For me, this is the part that makes the next season especially exciting. These aren’t simply isolated adventures where Lawrence arrives in a town, makes some money and leaves with Holo. The conflicts become larger, the stakes become more personal, and the relationship between the two protagonists gets tested in ways that cannot be solved by clever bargaining alone.
If Passione receives another 24–25 episode, two-cour season, there should be enough breathing room to handle the larger storylines without turning them into a speedrun.
And please, let them take their time.
The worst thing that could happen to Spice and Wolf would be an adaptation that races through important conversations just to hit a predetermined endpoint.
Why Holo and Lawrence Remain the Heart of the Series
After all these years, it is still surprisingly difficult to find an anime duo quite like Holo and Lawrence.
Lawrence is not some unstoppable fantasy hero. He is a merchant trying to make money while avoiding financial disaster. Holo, meanwhile, is incredibly intelligent, playful and occasionally terrifying when she decides to remind Lawrence exactly who he is dealing with.

That chemistry is why I think the return of Jun Fukuyama as Kraft Lawrence and Ami Koshimizu as Holo is so important. Recasting either character would have been a major gamble. Their voices have become inseparable from the modern version of these characters, and their performances are a huge part of why the reboot feels emotionally convincing.
The Returning Staff Is Good News for Season 2
Another reassuring part of the announcement is the continuation of the creative team behind the reboot.
Nobuyoshi Nagayama and Takahiro Majima are set to continue directing duties at Studio Passione, while Takeo Takahashi and Hijiri Sanpei remain involved in supervisory roles. That kind of continuity is exactly what I wanted to see.

I can already imagine a Season 2 scene where Holo and Lawrence are walking through some unfamiliar town at sunset, the conversation turns unexpectedly serious, and Penkin’s music starts doing half the emotional work.

While the exact episode count and arc order remain important unanswered questions, the next season should continue the elements that define the franchise:

Spice and Wolf is a slow-burn anime, and its production should reflect that philosophy. The series depends heavily on dialogue, facial expressions, atmosphere and small emotional shifts. If the animation quality drops or the pacing becomes too aggressive, the entire experience suffers.
There is also something strangely appropriate about the wait itself. The franchise has never been about rushing toward the next big moment. It is about traveling from one place to another, making decisions, taking risks and seeing where those choices lead.
So yes, waiting for 2027 is frustrating.
But if the result is another season that gives Holo and Lawrence enough time to talk, argue, bargain, travel and occasionally make terrible decisions together, I’m absolutely willing to wait.

Now we just need that exact release date.
And preferably another teaser where Holo looks like she already knows something terrible is about to happen while Lawrence has absolutely no idea.
That would be extremely on brand.
