I honestly thought the Subaru vs. Oshima fight was going to end with the triple kick.

That seemed like the obvious payoff. Subaru lands the ridiculous mid-air combination, Oshima gets battered by it, and for a moment it looks like the match has finally been decided by a devastating Waza-ari. It would have been a perfectly believable ending for a tournament fight this brutal.

Then the final pages happened.

Oshima got back up.

And that completely changed the emotional meaning of Subaru the Invincible Chapter 22.

But he doesn’t stay down.

No dramatic knockout.

No last-second reversal.

No miracle technique.

The referee separates the fighters and awards the decision to Subaru.

That detail is important because Subaru absolutely deserves the victory. Oshima surviving the triple kick doesn’t erase everything that happened beforehand. Subaru pushed him to the edge and controlled enough of the fight to earn the decision.

But Oshima accomplished something else.

He survived Subaru’s best offensive stretch and stayed standing until the final second.

For me, that makes the result considerably more interesting than another knockout would have been.

A clean KO would have said, “Subaru is simply on another level.”

It’s a small moment, but I loved it because the manga doesn’t overplay it. There isn’t some giant speech about friendship. There isn’t a forced emotional monologue explaining what the fight meant.

They just understand each other.

They fought as hard as they could, and now they respect each other.

That’s enough.

And considering how vicious the actual fight was, the contrast makes the scene hit harder.

Oshima’s Real Victory Comes After the Match

The most emotional part of Chapter 22 isn’t even Subaru.

It’s Oshima and his coach.

Oshima’s coach looks at him with genuine pride, thanking him for showing him this dream. Oshima then responds by making it clear that their dream isn’t finished.

They can dream bigger.

They can keep going.

They can keep chasing something that once seemed out of reach.

That final idea is what gives Oshima’s defeat meaning. He lost the match, but the chapter refuses to frame him as a failed fighter. Instead, his comeback becomes another step in his story.

The closing idea of Oshima aiming for the stars after his comeback match feels deliberately important.

I would not be surprised if this character returns later.

What Could Happen in Subaru the Invincible Chapter 23?

Chapter 22 gives us a very clean ending emotionally, which means Chapter 23 has room to move the tournament forward.

Here are the possibilities I’m watching most closely.

1. Subaru’s Next Opponent Could Be Studying the Oshima Fight

Subaru’s opponents now have something extremely valuable: footage of him fighting at full intensity.

And Oshima just demonstrated that surviving Subaru’s explosive offense is possible.

That creates an obvious problem.

The next fighter doesn’t need to copy Oshima. They just need to learn from him.

How do you stop Subaru’s momentum before he reaches that overwhelming rhythm?

That’s potentially much more dangerous than simply trying to overpower him.

If Chapter 23 introduces the next opponent, I expect the manga to make a point of showing that this fighter has already been paying attention.

2. Subaru May Finally Feel the Cost of the Fight

Subaru won, but winning doesn’t mean he walked away fresh.

He fought at an absurd pace, absorbed pressure from Oshima, and had to maintain his offensive rhythm until the very end.

A tournament is different from a single fight.

There is no luxury of completely recovering before the next challenge.

That makes Subaru’s condition one of the biggest questions heading into Chapter 23.

Can his body keep up with his fighting style?

That’s something his father, Koji Kannagi, may have plenty to say about.

I could easily see a locker-room or post-match conversation where Subaru is told that winning isn’t enough if every fight leaves him exhausted. If the tournament continues to escalate, efficiency is going to matter just as much as raw ability.

3. Don’t Count Oshima Out Yet

This is probably my biggest prediction.

I don’t think Oshima’s story ends with the decision loss.

The manga went out of its way to give him an emotional resolution with his coach. His promise to dream bigger feels less like a goodbye and more like the beginning of another chapter.

He could return as a training partner.

He could become an important source of defensive knowledge.

Or he could simply continue competing elsewhere and eventually cross paths with Subaru again.

I actually prefer the last possibility.

Oshima doesn’t need to become Subaru’s permanent sidekick. His character works because he has his own dream.

Keeping him on his own path while allowing the rivalry with Subaru to develop naturally would make their future encounters much more meaningful.

Why Chapter 22 Changes Subaru’s Tournament Arc

The biggest thing Chapter 22 accomplishes is that it makes Subaru’s opponents feel like actual characters rather than stepping stones.

Oshima could have existed purely to demonstrate another level of Subaru’s power.

Instead, he gets his own emotional conclusion.

That’s important for a tournament manga because the danger is always the same: once the protagonist becomes overwhelmingly strong, every opponent can start feeling disposable.

Oshima avoids that problem.

He loses, but he earns respect.

And Subaru doesn’t become less impressive because of it. If anything, the victory becomes more meaningful because Oshima forces him to fight all the way to the final bell.

The manga is basically saying that winning and breaking your opponent are not the same thing.

That’s a much more interesting direction for Subaru’s character.

The final pages of Subaru the Invincible Chapter 22 completely changed how I view the fight.

The triple kick is still spectacular, but the real payoff comes afterward.

Oshima gets up.

He keeps fighting.

He loses the decision.

Then he smiles, shakes Subaru’s hand, and walks away with his coach while promising that their dream is still alive.

That’s a much stronger ending than a simple knockout.

Now Chapter 23 has several things to deliver: Subaru’s recovery, the next tournament opponent, the consequences of fighting at his limit, and potentially the beginning of Oshima’s next journey.

And honestly, I’m most curious about that last part.

Oshima may have lost the fight, but after that ending, it would be a mistake to treat him like a defeated character.

His comeback has only started.
