically the manga equivalent of someone unplugging the romance machine five seconds before it starts.
What Really Happened at the End of Chapter 2?
The second half of Chapter 2 gives Ayaru a much better understanding of why Suzuri made him repeatedly practice the kanji 永, meaning “eternity.”
Ayaru finally asks the obvious question: why on earth did nobody explain what he was actually practicing?
Suzuri’s response is wonderfully Suzuri. He basically assumes that Ayaru should have known already and treats the explanation as common knowledge. Ayaru, understandably, is furious.
The joke works because the reader gets to learn something genuinely interesting at the same time. The character 永 is closely connected to the Eight Principles of Yong, a traditional way of understanding the fundamental brush movements needed for Japanese calligraphy.
The eight basic movements demonstrated through the character include:

- Horizontal stroke
- Rising stroke
- Left-falling stroke
- Vertical stroke
- Hook
- Short left-falling stroke

For Ayaru, this revelation completely changes how he sees the brutal practice sessions. He had been suffering through repetition without understanding the reason behind it. Once Chinzei and the others explain the purpose, his attitude immediately changes.
That is one of the things I like about Ayaru’s Brush with Romance. The manga can make a joke about something incredibly mundane, then suddenly give you a real glimpse into the discipline behind Shodo. It doesn’t feel like the educational material exists separately from the comedy. The two actually feed each other.
Ayaru’s Brush Is Basically Dead
Then comes another problem.
The club members take a closer look at Ayaru’s brush and realize that it is completely worn out. The bristles are shaggy, damaged, and practically begging for retirement.
And when Ayaru reveals that he’s been using an old cheap brush left over from elementary school, the reaction from the older students says everything.
He has essentially been trying to learn proper calligraphy with a terrible tool.
That makes his progress a little more impressive, honestly. If the brush is already in horrible condition, controlling the thickness and movement of each stroke becomes considerably harder. Ayaru didn’t even realize how much unnecessary difficulty he was creating for himself.
Thankfully, Chinzei has the obvious solution.
Chinzei Invites Ayaru on a “Brush Date”
Chinzei suggests that they go shopping for a proper brush at Kakihara Stationery, a store specializing in calligraphy supplies.
For Chinzei, this is clearly an innocent and helpful suggestion. For Ayaru?
This is a date.
At least, that is what his brain immediately decides.
Ayaru completely loses it internally. The guy goes from talking about buying a brush to imagining the romantic possibilities of spending Saturday with Chinzei. It’s exactly the kind of overreaction you’d expect from someone who has been waiting for even the smallest sign that his crush might become something more.
He rushes home to announce the news, even treating the upcoming trip like a major romantic event. His family and dog get dragged into the excitement, while Ayaru prepares himself for what he believes could be the first proper step in his love life.
What Will Chinzei Wear?
The manga then gives us one of those wonderfully ridiculous Ayaru fantasy sequences.
He’s waiting for Chinzei and starts imagining what she might wear outside school. His imagination goes completely off the rails, cycling through several possible outfits:
- A traditional kimono
- An oversized sporty jersey with the number 67
- A more elegant plaid dress
It’s a small scene, but it says a lot about Ayaru. He isn’t just nervous about meeting Chinzei. He has built the entire situation up in his head before the actual shopping trip has even started.
Which is exactly why the final page hurts so much.
Suzuri Shows Up and Destroys Everything
Ayaru is standing around waiting, nervous and practically vibrating with anticipation.
Then he senses someone behind him.
He turns around.
Suzuri.
The same intimidating upperclassman who has already been driving Ayaru crazy is suddenly standing behind him in casual clothes.
Ayaru’s romantic fantasy instantly catches fire and burns to the ground.
The chapter closes with Ayaru essentially screaming, “SUZURI?! WHY?! WHAT IS HE DOING HERE?!”
And honestly, that’s a fantastic cliffhanger for Chapter 3.
Why Is Suzuri Going to the Shopping Trip?
This is where the speculation gets fun, because the manga hasn’t confirmed the reason yet.
My first guess is that Chinzei invited Suzuri along. She knows he’s one of the most knowledgeable members of the Shodo club, so bringing him to a specialized stationery store would make perfect sense. Ayaru sees a romantic outing. Chinzei probably sees three club members buying equipment.
That difference in expectations could create some excellent comedy.
The other possibility is that Suzuri simply goes to Kakihara Stationery regularly. Someone that obsessed with calligraphy probably has very specific preferences when it comes to brushes, ink, and paper. If he happens to show up at the same store, the whole situation could be nothing more than an unfortunate coincidence from Ayaru’s perspective.
Either way, I don’t expect Suzuri to intentionally sabotage Ayaru’s romantic hopes. That’s what makes the character fun. He seems scary, but his actions so far suggest that he’s genuinely invested in Ayaru improving.
Chapter 3 Could Teach Us More About Shodo Brushes
The stationery-store setting also gives Yokoyama a perfect opportunity to expand the Shodo side of the story.
Ayaru needs a proper brush, but buying one isn’t necessarily as simple as grabbing the most expensive option on the shelf. Different brushes use different types of animal hair and can behave very differently on paper.

And that could be the real point of the shopping trip. Ayaru isn’t simply replacing a ruined elementary-school brush. He’s taking another step toward becoming a serious member of the Shodo club.
Will Ayaru and Chinzei Actually Get a Romantic Moment?
I’m not expecting a sudden confession or a dramatic romance development in Chapter 3. The series seems much more interested in letting Ayaru’s feelings develop naturally while keeping Chinzei’s intentions firmly grounded in friendship and club activities.
That doesn’t mean there won’t be romantic comedy.
In fact, Suzuri’s arrival probably makes it even more likely.
Ayaru will almost certainly try to create some kind of one-on-one moment with Chinzei, only for Suzuri to interrupt with something completely practical about brushes, ink, or calligraphy technique. The more seriously Suzuri treats the shopping trip, the funnier Ayaru’s frustration becomes.
There is also a nice character dynamic developing here. Chinzei is the supportive presence, Suzuri is the strict technical mentor, and Ayaru is the chaotic beginner caught between them. That combination gives the manga more room than a straightforward romance story would have had.
Ayaru’s Brush with Romance Chapter 3 Expectations
Based on the setup from Chapter 2, the next chapter is likely to focus on three things: the shopping trip, Ayaru’s first serious calligraphy equipment, and the increasingly ridiculous tension between his romantic expectations and reality.
- Kakihara Stationery should become the main setting.
- Ayaru will likely choose or receive advice on his first proper brush.
- Suzuri should provide more practical Shodo knowledge.
- Chinzei and Ayaru’s relationship will probably get more awkward rather than immediately romantic.
- The comedy should come from Ayaru’s expectations constantly colliding with the actual situation.
The biggest thing I’m watching, though, is Ayaru’s development as a calligraphy student. The romance is the hook, but the Shodo storyline is quickly becoming just as important. His enthusiasm is genuine, even if he currently has almost no idea what he’s doing.
