The body-swap premise also means that the performances of Reirin and Keigetsu have to communicate two completely different personalities inhabiting each other’s bodies.

That takes planning.

For that reason, my best estimate is late 2027 or early 2028. A Fall 2027 broadcast would be an optimistic but realistic target if work on the second season begins relatively quickly. Winter 2028 feels safer if the production team wants more breathing room.

I would not expect a Season 2 announcement to automatically mean the anime is coming within a few months. If the series receives the green light, a substantial production period would make much more sense.

Is There Enough Light Novel Material for Season 2?

Absolutely.

In fact, this may be the easiest part of the Season 2 discussion. With 11 light novel volumes available and Season 1 adapting only the early portion of the story, the anime has a comfortable amount of material to work with.

The first season establishes the central relationship between Kou Reirin and Shu Keigetsu, but their story becomes considerably more complicated after the initial body swap. The novelty of waking up in someone else’s body eventually gives way to something much more uncomfortable: both women begin to understand what the other has been living with.

That is what makes the series work for me. It isn’t really about a magical body swap. The body swap is the mechanism that forces these characters to confront lives they previously judged from the outside.

And there is plenty more of that waiting in the novels.

What Could Season 2 Be About?

Season 2 is expected to move further into the Harvest Festival and Ghost Festival arcs, while expanding the political side of the story.

Reirin’s situation remains particularly fascinating. She has already demonstrated that she can survive situations that should completely overwhelm her, turning even physical hardship into another problem she can methodically solve. Her optimism is funny at first, but there is a darker side to it. Reirin is strong because she has learned how to keep moving forward even when circumstances are terrible.

Keigetsu, meanwhile, has to deal with the reality of living in Reirin’s physically fragile body. That experience changes the way she understands both Reirin and the social structure of the court.

The upcoming storylines are expected to push both characters considerably harder.

• Harvest Festival: Court ceremonies become tangled in political sabotage and increasingly dangerous complications.
• Ghost Festival: Supernatural elements and the consequences of the body-swap magic become more important.

One detail I particularly like about these arcs is that the stakes don’t simply become bigger because someone stronger appears. The problems become more complicated. Politics, medicine, social status, and personal relationships all start colliding.

The Second Body Swap Could Change Everything

Without getting into major spoilers, the possibility of another body-swap crisis is one of the most interesting things Season 2 could explore.

The first swap changes Reirin and Keigetsu because neither of them can simply return to their old worldview afterward. A second crisis would carry completely different emotional weight because now they understand exactly what is at stake.

The forbidden magic also becomes increasingly dangerous, and the consequences are no longer something that can be treated as a quirky fantasy complication.

That shift could make Season 2 considerably darker than the first season while still leaving room for the humor that made the original setup so entertaining.

Why Fans Are Already Asking for More

The reaction to Though I Am an Inept Villainess has been particularly positive because the show manages to avoid turning its central characters into simple archetypes.

Reirin isn’t interesting merely because she is a kind-hearted heroine. Keigetsu isn’t interesting because she starts as an antagonist. Their relationship works because the story gradually reveals why both women became who they are.

That has naturally led to comparisons with other palace-centered anime, particularly The Apothecary Diaries. The two shows aren’t really telling the same story, but they share an appreciation for court politics, intelligent female characters, social hierarchy, and mysteries hidden behind seemingly ordinary events.

For me, the biggest strength of Though I Am an Inept Villainess is the emotional contrast between its leads. One character approaches disaster with almost absurd optimism, while the other has spent much of her life expecting rejection. Put them into each other’s bodies and suddenly those differences become impossible to ignore.

So, when will we actually see Season 2?

There is currently no confirmed release date. Based on the existing source material, the production history of Season 1, and the amount of animation work involved, I think a release sometime between Fall 2027 and Winter 2028 is the most reasonable prediction.

Of course, this could change. Anime schedules are notoriously unpredictable, and an official announcement could arrive earlier or later than expected. But I would rather see Doga Kobo take the time to make another strong season than rush the series back simply because the audience is impatient.

And yes, I’m impatient too.

Though I Am an Inept Villainess has already established a surprisingly strong foundation. The characters have room to grow, the light novels provide plenty of material, and the political storyline is only getting started. If Season 1 was the introduction to the Butterfly-Rat story, Season 2 has the opportunity to show just how far this premise can actually go.

Though I Am an Inept Villainess Season 2 is not officially confirmed yet, there are plenty of reasons to remain optimistic. Eleven light novel volumes provide a healthy source of material, the first season has created strong international interest, and the upcoming arcs offer a natural continuation of Reirin and Keigetsu’s story.

My prediction remains Fall 2027 at the earliest, with Winter 2028 being a more conservative estimate. Until the production committee says otherwise, though, that is just a prediction.

What isn’t a prediction is that this story has more to offer. The body-swap gimmick got people through the door, but it is the characters, court politics, and surprisingly thoughtful exploration of privilege and suffering that made viewers stay.
