Unlike many fantasy anime where the strongest character is obvious, Tappei Nagatsuki builds a world where power is wrapped in mystery, history, and terrifying legends. Characters don’t just throw bigger explosions—they bend reality, rewrite fate, or survive situations that should be impossible.
And among all those legends, Volcanica, the Divine Dragon, has always fascinated me the most.
Anime-only viewers are finally approaching one of the biggest lore-heavy moments in the franchise with the Pleiades Watchtower Arc, and I honestly think many fans are about to realize that Volcanica isn’t just another giant dragon waiting for an epic fight. He’s something much older, stranger, and arguably more frightening than almost anyone else in the Re:ZERO universe.
Let’s take a closer look at why the Divine Dragon deserves his mythical reputation.
The Dragon Who Helped Save the World
Long before Subaru ever appeared in Lugunica, the world experienced what could only be described as its greatest disaster.
The Witch of Envy, Satella, nearly destroyed everything.
Stopping her wasn’t the work of a single hero. Instead, history remembers an almost unbelievable trio:
- Flugel the Sage
- Reid Astrea, the first Sword Saint
- Volcanica, the Divine Dragon
Together, they managed to seal Satella away, an achievement that has shaped the entire history of the kingdom.
After that battle, Volcanica formed a covenant with the royal family of Lugunica, becoming the kingdom’s divine protector. That single agreement is the reason Lugunica is famously known as the Dragon Kingdom.
For centuries, however, Volcanica disappeared from public view, remaining deep inside the mysterious Pleiades Watchtower, hidden beyond the deadly Augria Sand Dunes.
That long isolation becomes incredibly important later.
Why Volcanica Is Different From Every Other Dragon
One mistake I often see newer fans make is assuming Volcanica fights like a traditional fantasy dragon.
He doesn’t.
Almost every legendary ability tied to him feels closer to divine authority than ordinary magic.
Some of his most remarkable powers include:
- Purifying Dragon Breath capable of erasing enemies rather than simply burning them.
- Space-distorting attacks that ignore conventional defenses.

What’s especially interesting is that Volcanica’s strength isn’t only about destruction.

Where Satella embodies endless corruption, Volcanica symbolizes purification and protection.
That contrast feels intentional throughout the series.
The Biggest Twist: We Never Actually See Prime Volcanica
This is probably my favorite piece of Re:ZERO lore.
When Subaru and the others finally encounter Volcanica during the Watchtower events, they’re not meeting the legendary dragon that fought Satella centuries ago.
Instead, they’re facing a dragon whose mind has deteriorated after roughly four hundred years.
- His memories are fragmented.
- His personality has faded.
- Much of his judgment is gone.
He’s essentially functioning on instinct alone.
That completely changes how we should interpret everything he does afterward.
Even a Weakened Volcanica Is Almost Unstoppable
One detail that always impresses me is how effortlessly Volcanica demonstrates overwhelming superiority despite his condition.
During the Watchtower events, he performs feats that would normally define the strongest character in almost any fantasy series.
Some examples include:
- Dispersing Satella’s terrifying shadows with attacks powerful enough to temporarily halt their advance.
- Destroying Emilia’s powerful ice creations without showing signs of effort.
- Remaining virtually unharmed against attacks from some of the strongest modern magic users.
That’s the frightening part.
If this version truly represents only a fraction of his original strength, imagining Prime Volcanica becomes almost impossible.
Where Does Volcanica Rank?
Power scaling in Re:ZERO is always controversial because abilities often depend on special rules rather than raw strength.
Still, some comparisons are easier than others.

The Reinhard Debate Never Gets Old
If you’ve spent any time reading Re:ZERO discussions online, you’ve almost certainly seen one recurring question:
Who wins—Reinhard or Volcanica?
I actually enjoy that there’s no perfectly clean answer.
Reinhard possesses ridiculous Divine Blessings, incredible adaptability, and overwhelming combat talent.
Volcanica, meanwhile, represents one of the oldest and most respected beings in existence.
One of the coolest pieces of trivia from the franchise is that Volcanica is powerful enough to force the Dragon Sword Reid to acknowledge him as a worthy opponent.
That alone says everything.
Whether Reinhard ultimately wins probably depends more on endurance and his unique blessings than on simple physical strength.
Satella Remains the Ultimate Exception
Despite everything Volcanica can do, Satella continues to stand apart.
History itself proves this.
Volcanica couldn’t seal her alone.
Neither could Reid.
Nor Flugel.
It required all three working together.
That tells us something incredibly important.
Satella isn’t simply stronger.
She’s fundamentally different.
Her immortality and endless mana generation push her beyond the normal rules governing nearly every other character.
Why Volcanica Makes Re:ZERO’s World Feel So Unique
One reason I think Re:ZERO stands above many modern isekai is its willingness to leave mysteries unsolved for years.
Volcanica perfectly represents that approach.
He’s introduced as a legendary protector.
Later, we discover he’s mentally deteriorating.
Then we slowly learn that even this weakened version remains one of the strongest beings alive.
Instead of reducing the mystery, every revelation makes him even more intriguing.
As Season 4 continues adapting the Watchtower storyline, I wouldn’t be surprised if anime-only viewers suddenly realize just how enormous the gap is between ordinary heroes and the ancient legends who shaped this world’s history.
For me, that’s what makes Volcanica unforgettable.
He’s not simply a powerful dragon.
He’s living history—a reminder that the greatest battles in Re:ZERO happened centuries before Subaru’s story even began, and the echoes of those conflicts still define everything happening today.
