Power scaling is one of those topics that always starts arguments in the Mushoku Tensei community. And honestly, I get why. This series doesn’t treat strength like a simple number. Characters win because of preparation, experience, strategy, and sometimes pure luck rather than just having a bigger attack.
After everything Eris goes through in the Sword Sanctum, I kept seeing the same question pop up everywhere: Has Eris actually become stronger than Rudeus?
After revisiting both the anime and the light novel material, my answer is… yes and no.
That probably sounds like a cop-out, but hear me out.
Eris Didn’t Leave Because She Hated Rudeus
One thing I think many anime-only viewers misunderstood years ago was Eris’s departure.
She wasn’t abandoning Rudeus.
She wasn’t rejecting him.
She wasn’t trying to be cruel.
After witnessing the unbelievable strength of Orsted, Eris realized something that completely shattered her confidence. She believed she wasn’t strong enough to stand beside Rudeus. If another monster like the Dragon God appeared, she wouldn’t be able to protect him—or even survive herself.
Instead of making promises, she chose the hardest path possible.
She disappeared to become stronger.
Looking back now, that decision completely changed her future.
The Sword Sanctum Turned Eris Into a Monster
When Eris reaches the Holy Land of Swords, she already has incredible talent.
Talent, however, wasn’t enough.
Training under the Sword God style is brutal, and Eris embraces every painful lesson because she has only one goal in mind: become powerful enough that nobody can threaten Rudeus again.
By the end of this journey, she’s almost an entirely different fighter.
Some of her biggest improvements include:
- Becoming a Sword King
- Learning the devastating Sword of Light
- Studying parts of the North God Style
- Improving her adaptability against different sword schools
- Sharpening her instincts through countless life-or-death battles
What impresses me most isn’t just her speed.
It’s how much smarter she becomes as a fighter.
Early-series Eris relied heavily on overwhelming aggression. Sword Sanctum Eris still fights aggressively, but now every movement has purpose.
She knows exactly when to attack.
She knows when to wait.
That experience matters.
Rudeus Grew in a Completely Different Direction
While Eris focused on becoming the ultimate swordswoman, Rudeus continued developing into arguably the greatest magician of his generation.
His biggest advantage has never been physical strength.
It’s versatility.
His enormous mana pool allows him to cast spells that very few mages could even dream of using repeatedly.
By this point in the story, Rudeus has several enormous advantages:

This is where I think many power-scaling discussions miss the point.
Instead of asking “Who’s stronger?”, the better question is:
“Where does the fight begin?”
That single detail changes everything.
Close Range
This is Eris’s world.
If she starts within striking distance, I honestly don’t see many realistic ways for base Rudeus to survive.
Even with the Eye of Foresight, seeing an attack coming isn’t the same as physically avoiding it.
A Sword King’s speed is simply ridiculous.
Once Eris closes the gap, the fight could end in seconds.
Mid Range
Now things become interesting.
This is probably the most unpredictable scenario.
Rudeus has enough space to create obstacles, launch spells, and slow Eris’s advance.
Meanwhile, Eris has enough mobility to keep pressuring him without immediately walking into disaster.
This matchup feels like a chess game where one mistake decides everything.
I’d call it almost even.
Long Range
Here I don’t think it’s particularly close.
Rudeus dominates.
His offensive magic covers enormous areas, constantly pressures opponents, and forces them to react.
Eris is incredibly fast.
She’s not faster than an entire battlefield exploding around her.
If Rudeus begins the fight from a safe distance, I’d put my money on him almost every time.
The Magic Armor Changes Everything
This is the biggest reason I hesitate whenever someone says Eris permanently surpassed Rudeus.
Eventually, Rudeus develops the Magic Armor.
And honestly?
It’s one of my favorite upgrades in the series because it doesn’t magically erase his weaknesses—it compensates for them.
The armor dramatically improves:
- Physical durability
- Movement speed
- Close-range survivability
- Overall combat efficiency
Most importantly, Rudeus keeps everything that already made him terrifying.
He doesn’t sacrifice his magic.
He simply becomes much harder to kill.
That completely changes the matchup.
Why Their Strengths Actually Complement Each Other
One thing I’ve always appreciated about Mushoku Tensei is that it avoids making one protagonist obsolete.
Eris and Rudeus fill opposite roles.
Eris excels at:
- Eliminating fast melee threats
- Protecting allies
- Winning direct sword fights
- Pressuring elite warriors
Rudeus excels at:
- Destroying enemies from distance
- Supporting teammates
- Controlling entire battlefields
- Fighting prolonged engagements
That’s why they’re so effective together.
Neither replaces the other.
Each covers the other’s biggest weakness.
My Final Verdict
If we’re talking about base Rudeus immediately after Eris returns from the Sword Sanctum, I genuinely believe Eris has surpassed him in a straight duel.
She’s faster.
She’s deadlier up close.
Her instincts are among the best in the series.
But overall power isn’t measured only by who wins a sword fight.
Rudeus remains one of the most dangerous characters in Mushoku Tensei because his magic allows him to influence battles on an entirely different scale. Add the Magic Armor into the equation, and the balance shifts once again in his favor.
That’s exactly why I enjoy comparing these two. They’re not rivals competing for the same strengths—they represent two completely different paths to becoming powerful.
And in my opinion, that’s far more interesting than simply declaring one character stronger than the other.
By the time Mushoku Tensei Season 3 reaches these events, Eris has fulfilled the promise she silently made years earlier. She returns not as the impulsive girl who left Rudeus behind, but as a warrior capable of standing beside him without hesitation. Rudeus, meanwhile, has grown into a mage whose intelligence and overwhelming magical talent rival the greatest figures in the world.
So if someone asks me, “Is Eris stronger than Rudeus?”, my answer is always the same:
At arm’s length? Absolutely.
Across a battlefield? I’m betting on Rudeus.
And honestly, I think that’s exactly how the story was meant to be.
