Gokurakugai Chapter 39 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting chapters of the current arc, and honestly, Chapter 38 left me with far more questions than answers. Yuto Sano has been steadily building tension around Yomi, Tatsuomi, Kanata, and the mysterious Maga hierarchy, but the ending of Chapter 38 feels like the moment when several storylines finally crash into each other.

The chapter was already intense because of Keishin’s desperate battle against Kanata, but then Sano dropped the real bombshell: Yatora and Memeko suddenly appeared inside the very place that was supposed to be secure.

And then Kanata called Memeko “Chihaya.”

That final name drop completely changes how I look at Memeko. There is clearly history here, and I have a feeling Chapter 39 is going to start peeling back one of the darker layers of Yomi’s past.

According to the current monthly serialization schedule, Gokurakugai Chapter 39 is expected to release on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Because Gokurakugai is serialized in Shueisha’s Jump SQ, readers should expect another monthly chapter rather than a weekly release. Unless Sano or Shueisha announces an unexpected break, October 1 is the date fans should have circled.

Chapter 38 Recap: Keishin Refuses to Die

The biggest surprise for me in Chapter 38 wasn’t even Yatora or Memeko. It was Keishin.

The fight between Keishin and Kanata turned into something much more personal than a simple clash between a human guard and a Maga. Kanata sees himself as inherently superior and treats everyone around him like disposable garbage. He can’t understand why Keishin would willingly put his life on the line for Tatsuomi.

To Kanata, loyalty is weakness.

To Keishin, it is everything.

That difference is what makes their confrontation work so well.

Kanata repeatedly mocks Keishin for acting like a disposable pawn, but Keishin doesn’t even hesitate. His answer is basically the complete opposite of Kanata’s worldview: his life belongs to the Chief because Tatsuomi once gave him a reason to keep living.

The flashback showing Keishin injured and broken while Tatsuomi sat in a wheelchair was short, but it told us a lot. We still don’t know exactly what happened between them, yet it is obvious that their relationship isn’t simply that of a boss and subordinate.

There is a debt here.

And Keishin is willing to pay it with his life.

Kanata’s “Starvation” Transformation

The fight becomes increasingly brutal when Kanata reaches his limit.

His hunger takes over, and his movements suddenly become much more aggressive. He manages to land what appears to be a finishing attack on Keishin, leaving the guard bleeding heavily on the floor.

For a moment, I genuinely thought Keishin was finished.

Then he stood back up.

That moment perfectly summarizes his character.

Keishin knows he is running out of blood. He knows his body is failing. But he also realizes something important: Tatsuomi is relying on him now.

That thought gives him enough strength to continue.

Keishin eventually manages to cut off Kanata’s leg and pin him down. What follows is arguably the most satisfying psychological beat of the chapter.

Kanata keeps asking why Keishin won’t fall.

The answer is simple: Keishin doesn’t believe he has permission to fall.

That is much more powerful than another flashy attack.

Kanata’s Breakdown Was Actually Sad

This is where Chapter 38 became much more interesting than I expected.

Kanata’s arrogance finally collapses.

After being pushed to the brink, he starts crying and desperately insists that he is special because his parents told him he was the best. His entire personality suddenly makes sense in a completely different way.

He isn’t confident because he knows he is strong.

He’s confident because he desperately needs to believe he is special.

And Keishin destroys that illusion with one brutal observation: Yomi gave Kanata a mission, and he failed it.

The Chief is alive.

Keishin is alive.

Therefore, Kanata failed.

Calling him “useless” is almost crueler than physically defeating him.

It attacks the exact part of Kanata’s identity that he has been protecting throughout his life.

Yomi’s Past and the Mystery of Memeko

This is where things get really interesting.

Kanata’s breakdown triggers memories involving Yomi and several members of the organization. Among them is Yatora, whose presence immediately establishes that these characters have been connected for a long time.

But the real shock is Memeko.

During the flashback, she appears at the same table, calmly eating while Kanata struggles emotionally.

Then Kanata screams her name.

“MEMEKO!”

And when she appears in the present, Kanata recognizes her as Chihaya.

That single name is easily my biggest takeaway from Chapter 38.

My theory: Chihaya and Kanata knew each other before Yomi

I don’t think “Chihaya” is just a random former name.

The flashback strongly suggests that Kanata and Chihaya belonged to the same environment before their current identities were established. Whether they were children raised by Yomi, experimental subjects, or potential Maga candidates is still unclear.

But something happened between them.

And judging from Kanata’s reaction, it wasn’t something minor.

The fact that Memeko looks completely calm while Kanata is psychologically falling apart makes the relationship even more fascinating.

She remembers him.

Or at least, she knows exactly who he is.

Why Yatora and Memeko’s Arrival Changes Everything

The final pages completely change the situation inside Saragi’s base.

Tao and Chihiro arrive expecting to deal with Kanata, only to discover that Yatora and Memeko have already breached the area.

Even worse, Memeko casually carries the unconscious body of another man as if it weighs nothing.

Yatora is equally unsettling. He walks in casually, apparently without any concern for the people surrounding him.

This doesn’t feel like a normal invasion.

It feels like Yomi is sending a message.

“Your security means nothing to us.”

And if that’s the case, Chapter 39 could become one of the most important confrontations of the arc.

What Could Happen in Gokurakugai Chapter 39?

Here are the three possibilities I think are most interesting.

1. Tao and Chihiro Fight Yatora and Memeko

This is the obvious one, but I wouldn’t complain.

Tao has been one of the most consistently impressive characters in Gokurakugai, and putting her directly against Yomi’s elite forces could finally show us just how dangerous she really is.

Chihiro being involved makes things even better because we could get a completely different fighting style alongside Tao.

2. Kanata Reveals the Truth About “Chihaya”

This is the outcome I personally want the most.

Kanata is already mentally broken. If Chapter 39 focuses on his relationship with Memeko, we could finally learn:

• Who Chihaya really was.
• Why she became Memeko.
• How she became connected to Yomi.
• What happened between her and Kanata.
• Whether they were part of the same experiment or project.

Even a few flashback pages could completely change our understanding of both characters.

3. Tatsuomi Finally Makes a Move

Tatsuomi has spent much of the confrontation sitting back and watching everything unfold.

That cannot continue forever.

The biggest mystery surrounding him is still his physical condition and what he is actually capable of. The wheelchair is obviously important, but I don’t think Sano has spent all this time emphasizing Tatsuomi’s position just to make him a helpless old man.

If Yomi’s strongest people are standing directly inside his command room, this is the perfect moment to reveal something.

My Favorite Part of Chapter 38

For me, it’s not the final cliffhanger.

It’s Keishin standing back up.

There is something incredibly satisfying about a character who isn’t necessarily the strongest person in the room but simply refuses to quit.

Kanata has superior Maga abilities. He is faster, more monstrous, and far more physically dangerous.

But Keishin has something Kanata doesn’t understand: purpose.

Kanata desperately wants to be special.

Keishin doesn’t care about being special.

He just wants to protect the person he chose to follow.

And somehow, that makes Keishin feel like the stronger character.

Final Thoughts Before Chapter 39

Gokurakugai Chapter 38 was much more than a setup chapter. It gave Kanata unexpected emotional depth, reinforced Keishin’s relationship with Tatsuomi, expanded the mystery surrounding Yomi, and then introduced what could be one of the most important character connections in the entire series.

The Chihaya/Memeko mystery is now at the top of my list.

I also can’t stop thinking about why Yatora and Memeko were able to enter so easily. If they really are among Yomi’s strongest enforcers, then Saragi’s security situation is far worse than anyone expected.

Chapter 39 has several directions it could take, but I really hope Sano doesn’t rush the Chihaya reveal. There is clearly an emotional history behind that name, and letting Kanata and Memeko’s past unfold gradually could make the eventual payoff much stronger.

For now, the most important things to remember are simple: Keishin survived, Kanata is broken, Tatsuomi is cornered, Tao and Chihiro are facing an unexpected threat, and Memeko may have just revealed that her entire identity is hiding a much bigger secret.

If Chapter 38 was the warning shot, Chapter 39 could be where the real war finally begins.
