The moment Seiichiro realizes something is moving through the grass, the entire atmosphere changes. Instead of trying to understand what’s happening, he makes the only decision that makes sense: run.
Seiichiro, Eisuke, and Reiko push through the tall grass while the monkeys move around them almost invisibly.
And that’s where the chapter’s most disturbing idea comes back into focus.
These aren’t random animals charging blindly at humans.
They’re coordinated.
They recognize threats. They communicate. They remember individual people. Most importantly, they appear capable of changing their behavior based on previous encounters.
That’s what makes the setting so effective.
A gunshot doesn’t necessarily make the situation safer. It might actually make you more dangerous to the troop.
Eisuke Finally Crosses the Line
The most important character moment in Chapter 5 belongs to Eisuke.
When Reiko is attacked, everything suddenly becomes extremely personal. A monkey manages to get her down in the grass, and for a few seconds Eisuke is basically watching someone die.
Then he acts.
He attacks the monkey with his blade and kills it in a burst of desperate violence.
This isn’t a heroic anime power-up.
That’s precisely why I think the scene works.
Eisuke doesn’t suddenly become some fearless monster hunter. He is terrified. He’s covered in blood, shaking, and clearly struggling to process what he just did.
But there is a major difference between Eisuke before this scene and Eisuke afterward.
He has now killed one of the things hunting them.
And the monkeys have seen it.
That could become a huge problem in Chapter 6.
The Van and That Horrifying Final Panel
Just when the grassland sequence seems like it couldn’t get any more chaotic, something appears in the sky.
A strange burning object streaks overhead before disappearing toward the mountains.
We aren’t given enough information to confidently identify it, which is exactly why fans are already going crazy with theories.
Then comes the bigger surprise.
Headlights.
A rescue vehicle suddenly tears through the grass at frightening speed.
Seiichiro immediately orders everyone down as the van crashes through the area.
And then comes the image that completely changes the mood of the chapter:
a severed human head rolls onto the ground.
That’s the cliffhanger.
No convenient explanation. No immediate reveal. Just a brutal reminder that whatever happened before Wanibuchi arrived was probably much worse than we realized.
My Biggest Monkey Hunting Chapter 6 Predictions
I’m usually skeptical about trying to predict horror manga because the best ones deliberately hide information from the reader.
Still, Chapter 5 leaves us with several obvious questions.
1. Who Does the Severed Head Belong To?
This is easily my biggest question.
The simplest possibility is that the head belongs to someone from the other group of researchers.
If that’s true, the van isn’t really a rescue vehicle in the traditional sense. Wanibuchi may have escaped from another massacre and accidentally—or desperately—brought the aftermath with him.
And that’s much scarier.
Imagine finally seeing a vehicle and thinking, We’re saved.
Then a human head falls out.
Yeah. I’m not getting into that van.
At least, not without asking some very serious questions first.
2. What Was That Burning Object?
The mysterious projectile is another detail I don’t think should be ignored.
It could be a flare or some kind of emergency signal. It could also have something to do with whatever larger event is unfolding in the mountains.
But there’s an even crazier possibility: the monkeys could be responsible.
I don’t necessarily believe that theory yet, but if the manga confirms that the troop is capable of using objects or weapons in a sophisticated way, the entire survival dynamic changes.
At that point, humans wouldn’t simply be hiding from intelligent animals.
They’d be fighting an enemy capable of planning.
3. Is Eisuke Now a Target?
This one feels almost inevitable.
Eisuke has personally killed one of the monkeys.
If the manga’s previous explanation about their memory and recognition is accurate, the troop now has a reason to remember him.
That could make Eisuke one of the most important targets in Chapter 6.
And honestly, I think that’s a much more interesting direction for his character than simply turning him into a stronger fighter.
I’d rather see Eisuke become more capable but increasingly traumatized.
That’s much more appropriate for this kind of horror story.
Why Monkey Hunting Feels Different
One thing that has surprised me about this manga is how little it relies on traditional survival-horror shortcuts.

The quiet moments are where Monkey Hunting works best.
Give me a few pages of the characters realizing that something is wrong. Let them hear movement in the darkness. Let them question whether the van is actually safe.
Then hit us.
That’s where this series seems to be at its strongest.
Final Thoughts: Chapter 6 Could Be a Major Turning Point
Chapter 5 feels less like another episode of the same survival story and more like the beginning of a new phase.
The characters aren’t simply trying to escape monkeys anymore.
They’re dealing with a coordinated enemy, a mysterious outside event, an unknown number of casualties, and a rescue vehicle that may be connected to another disaster.
And Eisuke has changed.
He finally fought back, but that victory may have painted a target on his back.
That’s why I’m particularly excited for Monkey Hunting Chapter 6. The question isn’t really whether the survivors can kill more monkeys.
The real question is:
How much of themselves are they willing to lose just to stay alive?
If Chapter 5 was the moment the situation became chaotic, Chapter 6 could be the chapter where we finally discover just how large this nightmare really is.
And personally, I’m expecting the answer to be much worse than anyone in that mountain is prepared for.
