The previous chapter wasn’t simply another stop between fights. Instead, it slowed everything down long enough to reveal one of the saddest characters the series has introduced so far before ending with a cliffhanger that promises another explosive confrontation.

Chapter 97 Wasn’t About Winning a Battle
When I finished reading Chapter 97, I realized something interesting.
The biggest moment wasn’t Lukas defeating an opponent.
It was Lukas giving someone peace.
That completely changed the tone of the chapter.
Instead of treating the masked assassin as another obstacle, Kuramori gradually peeled away layers of her past until she became one of the most tragic characters introduced in recent months.
The Story Behind the Mask
The chapter explains why the mysterious flower-masked warrior spent her entire life hidden from everyone.
She wasn’t feared because of something she chose.
She was feared because simply looking at her could bring death.
Her own family considered abandoning her from birth, terrified by what they believed was a curse. Only intervention from someone higher within the royal family allowed her to survive, though survival came with an unbearable price.
She was forced to hide her face forever.
Blind attendants surrounded her.
Everyone near her existed because they physically couldn’t see her.
That’s an incredibly cruel way to live, and Kuramori lets that tragedy breathe instead of rushing toward another action sequence.
The Curse Is More Interesting Than I Expected
One reveal I especially liked involved how her power actually functions.
Rather than showing the exact same horrifying appearance to everyone, her face reflects each viewer’s own subconscious image of death.
That makes the curse surprisingly psychological.
Instead of relying on pure supernatural horror, it weaponizes fear itself.
Some readers immediately started connecting this to Lukas, and honestly, I think they’re onto something.
Why Didn’t Lukas Die?
This is probably the biggest discussion happening among fans.
Several explanations seem possible.
- His defensive Gift may naturally interfere with hostile abilities.
- Years of trauma have fundamentally changed how he views death.
- His absolute focus on protecting others prevented the curse from affecting him.
Personally, I don’t think it’s only about his power.
Throughout the manga, Lukas has repeatedly shown an almost unsettling acceptance of death. That emotional state may have made him the worst possible target for a curse built around fear.
Whether that’s intentional or not, I love that Kuramori leaves enough room for readers to debate it.
The Most Emotional Scene in the Entire Chapter
For me, everything built toward one quiet exchange.
After spending her entire life believing she was a monster, the masked warrior finally asks Lukas what he sees.
His answer is incredibly simple.
She just looks like a normal woman.
No horror.
No monster.
No curse.
Just another person.
That’s what completely broke her.
Sometimes the smallest line of dialogue carries more weight than pages of exposition.
Her request for Lukas to end her suffering afterward doesn’t feel dramatic for the sake of drama.
It feels inevitable.
It’s tragic.
It’s heartbreaking.
And somehow, it’s also merciful.
I honestly think this scene will be remembered as one of the strongest emotional moments in Centuria so far.
Then Kuramori Immediately Pulls the Rug Out
Just when readers finally have a chance to process everything, the story slams directly into another crisis.
Lukas realizes he’s separated from his main weapon.
Before he can react…
Something enormous crashes into the battlefield.
The final pages are fantastic.
They’re chaotic without becoming confusing, and they instantly shift the mood from emotional closure back to overwhelming danger.
That’s exactly how you end a chapter if your goal is making readers desperate for the next release.
My Predictions for Chapter 98
Obviously nobody knows exactly where the story is going, but based on the ending, a few possibilities feel more likely than others.
1. Lukas Will Have to Fight Differently
Without immediate access to his spear, brute force probably isn’t an option.
I’d actually enjoy seeing a chapter focused almost entirely on survival.
Instead of overpowering an enemy, Lukas may need to rely on positioning, defense, and quick thinking.
That would make the upcoming battle feel very different from previous fights.
2. The Empire Isn’t Finished Yet
Chapter 97 made it clear that the masked warrior wasn’t simply another disposable soldier.
She had connections.
She mattered.
If those close to her learn what happened, I expect the Empire’s response to become much more personal.
That could dramatically raise the emotional stakes moving forward.
3. Reinforcements Could Arrive
Lukas currently appears isolated.
However, the impact shown in the final pages doesn’t exactly seem subtle.
If nearby allies heard it—and they almost certainly should have—there’s a good chance someone arrives before the battle reaches its conclusion.
Whether that’s Julian or another unexpected character remains to be seen.
Why I’m More Excited Than Ever
I’ve followed plenty of dark fantasy manga over the years, and many eventually fall into the same pattern:
- Fight.
- Power-up.
- Bigger enemy.
- Repeat.
Centuria still has exciting battles, but what keeps bringing me back is that the emotional moments usually matter more than the victories.
Chapter 97 is a perfect example.
Instead of making readers celebrate another defeated enemy, it asks us to sympathize with someone who spent her entire life believing she deserved to disappear.
That’s a much harder story to tell.
And in my opinion, it’s also a much more memorable one.
If Chapter 98 can combine that emotional depth with the massive confrontation teased in the final pages, we could be looking at one of the strongest chapters of the current arc.
For a series that’s already built a reputation for brutal twists and morally gray characters, that’s saying something.
