There are plenty of romance anime that are easy to watch, enjoy, and forget a few weeks later. The Ramparts of Ice, or Koori no Jouheki, never felt like one of those shows to me.

What made the first season work was not some huge romantic gimmick or endless collection of exaggerated misunderstandings. It was the uncomfortable stuff: awkward conversations, unread messages, hesitation, insecurity, and the strange way teenagers can desperately want to connect with someone while simultaneously doing everything possible to protect themselves.

That is why I’m genuinely interested in seeing where The Ramparts of Ice Season 2 goes.

The second season has been scheduled for October 1, 2026, continuing the story of Koyuki Hikawa, Minato Minami, and the rest of the group. If the production and scheduling information holds, we are looking at another weekly run throughout the Fall 2026 anime season.

And honestly, after the emotional groundwork established in Season 1, this feels like exactly the right time for the story to become more personal.

The Japanese broadcast is scheduled for Thursdays at 23:56 JST, with the series airing through TBS and its affiliated network structure. For fans, that means there shouldn’t be a long wait between Japanese television broadcasts and the international streaming release.

As always with a weekly anime broadcast, schedules can theoretically change because of television programming adjustments or holiday interruptions. But based on the current timetable, October through Christmas should give fans a pretty consistent weekly dose of the series.

How Many Episodes Will Season 2 Have?

This is one of the areas where I would be a little careful about treating every number floating around online as completely final.

The currently outlined structure points toward 13 episodes for the second season, bringing the overall episode count to 27 if the first season’s 14 episodes and this planned second block are counted together.

That also makes sense from a pacing perspective.

The source material contains a substantial amount of story, and one of the biggest strengths of The Ramparts of Ice is that it doesn’t feel like it is constantly racing toward the next romantic milestone. Characters need time to process things. Sometimes a tiny conversation can be more important than a dramatic confession.

Personally, I’d rather see the adaptation take its time than squeeze everything into a shorter season simply to reach the ending faster.

Koyuki and Minato Still Have a Lot to Work Through

At the heart of the series are Koyuki Hikawa and Minato Minami, and their relationship is one of the reasons I think Season 2 has so much potential.

Koyuki isn’t simply the stereotypical cold romantic lead. Her defensive personality feels connected to her experiences and the way she interprets other people’s reactions. She wants connection, but she also has reasons to be afraid of it.

Minato is interesting for a completely different reason.

On the surface, he appears friendly, approachable, and almost effortlessly comfortable around other people. But the more we learn about him, the clearer it becomes that this behavior isn’t necessarily the complete picture.

That contrast gives their relationship a lot more depth than a basic “opposites attract” setup.

Season 2 should have an opportunity to move beyond the initial awkwardness and explore what these characters actually want from one another.

And that’s the part I’m most excited about.

What I Expect From The New Season

The first season spent a lot of time establishing the emotional walls surrounding the main characters. Season 2 should be where those walls start becoming genuinely difficult to maintain.

The story is expected to explore:

• Minato’s emotional background and why he tends to accommodate other people.
• Koyuki becoming more comfortable with vulnerability instead of automatically retreating behind her defenses.
• The changing relationships between the wider friend group.
• More direct exploration of feelings that were previously left unsaid.
• The consequences of characters finally becoming more honest with each other.

The presence of Miki Azumi and Yota Shindo is also important here. Their relationships with Koyuki and Minato help prevent the story from becoming nothing more than a two-person romance.

That broader social circle is what makes the series feel grounded.

Why The Romance Works Better Than I Expected

What I appreciate most about The Ramparts of Ice is how recognizable its communication problems can feel.

Modern teenage relationships don’t happen entirely through face-to-face conversations anymore. Messages, notifications, social media, reaction times, typing indicators and even the way someone uses punctuation can become part of how people interpret each other.

That sounds incredibly mundane until you’ve watched a character stare at a message for five minutes trying to figure out what the other person actually meant.

The series understands that communication can be emotionally exhausting, especially when someone already struggles with confidence or fears rejection.

Instead of using every misunderstanding as a cheap excuse to stretch the romance, the story often treats these moments as symptoms of deeper insecurities.

That is a major reason the anime connected with me.

The Animation and Creative Team Are Returning

Another reassuring aspect of Season 2 is the continuity behind the production.

Studio KAI remains involved, with Mankyu returning as director. Yasuhiro Nakanishi is again handling series composition, while Miki Ogino continues with character design.

The returning creative staff matters because the visual language of this anime is closely connected to its storytelling.

There are plenty of scenes where a character’s expression says more than their dialogue. A small change in posture, an awkward glance, or a character suddenly avoiding eye contact can carry an entire emotional exchange.

For that reason, maintaining the same creative identity should help Season 2 feel like a continuation rather than a completely different adaptation.

What I’m Hoping Season 2 Doesn’t Do

As a fan, I have one major request: don’t rush the romance simply because the audience wants a payoff.

Yes, I want to see Koyuki and Minato make progress. Obviously.

But the slow-burn approach is part of what makes this story work. If every emotional problem suddenly disappears because the characters confess their feelings, it would undermine the journey that got them there.

I’d much rather have a few genuinely meaningful conversations than a string of artificial romantic twists designed purely to create drama.

The best version of Season 2, in my opinion, is one that allows the characters to make mistakes, communicate badly, recover, and gradually become more honest.

With The Ramparts of Ice Season 2 arriving on October 1, 2026, this is one of those Fall anime releases I’m particularly curious to follow week by week.

The first season established the emotional foundations. Now the interesting part begins: watching these characters decide whether they are actually ready to lower the walls they’ve spent so much time building.

The planned 13-episode schedule, combined with the returning production team and continued Netflix distribution, gives the second season a strong foundation. More importantly, the story has plenty of emotional material left to explore.

For me, the appeal isn’t simply finding out whether Koyuki and Minato become a couple.

It’s seeing how they become people who are capable of having a healthier relationship in the first place.

And if Season 2 can preserve that emotional honesty while giving the characters meaningful development, I’ll happily be there every Thursday.
