If there is one character in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime who becomes more interesting the more you learn about him, it has to be Leon Cromwell.
At first glance, Leon looks like the kind of Demon Lord you are supposed to hate. He is cold, arrogant, incredibly powerful, and seemingly responsible for some of the darkest events connected to the series’ Otherworlders. He is also the ruler of El Dorado, the legendary Golden Land, and has spent an absurd amount of time pursuing mysterious experiments that most people would consider completely unforgivable.
But this is where Tensura gets interesting.
Leon is not really chasing world domination. He is not trying to conquer every nation or destroy Rimuru Tempest. His actions make much more sense once you understand the person he has been searching for all this time: Chloe Aubert.
And honestly, this is one of those Tensura character revelations that completely changes how you look at Leon.
Who Is Leon Cromwell Really?
Leon Cromwell is one of the most dangerous Demon Lords in the world, but his history goes far beyond his current position in the Octagram.
Before becoming the infamous Platinum Devil, Leon was a human who arrived in the world of Tensura. He was connected to Chloe Aubert, someone incredibly important to him. Their relationship is the emotional foundation behind almost everything Leon does later.
Then Chloe disappeared.
That single event effectively changed Leon’s entire life.
Instead of accepting that she was gone, Leon became obsessed with finding her. Years turned into decades, and decades eventually became centuries. His search became so important that ordinary morality, political consequences, and even his reputation became secondary concerns.
This is why I think Leon works so well as a character. He is not evil simply because the story needs another villain. He is a man who allowed one goal to consume his entire existence.
And that makes his decisions much harder to judge in simple terms.
El Dorado Was Built for More Than Power
El Dorado is probably one of the biggest clues to Leon’s real personality.
On the surface, it is a massive and incredibly wealthy kingdom ruled by one of the world’s most powerful Demon Lords. But the Golden Land is much more than a symbol of Leon’s authority.
It functions as a combination of:
- A fortified nation
- A research center
- A source of enormous magical resources
- A sanctuary protected from outside interference
- A base for Leon’s long-term plans
Leon did not build El Dorado simply because he wanted to sit on a golden throne.
He needed resources.
He needed information.
Most importantly, he needed a place where he could continue searching for Chloe without constantly being interrupted by other powers.
That makes the name “El Dorado” feel particularly appropriate. The kingdom represents wealth and power, but behind all that luxury is a much more personal purpose.
Leon essentially turned an entire country into a tool for his search.
The Real Reason Behind Leon’s Summoning Experiments
This is where Leon’s reputation becomes especially complicated.
The Otherworlder summoning rituals associated with Leon have caused enormous suffering. Humans were dragged into the Tensura world, often without understanding what was happening to them. From an outside perspective, it is incredibly easy to look at Leon and say, “This guy is a monster.”
But there was another reason behind those experiments.
Leon was searching for Chloe.
The problem was that bringing one specific person across dimensions was extraordinarily difficult. Leon could not simply open a portal, call Chloe’s name, and expect her to appear.
Instead, his attempts repeatedly produced otherworlders.
Among them was Shizue Izawa, the woman who would later become such an important figure in Rimuru’s story.
This creates one of the most uncomfortable aspects of Leon’s character. His intentions may not have been purely malicious, but innocent people still suffered because of his obsession.
And that distinction matters.
Leon did not necessarily intend to hurt these people. But that does not erase the consequences of what he did.
Why Did Leon Bind Ifrit to Shizue?
Shizue’s history is one of the clearest examples of how Leon’s actions can be misunderstood.
When Shizue was summoned, her body could not properly withstand the massive concentration of magicules in the new world. Leon needed a way to stabilize her.
The solution was Ifrit.
Leon bound the Flame Spirit to Shizue in an attempt to keep her alive.
From Shizue’s perspective, however, the experience was horrifying. She lost control of her own body and was forced to coexist with a powerful spirit. It is completely understandable why Leon became associated with cruelty in her eyes and in the eyes of everyone who eventually learned her story.
Yet the motivation behind the decision was different from simple torture.
Leon was attempting a solution to a problem created by his own summoning experiments.
That does not make the situation morally clean. In fact, it makes it more tragic.
Leon caused the problem, then tried to solve it with another dangerous experiment.
That is Leon Cromwell in a nutshell.
Leon’s Morality Is What Makes Him Fascinating
I would not call Leon a traditional hero.
At the same time, calling him a straightforward villain misses the point.
His morality is almost entirely centered around Chloe. If something helps him get closer to finding or protecting her, Leon is prepared to go further than most characters would dare.
His mindset can basically be summarized like this:
- Find Chloe.
- Protect Chloe.
- Remove anything that threatens that objective.
- Deal with the consequences later.
That is an incredibly dangerous philosophy.
It also explains why Leon can appear heartless even when his motivations are deeply emotional.
He rarely expresses his feelings openly. Instead, he hides them behind arrogance, calculation, and an almost frightening level of self-control.
Personally, I think that contrast is what makes him one of the more underrated characters in Tensura.
Leon and Elmesia: A Very Important Alliance
Leon does not operate completely alone.
His relationship with Empress Elmesia El-Nru Sarion becomes increasingly important as the larger political conflict begins to take shape.
Elmesia understands the political situation surrounding Leon far better than most outsiders. She also understands that his movements could potentially create a massive confrontation between several of the world’s strongest factions.
And yet Leon remains focused.
His interest in the events surrounding Lubelius is not simply political. The appearance of powerful individuals connected to Chloe, the Hero, and the larger schemes surrounding the awakening of ancient powers brings him closer to the answers he has spent centuries seeking.
This is where Tensura Season 4 can potentially make Leon’s story much more compelling.
The question is no longer simply whether Leon is dangerous.
The real question is how far he is willing to go for Chloe.
Leon Cromwell vs. The World’s Power Structure
Leon is also fascinating because he exists within a world already dominated by terrifyingly powerful figures.
Guy Crimson has his own vision of maintaining the world’s balance. Rimuru is rapidly becoming a major political and military force. Luminous controls Lubelius and its religious sphere, while other Demon Lords and ancient beings have their own agendas.
Leon does not fit comfortably into any of these systems.
He is loyal to his own objective.
That makes him unpredictable.

When I look at El Dorado, I don’t see it simply as Leon’s kingdom.
I see it as the physical manifestation of his obsession.
Every fortress, every resource, every political connection and every experiment ultimately points back toward the same question:
Where is Chloe?
Leon has spent centuries accumulating power because he believes power is the only way to overcome the impossible.
And that is both his greatest strength and his biggest weakness.
He has become so powerful that very few people can stop him. But the stronger he becomes, the more dangerous the consequences become when his personal goals collide with everyone else’s.
Why Leon’s Story Matters in Tensura Season 4
The best thing about Leon’s storyline is that it challenges the easy idea of good guys and bad guys.
Rimuru himself has already shown that monsters do not automatically equal villains. Tensura constantly plays with that concept, and Leon is another extreme example.
Leon has done terrible things.
He has also made sacrifices for reasons that were deeply personal rather than selfish.
Both things can be true at the same time.
That is why I would hesitate to describe Leon as either a hero or a villain.
He is a man who became a Demon Lord because he refused to give up on one person.
His search for Chloe transformed his identity, shaped El Dorado, influenced the Otherworlder system, and eventually pulled him into conflicts involving some of the strongest beings in the world.
And if Season 4 continues to explore these connections, Leon could become far more important than his reputation as the “Platinum Devil” suggests.

Final Thoughts: The Platinum Devil Has a Human Heart
Leon Cromwell may look like an emotionless Demon Lord, but beneath that intimidating exterior is a character driven by something surprisingly human.
He lost someone important.
He refused to accept that loss.
Then he spent centuries building an empire, gathering resources, conducting dangerous experiments, and confronting powerful enemies because he believed there was still a chance to bring Chloe back.
That does not excuse everything Leon has done.
But it explains it.
And for me, that is what makes his story so much more interesting than a simple villain narrative.
Leon isn’t chasing a throne. He’s chasing a promise.
El Dorado is the kingdom he built around that promise. His experiments are part of that search. His alliance with Elmesia is another piece of the puzzle. And his involvement in the Lubelius conflict could finally bring him face-to-face with the mysteries surrounding Chloe.
The terrifying part is not that Leon wants to rule the world.
It is that he may be willing to challenge the entire world if that is what it takes to save the one person he has never stopped searching for.
