That’s a ridiculous amount of time in anime terms, but I’m increasingly convinced that this particular series benefits from not being rushed.

The first season had a distinctive visual identity, especially during its action scenes and magical combat. Lugh’s fights were rarely about simply throwing the biggest attack available at an enemy. They were about preparation, positioning, deception, and exploiting weaknesses. If Season 2 can preserve that philosophy while expanding the scale of the story, the wait could end up being worthwhile.

For longtime fans, January 2027 now feels less like a vague promise and more like a real finish line.

The New Season Trailer Introduces Epona and Neusch

The new promotional material immediately makes one thing clear: Season 2 is going to expand the cast significantly.

He is the eldest son of the Baron Rhiannon family, but that noble background is almost secondary compared with his real significance. Epona is the Hero chosen to defeat the Demon King, yet the Goddess has warned Lugh that this same Hero will eventually become responsible for destroying the world.

That creates one of the best conflicts in the entire premise.

Imagine being Lugh for a second. Your mission isn’t simply to assassinate a villain. You have been ordered to kill someone who may genuinely become humanity’s greatest savior first. How do you decide when that person has crossed the line? Do you kill Epona before he becomes dangerous, or do you wait for evidence and risk allowing an unstoppable catastrophe to develop?

That moral uncertainty is where I think Season 2 can become much more interesting than a standard academy arc.

Epona is voiced by Sumire Uesaka, and his introduction already suggests that he will be far more important than a typical rival character. His relationship with Lugh should be especially compelling because Lugh can’t simply treat him like another enemy.

Epona doesn’t necessarily need to be evil.

If Lugh discovers that Epona is genuinely kind, heroic, and trustworthy, assassinating him becomes psychologically much harder. On the other hand, Lugh can’t afford to ignore the Goddess’s warning simply because he likes the guy.

That sounds like exactly the kind of dilemma this series should be exploring.

Neusch Gephis

Then we have Neusch Gephis, voiced by Yusuke Tonozaki.

Neusch is the heir to the powerful Duke Gephis family and enters the Royal Knight Academy as an S-class student. He quickly notices that Lugh and Tarte are operating on a completely different level from ordinary students.

His solution? He wants them on his side.

This is where the academy setting gets interesting. Lugh can’t simply disappear into the background. His abilities make him valuable, which means powerful people will naturally start paying attention to him.

And when noble families start competing for talented people, keeping a secret identity becomes considerably harder.

Lugh’s Real Challenge Isn’t the Classroom

The Royal Knight Academy might sound like a familiar anime setting, but I don’t think Season 2 should be viewed as a simple school storyline.

For Lugh, the academy is basically an intelligence operation disguised as student life.

He needs to understand Epona. He needs to determine whether the Hero truly represents an existential threat. At the same time, he has to build relationships, avoid exposing his real abilities, navigate noble politics, and prepare for an assassination that could eventually determine the fate of the entire world.

That is a lot more interesting to me than another tournament arc.

Lugh’s greatest weapon has never been raw magical power. It is his ability to analyze a situation and prepare for it. The academy should give him an environment filled with variables that he can’t completely control, which is exactly what a character like him needs.

The Original Cast Is Returning

One of the safest parts of the announcement is the return of the principal voice cast.

I’m especially happy that the main quartet remains intact. Lugh, Tarte, Dia, and Maha developed a surprisingly effective dynamic during the first season, and replacing any of those voices would have made the long wait feel even stranger.

Their relationships also matter because Lugh’s story isn’t just about becoming the world’s perfect assassin. His connections with other people gradually challenge the cold, professional mentality he carried over from his previous life.

The production side also has some reassuring news. Masafumi Tamura returns as director, while Katsuhiko Takayama is once again responsible for the series composition and scripts. Eri Nagata is also returning for character designs.

The biggest change is that SILVER LINK. is taking the lead on the animation production.

That continuity matters more than people sometimes realize. A long gap between seasons can be frustrating, but I would personally rather wait for a sequel with the same creative identity than get a rushed continuation that loses what made the original work.

The World’s Finest Assassin has always depended on atmosphere as much as spectacle. The quiet planning scenes, Lugh’s internal calculations, the contrast between his childish appearance and adult mindset, and the sudden bursts of violence all need to work together.

If the new season gets that balance right, the five-year wait will be much easier to forgive.

What Season 2 Needs to Get Right

For me, there are a few things that will determine whether Season 2 becomes a genuinely great comeback or simply another decent isekai sequel.

• Keep Lugh intelligent. His appeal disappears if every problem can be solved with an oversized magical attack.
• Make Epona complicated. The Hero should feel like a real person rather than a walking assassination objective.
• Use the academy for political tension. Noble families and alliances should matter just as much as combat.
• Give Tarte, Dia, and Maha meaningful roles. The supporting cast is too important to turn into background characters.
• Let the assassination mystery breathe. The question of whether Lugh should actually kill Epona is the heart of the upcoming story.

If those elements are handled properly, I think Season 2 has a real opportunity to surpass the first season.

Why the Five-Year Wait Might Actually Work

But there is another side to the argument. The first season arrived when isekai was already overflowing with similar concepts, yet The World’s Finest Assassin managed to stand out because it approached its fantasy world through the mindset of someone trained to kill efficiently.

The series was never perfect. Some character and relationship elements were divisive, and the pacing occasionally jumped between ideas faster than I would have liked. Still, the central concept was strong enough to keep fans talking long after the finale.

And now the story is reaching the part that many light novel readers have been waiting to see animated.

The introduction of Epona gives Lugh a target he can’t simply categorize as ‘enemy.’ That alone could push the narrative into much darker territory. If the anime takes the time to explore the psychological consequences of Lugh becoming friends with the person he may eventually have to murder, Season 2 could have considerably more emotional weight than the first.

Crunchyroll Will Bring Season 2 to International Fans

International viewers also have a reason to be excited. Crunchyroll has confirmed streaming rights for Season 2, with the series set to be available across a wide range of international territories, including North and South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and the CIS region.

That means fans won’t have to rely on years-old clips or questionable uploads to follow Lugh’s next mission. Assuming the simulcast schedule goes as expected, international audiences should be able to experience the new episodes alongside the Japanese broadcast.

My Take: This Is One Isekai Sequel I’m Actually Excited For

I’ll be honest: when Season 2 was first announced, I wasn’t sure how excited I would still be after such a long wait. Five years is enough time for an anime to disappear from the conversation completely.

But seeing Epona and the Royal Knight Academy in the new promotional material changed my mind.

The World’s Finest Assassin has one of those premises that becomes more interesting the further you push it. Lugh isn’t trying to become the strongest hero in the room. That’s a much better hook than simply asking who wins the next fight.

January 2027 is still a long way away, but at least now there is something concrete to look forward to. If the new season delivers the tactical battles, darker character development, political maneuvering, and complicated relationship between Lugh and Epona that the premise promises, I suspect a lot of fans will quickly forget just how long they had to wait.

And personally? I’m ready to see whether the world’s finest assassin can actually bring himself to pull the trigger.
