That simultaneous release is particularly nice for a chapter like this. Nobody has to wait days to see whether that final brawler scene actually goes somewhere.

And after that cliffhanger, I’m definitely not waiting patiently.

What Really Happened at the End of Twilight Blade Chapter 13?

Chapter 13, titled “Mantis and Underdog,” essentially splits the action between two dangerous situations.

The first takes place in the forest, where the exorcists are dealing with one of the Karikura emissaries. The second unfolds in the shopping district, where Hikari and his companions suddenly find themselves being hunted.

Both sequences are important, but the shopping street confrontation is where the chapter completely changes the rules.

The Forest Battle Gets Ugly

The female Karikura emissary immediately demonstrates how little respect she has for the exorcists.

She reveals that the Karikura understand something crucial about Hikari: he cannot properly perceive malevolent spirits in their true forms. That’s why the emissaries have apparently prepared more human-looking vessels.

It’s a small line of dialogue, but it says a lot about the Karikura.

They’re not simply attacking randomly. They understand their target, they understand his weaknesses, and they’ve prepared around them.

Things get even more chaotic when Yatsuha, already badly injured, loses control after Yamato attempts to stop her from throwing her life away. She attacks her own ally, forcing Yojin to intervene.

Yojin’s response is brutal.

He physically restrains Yatsuha and reminds her that if she genuinely wants to protect Hikari, she needs to survive long enough to do it. Yatsuha eventually stands her ground and makes her intentions clear: she doesn’t plan on dying here.

She wants the Karikura emissary alive.

More importantly, she wants answers.

That part of the chapter gives the impression that the conflict between the exorcists and Karikura is becoming much more personal than a simple monster hunt.

The Shopping Street Ambush

Meanwhile, the situation around Hikari becomes significantly worse.

The male Karikura emissary realizes that shouting Hikari’s name in a crowded street is enough to expose him. Hikari instinctively turns around when he hears his name, immediately realizing the trap.

Miss Yukina reacts first.

She uses her Four-Fold Fetter technique to restrain the Karikura emissary and tells Hikari and the messy-haired boy to get away.

For a moment, it actually looks like the exorcist has bought them enough time.

Then the demon gets annoyed.

And that’s where everything falls apart.

Ignoring orders from Akitsu, the Karikura fighter unleashes a wide circular attack that tears through Yukina’s defense. She had already been injured, and her decision to place herself between the demon and another human makes the consequences even more severe.

The demon later claims that he “cut her up real nice.”

It’s one of those lines that makes Twilight Blade feel particularly nasty. The series doesn’t treat its exorcists like untouchable heroes. People get hurt here.

The Messy-Haired Boy Finally Fights Back

This is easily my favorite part of the chapter.

The unnamed boy has spent much of the sequence looking completely out of his depth. He’s frightened, confused, and desperately trying to contact his Master.

Then he sees the Karikura demon approaching.

Instead of running, he asks what happened to Yukina.

The demon threatens him and basically gives him one final opportunity to reveal Hikari’s location.

The boy refuses.

Then he raises his fists.

That’s it.

No sword.

No complicated exorcism technique.

Just fists.

The Karikura demon seems genuinely entertained by this. He charges and lands a vicious punch directly against the boy’s face. Blood flies, and the impact sends him backward.

But he doesn’t stay down.

That moment matters because the demon immediately notices something unusual.

The boy isn’t an exorcist.

He has spiritual power, but it isn’t refined in the same way as Yukina’s. The demon describes her energy as having a sharper quality, while the boy’s power is much rougher.

And yet, he’s still standing.

That gives us the first real indication that Twilight Blade may have a much broader power system than we’ve been shown so far.

“Master’s Punches Hit Way Harder”

Then comes the chapter’s best panel.

The demon decides that the boy isn’t worth killing.

Bad decision.

The boy suddenly launches himself over the demon, wraps his legs around his neck, grabs his silver hair, and uses his entire body to drag the demon backward.

The Karikura fighter is completely caught off guard.

The boy is bleeding from the mouth, barely holding himself together, and still smiling.

Then he delivers the final line:

“You’re not going anywhere. Master’s punches… hit way harder’n yours.”

And that’s where Chapter 13 ends.

Come on.

That is exactly the kind of cliffhanger that makes a weekly manga impossible to put down.

Who Is the Boy’s Master?

The biggest mystery heading into Chapter 14 is obviously the identity of this mysterious Master.

The chapter doesn’t give us enough information to confirm anything yet, but there are several possibilities.

The Yojin Theory

One popular theory connects the Master to Yojin.

It would make sense on a few levels. Yojin clearly possesses enormous physical strength and spiritual authority, and he has already demonstrated that he isn’t afraid of getting directly involved when things become dangerous.

If the boy trained under him, it could explain why a non-exorcist has developed such powerful spiritual energy.

However, there is currently no confirmed evidence that Yojin is the Master.

An Underground Martial Artist

Another possibility is that the Master is a completely new character.

This would actually fit the chapter’s biggest reveal rather well.

The story may be establishing two different approaches to spiritual combat:

• Exorcists: refined spiritual techniques, weapons, seals and specialized abilities.
• Non-exorcist fighters: raw spiritual energy combined with physical strength and martial arts.

If that’s the direction Maruume is taking the series, the Master could represent an entirely separate school of combat.

And personally, I’d love that.

It would give Twilight Blade another layer beyond the usual sword-versus-monster formula.

What Could Happen in Chapter 14?

There are several obvious threads for the next chapter to pick up.

Yamato’s arrival is probably the most immediate. Earlier events establish that he was moving toward Hikari’s location with his sword drawn. If he reaches the shopping street while the brawler is holding the Karikura down, we could finally see these characters fight together.

Then there’s Yukina’s condition.

The demon’s words make her fate look extremely grim, but Chapter 13 deliberately doesn’t give us a clear confirmation. That leaves room for the next chapter to reveal whether she survived the attack.

And, of course, there’s Hikari.

If he’s still nearby, watching this fight could become a major emotional turning point. The entire reason the Karikura are hunting him is because of his unusual connection to their supernatural world.

Chapter 14 could finally force him to confront that reality directly.

Final Thoughts

Chapter 13 is where Twilight Blade stopped feeling like it was simply setting up its supernatural mystery and started showing us what kind of battle manga it wants to become.

The Karikura are frightening because they’re organized and intelligent. The exorcists aren’t invincible. And now we have a completely different type of fighter who apparently relies on raw spiritual power and physical toughness instead of traditional exorcism techniques.

That’s a really interesting direction.

The unnamed brawler isn’t necessarily stronger than the Karikura demon, either. That’s what makes the cliffhanger work. He’s injured, inexperienced, and clearly terrified. He simply refuses to give the enemy what he wants.

And that final reference to his Master?

That’s the hook I’m most interested in.

If Chapter 14 actually reveals who trained this kid, Twilight Blade could be about to expand its entire power system.

For now, the only thing we know for certain is that Chapter 14 arrives on September 29, 2026.

And after that last punch, I’m absolutely going to be there.
