Tensura Season 4 Lore: What is Turn Null and Void God Azathoth?

There is a point in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime where Rimuru Tempest stops feeling like an unusually powerful protagonist and starts feeling like something entirely different.

At first, Rimuru is just a slime trying to survive. Then he becomes a monster, a Demon Lord, a ruler, and eventually one of the most terrifying beings in the Tensura universe. But even that progression doesn’t fully prepare you for Void God Azathoth and its most infamous ability, Turn Null, also known as Nihility Collapse.

For me, this is one of the most interesting parts of Tensura’s power system because it changes the question from “How strong is Rimuru?” to “What exactly can Rimuru do to reality itself?”

And that’s a much bigger question.

What Is Void God Azathoth?

Void God Azathoth is an incredibly powerful Ultimate Skill associated with Rimuru’s later evolution. Unlike the abilities Rimuru starts the story with, Azathoth represents the combination of several abilities and concepts that have been developing throughout the entire series.

The skill is closely connected to Ciel, the Manas that evolved from Raphael. This is an important distinction because Rimuru’s greatest advantage isn’t simply having enormous energy reserves. It’s having Ciel constantly analyzing, optimizing, and managing abilities that would otherwise be nearly impossible to control.

Azathoth incorporates powers derived from Rimuru’s previous skills, including the predatory abilities associated with Beelzebuth, along with abilities connected to the True Dragons.

The result is less like a conventional “super attack” and more like an entire weapons system.

And that’s where Turn Null becomes especially important.

Turn Null: Rimuru’s Most Terrifying Source of Power

Turn Null is often described as Nihility Collapse, and the name itself gives you a pretty good idea of what makes it different.

It isn’t simply another form of magicules.

The ability is connected to an extremely fundamental form of energy associated with the void and the destructive/creative potential behind existence itself. This is what makes Turn Null so fascinating within Tensura’s cosmology.

The same basic concept of nothingness can represent both destruction and creation.

That sounds contradictory at first, but it actually fits Tensura surprisingly well. The series has always played with the idea that creation requires something to exist first, while destruction can return that existence to nothing.

Turn Null sits right in the middle of those two ideas.

Why Is Turn Null So Dangerous?

Its potential can be summarized through three major characteristics:

• Destructive Power: Turn Null can be used as an overwhelmingly destructive energy source capable of affecting targets far beyond ordinary physical durability.
• Creative Potential: Because the energy is associated with the foundation of existence, it can also serve as a source for creation rather than merely destruction.
• Extreme Instability: This isn’t something Rimuru can casually treat like an ordinary spell. Ciel’s calculations and management are essential to making effective use of it.

This last point is easy to overlook.

People sometimes talk about Rimuru’s abilities as though he simply presses a button and reality disappears. That’s not really what makes him dangerous. Ciel is a huge part of the equation.

Rimuru has the power, but Ciel provides the absurd level of analysis and control needed to turn that power into something usable.

Imaginary Space Is the Perfect Partner for Turn Null

One of the coolest parts of this entire setup is Imaginary Space.

The ability developed from Rimuru’s earlier storage and predation-related powers into something much more significant. It provides an isolated internal space where enormous quantities of energy and objects can be contained.

This becomes extremely important for Turn Null.

Instead of treating Turn Null as something Rimuru has to immediately unleash, Ciel can manage and store its energy within Imaginary Space.

Think of it as having an absurdly powerful cosmic battery hidden inside Rimuru.

The longer Rimuru has access to this system, the more frightening the idea becomes. His limitations aren’t simply about how much energy he possesses at one particular moment. The entire system is designed around storage, management, conversion, and controlled release.

That is one reason later Rimuru feels so different from the character we met at the beginning of the story.

The Other Abilities Inside Azathoth

Turn Null gets most of the attention, but Azathoth isn’t powerful because of one ability alone.

Its real strength comes from how several extremely powerful functions complement each other.

This combination is what makes Azathoth so ridiculous.

If Rimuru only had Turn Null, he would possess enormous destructive potential. If he only had Soul Gluttony, he would still be an exceptional predator. If he only had Ciel, he would have an extraordinary analytical advantage.

Put all of these systems together, however, and you get something much closer to a complete cosmic combat platform.

Why Ciel Might Be the Most Important Part

Personally, I think fans sometimes focus too heavily on Rimuru’s raw numbers.

Yes, the energy output is ridiculous. Yes, his later abilities are on another level. But Ciel is arguably what makes the whole thing practical.

Imagine giving someone an unimaginably powerful weapon but no way to calculate how it works.

That’s essentially where Rimuru could end up without Ciel.

Ciel can analyze abilities, optimize energy usage, manage complex processes, and react to changing situations at speeds that normal characters simply cannot match.

This is particularly important when Rimuru encounters powers based on concepts rather than simple physical attacks.

Tensura’s strongest battles aren’t always about throwing the biggest fireball.

They can involve souls, information, dimensions, time, barriers, energy systems, and fundamental laws of the world.

That’s the level where Ciel becomes incredibly valuable.

Does Turn Null Really Make Rimuru Invincible?

This is where I would be careful with the usual fan discussions.

It’s tempting to describe Turn Null as an automatic “delete everything” button, but Tensura’s power system is more complicated than that.

The effectiveness of any ability depends on the circumstances, the opponent, the interaction between abilities, and how those abilities are interpreted within the world’s rules.

Rimuru is overwhelmingly powerful at this stage, but that doesn’t mean every battle can be reduced to:

Rimuru uses Turn Null → opponent disappears.

The fun part is seeing how different high-level abilities interact.

That becomes particularly important when Rimuru encounters opponents and forces operating on similarly ridiculous levels.

Why This Matters for Tensura Season 4

For anime-only viewers, the biggest shock of the later Tensura story isn’t simply that Rimuru becomes stronger.

It’s how fundamentally different the scale of conflict becomes.

Early Tensura is about surviving monsters, building Tempest, dealing with Demon Lords, and protecting Rimuru’s people.

Later Tensura starts dealing with beings and abilities that challenge the structure of the world itself.

That progression makes Azathoth feel like the natural culmination of Rimuru’s journey.

He began as a slime whose biggest advantage was his ability to absorb things.

Eventually, that same basic idea evolves into something almost unrecognizable.

He doesn’t just consume monsters anymore.

His abilities can interact with souls, energy, space, time, dimensions, and the very foundations of existence.

And honestly, that’s one of the reasons I enjoy Tensura’s power progression despite how absurd it eventually becomes.

Rimuru’s Evolution Comes Full Circle

The most satisfying part about Azathoth isn’t actually its power level.

It’s the fact that the ability feels connected to Rimuru’s entire journey.

The original Rimuru survived by eating and analyzing.

Raphael gave him greater intelligence and control.

Ciel took that concept even further.

Beelzebuth developed his ability to consume.

The True Dragons expanded the scale of his power.

And eventually, these different pieces converge into something that feels almost godlike.

Void God Azathoth is essentially the final expression of Rimuru’s evolution.

Turn Null represents destruction and creation. Imaginary Space provides storage and isolation. Ciel provides control. Rimuru provides the will to use all of it.

That’s a much more interesting explanation than simply saying, “Rimuru became overpowered.”

Final Thoughts

If That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime continues adapting the later light novel material, the introduction of Rimuru’s highest-level abilities will completely change how anime viewers look at him.

Turn Null isn’t interesting just because it has an enormous destructive potential. It’s interesting because of what it represents within Tensura’s cosmology: the connection between nothingness, destruction, and creation.

And Void God Azathoth takes that idea and surrounds it with an entire collection of abilities designed for offense, defense, storage, analysis, and control.

For me, that’s the real reason Rimuru’s endgame power is so entertaining.

He didn’t simply receive one absurdly strong ability.

His entire skill system gradually evolved until the character who once wandered around as a harmless-looking slime became one of the most formidable entities in the Tensura universe.

If Season 4 eventually brings more of this material to the screen, anime-only fans are going to discover that the Rimuru they know from the early seasons is only the beginning.
